The "Judaizers" believed that Christiansstill had to follow all the regulations of the Old Testament. Those regulations included complex dietary restrictions, whichis why St Paul writes of these mistaken Christians that "theirGod is their stomach". The regulations also included circumcision, which is why he writes of them putting "their glory intheir 'shame,'" that is, in the mark of circumcision. St Paul saysthat those who are putting their hope in these external regulations are "enemies of the cross of Christ." We may think thisdoesn't apply to us, since we are no longer tempted to fulfill allthose Old Testament regulations. But it does apply to us. The“Judaizers” liked those external regulations because thoseregulations were under their control. They could use them tomeasure their holiness by their external achievements and appearances. We like to do the same thing, to measure our worthby our achievements and appearances - by things that we cancontrol. But that's not where true holiness comes from. Itcomes from having "our citizenship in heaven." That meansfollowing the law of heaven, which is the law of Christ, the lawof love for God and neighbor, an interior law. To follow Christ,in other words, we must relinquish control. It is no longer ourachievements that matter; it is our trusting obedience to Jesus. The “Judaizers” were making small payments to God here andthere, but they kept the bank account for themselves. But Jesusknows that we can't save ourselves, no matter how hard we try.So, he asks us to trust him completely, to give him a blankcheck. We must ask ourselves, are we trying to get by withsmall payments, or have we given Jesus the blank check heneeds? Are we still trying to save ourselves by ourselves, orhave we put our trust completely in Jesus Christ.Saturday March 126:00pm B’day Int.
