From our roots as a Chicago-based trust bankto our global presence today, these principles have served as the foundation upon which ourcompany was built. Northern Trust values corporate responsibility as an essential element ofour corporate culture and inextricable underpinning of our enduring principles.Our 2018 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Report highlights our actions toward ourstrategic priorities and the signifcant progress within each of these areas:Core Aspects–Focusing on governance, citizenship and operationsWe understand the impact greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have on the global environment.To reduce our carbon footprint, we have developed behavior-change programs to drivedesired outcomes around transport, travel and recycling. As a result, we have reduced ourGHG emissions by 29 percent since 2015 and achieved 100% renewable electricity usage inour Harlow and Bank Street locations in the United Kingdom.Employees–Creating an inclusive work environmentCreating an inclusive work environment for our employees is essential to who we are.In order to gain a deeper understanding of our successes as well as areas forimprovement, we engaged an external consultant to assist us with a refresh of our GlobalDiversity and Inclusion strategy. This process included a review of our systems, practices,policies and culture.Shared Value–Generating economic value in a way that also produces value for societyGiving back to the communities in which we live and work is fundamental to our mission.We take pride in our “Outstanding” rating received under the Community ReinvestmentAct (CRA)- which we have maintained for 24 consecutive years.Sustainable Products and Services–Building market strength through innovationWe align our business strategy with the fundamental principles of sustainability: meeting theneeds of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meettheir own. Ms. Lindseyreports directly to Michael G. O’Grady, theChairman, President and Chief ExecutiveOfcer of Northern Trust Corporation (the“Corporation”). Ms. Lindsey also chairs theExecutive CSR Council, a group of senioremployees that enables the implementationof Northern Trust’s CSR strategy throughthe setting and tracking of goals related tomaterial aspects of our CSR strategy,including sustainability initiatives.All employees are expected to uphold ourcore values, exercise the highest ethicaljudgment and comply with the laws andregulations that govern our business. Weexpect employees to treat all informationappropriately based on its classifcation.Breaches of highly sensitive client or businessinformation may result in disciplinary action.The Corporation’s Board of Directorsprovides general oversight of NorthernTrust’s corporate citizenship and socialresponsibility matters of signifcance to theCorporation and its subsidiaries. The Board’sCorporate Governance Committee facilitatesthis oversight. Oversight of certain fnancialand operational risks associated with climatechange and other environmental risk factorsis also provided by the Board’s BusinessRisk Committee through its oversight ofthe Corporation’s global risk managementframework and risk management policies.All employees are required to take thefollowing fve courses annually: “Anti-MoneyLaundering (AML) & Economic Sanctions,”“Anti-Bribery, Corruption and Fraud,” “GlobalPrivacy and Data Protection,” “InformationSecurity,” and “Standards of Conduct.” Allemployees are also required to certifytheir compliance with the Code of BusinessConduct and Ethics.All certifcations and training courses werecompleted by 100 percent of employeesin 2018. We therefore commit to protectingthe environment and mitigating anynegative environmental impacts from ouroperations. We align our business with thefundamental principle of sustainability—meeting the needs of the present generationwithout compromising the ability of futuregenerations to meet their needs. We do this byintegrating environmental considerations intoour company-wide processes, committing tocontinually improving our business practicesand delivering tangible, positive resultsrelated to the environment.Northern Trust’s Corporate ServicesGroup manages our real estate portfolio,procurement and facilities services withthe objective of reducing the negativeenvironmental impacts of our supply chain.Working closely with our building managers,Northern Trust follows the environmentallyfriendly building strategies and practicesoutlined by the U.S. Green Building Council’sLeadership in Energy and EnvironmentalDesign (LEED) program, which has awardedour ofces in North America and APAC twoLEED platinum certifcations, seven goldcertifcations, one silver certifcation andone general certifcation. In addition, we usereliable and sophisticated tracking programsto monitor and manage our environmentalperformance and calculate our annualcarbon footprint.RESULTS:.GOAL:Reducecarbonemissions by25 percentWe use energy to power our data centers andfacilities, the majority of which are locatedin North America. As a result, the bulk ofour GHG emissions come from our NorthAmerican operations. Since we began trackingour carbon footprint (comprised of the carbondioxide equivalent of all GHGs produced fromour operations) in 2006, we have improvedour data collection processes and calculationmethodologies to align with the GHG Protocol.REDUCEDCARBONEMISSIONS BY29 PERCENTPER FTESINCE 2015Corporate Social Responsibility at Northern Trust10

After completing acomprehensive emissions studyin 2015 that formed our baseline,we set a goal to reduce our totalScope 1, Scope 2 (using themarket-based approach) andScope 3 carbon emissions by 3percent per full-time employee(FTE) by 2020. By the end of2016, we exceeded that goal,reducing our emissions by nearly10 percent and setting a new goalto reduce our emissions by 25percent from the 2015 baseline bythe end of 2020.As of December 31, 2018, we havereduced our carbon emissionsby approximately 29 percentsince 2015 and achieved 100percent renewable electricityusage in our Harlow and BankStreet locations in the UK. Weare currently working with theScience Based Targets Initiativeto develop a framework forthe science-based targets forfnancial institutions and to setour own science-based target. Non-Governmental Organizationsand Advocacy GroupsOverviewCoreAspectsPeople mbershipsCollaborating with non-governmentalorganizations (NGOs) and advocacy groupsallows us to maintain transparency and holdourselves accountable to our environmentalsustainability practices. Northern Trustand our surrounding communities beneftwhen we publicly report our environmentalfootprint—such as our GHG emissions andenergy use and the risks and opportunitiesassociated with climate change—under thesupervision and guidelines of reputablethird-party organizations.By joining communities of investors whohold the health of our planet in high regardalongside the success of their businesses,Northern Trust strives to efect positivechange in corporate social responsibilityto our environment. The NGOs with whichwe collaborate include the U.S. GreenBuilding Council, the Carbon DisclosureProject and the Institutional InvestorsGroup on Climate Change.The Sustainability NetworkThe Sustainability Network is Northern Trust’sglobal employee environmental engagementprogram aimed at increasing awareness ofsustainability issues, promoting best practicesand unifying environmentally focusedbusiness operations.This program enables close collaborationbetween our building managers andemployee volunteer “sustainabilitychampions” in delivering consistentenvironmental messages, gauging employeefeedback and advocating for conservationand the protection of environmentalresources. Through organizing Earth Daycelebrations and environmentally focusedvolunteer opportunities, the SustainabilityNetwork has been a key activator ofbehavioral change in Northern Trust’s culture.#BeRecycled PledgeOn November 15, 2018, America RecyclesDay, the Sustainability Network launchedNorthern Trust’s “Do Small, Think Big”campaign to promote the improvementsthat even small behaviors can have onsustainability in the workplace.As part of the campaign, Northern Trustemployees took the #BeRecycled pledge,committing to reduce and recycle cartons,shampoo bottles, unwanted mail, mobiledevices and single-use plastic such as bags,wraps, bottles and caps. We targetour talent identifcation, talent sourcingmethods and recruiting strategies to specifclocations using a variety of channels includingjob boards, colleges, professional networks,associations and online social networks.We base hiring decisions on a variety offactors, including educational background,diversity, relevant experience, pastaccomplishments, professional licensingand strong evidence of integrity andethical behavior.Talent Management and EducationNorthern Trust’s talent management team hasdeveloped a customized training portfolioof core, manager, sales and client servicingblended learning solutions. In 2018, NorthernTrust employees logged a total of more than455,000 hours of training, an average of morethan 23 hours of training for each employee.Northern Trust provides targeted learningand development opportunities for managersincluding training classes, guidebooks,articles, webinars and suggested webpages organized by leadership level andencompassing a range of topics includingteam development, results delivery,performance management, emotionalintelligence, agility and productivity.Managers also beneft from externaldevelopment programming on variousmanagement and leadership topics. Theseinteractive programs provide peer networkingopportunities and direct access to well-knownexpert facilitators.In addition, Northern Trust ofers aneducational assistance program thatencourages employees to pursue furthereducation.
