If using template plastic,trace patterns onto plastic and cut out templateshapes.Note: All seam allowances are 1 4". Pieces aresewn right sides together. Press seams openunless directed otherwise.CuttingFabrics A through J, cut from each:(8) Template A orange peel shapes, making sureto align the points of the orange peel shape withthe bias grain of the fabric, and the grainline withthe straight grain of the fabric. For directionalprints, rotate the template 90 for (4) shapes, tokeep the print in the correct orientation for thefinal blockFabric K, cut:(13) 3" x WOF; sub-cut(160) 3" squares(9) 21 2" x WOF for bindingFig. 11. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner onthe wrong side of each 3" Fabric K square.Place marked squares right sides togetheron the two corners opposite the points ofan Orange Peel unit, with the lines orientedas shown (Fig. 2). Sew on the line. Trim theexcess corner fabric, leaving a 1 4" seamallowance. Press toward the corner. Repeatto add two triangle corners to all OrangePeel units.Fig. 3Fig. 23. Group the Orange Peel units in sets of (4) ofthe same print fabric, choosing and rotatingunits so that all directional prints are orientedcorrectly. Working with one set at a time,arrange the units in two rows of two unitseach, placing the units as they will appear inthe finished quilt. For construction purposes,we’ll refer to the units as unit 1, 2, 3, and 4,as noted in the (Fig. 3).Copyright 20214. Fold a Fabric L square in half, wrong sidestogether. Aligning raw edges and withright sides together, pin the folded squareto the lower right corner of unit 1 (Fig. 4).The square’s folded edge should be towardthe center of unit 1. Place unit 2 right sidestogether against unit 1, making sure theOrange Peel points align and sandwichingthe folded square in between the two units.Sew the units together along the adjacentedge as shown. Do not press.5. Fold the joined units 1 and 2 wrong sidestogether along the seam, so that the foldedsquare extends out from the units. Aligningraw edges and with right sides together, pinthe unsewn short end of the folded squareto the upper right corner of unit 3 (Fig. 5).The square’s folded edge should be towardthe center of unit 3. Flower Garden Quilt6. Aligning the raw edges, place units 1 2 andunits 3 4 right sides together. Pull the foldedsquare open so that the square’s raw edgesalign with the raw edges of units 1 and 3 and2 and 4. Finger press the seam allowancesin opposite directions so that the seamswill nest together, if desired. Pin, then sewthe paired units together, sandwiching thesquares raw edges between the units (Fig. 6).Fig. 79. Referring to the Quilt Layout diagram onpage 6 for fabric placement, arrange theblocks in (5) rows of (4) blocks each. Sew theblocks in each row together along adjacentedges. Press. Finger press the folded edges of the on-pointsquare, gently rolling the sides of the squaretoward the center, to make a soft curve. Pin,then topstitch along the curved edges tosecure the curves in place. Press. If necessary,trim and square the block to 161 2" square.Make a total of (20) blocks. (Fig. 8)Fig. 810. Sew together the 21 2" x WOF Fabric Kbinding strips end to end using diagonalseams. Press the seams open. Press thebinding strip in half wrong sides together.11. Layer the backing (wrong side up), batting,and quilt top (right side up). Baste the layerstogether and quilt as desired. Trim excessbatting and backing even with the quilt topafter quilting is completed.12. Leaving an 8" tail of binding, sew binding totop of quilt through all layers matching all rawedges. Miter corners. Stop approximately12" from where you started. Lay both looseends of binding flat along quilt edge. Wherethese two loose ends meet, fold them backon themselves and press to form a crease.Using this crease as your stitching line, sewthe two open ends of the binding togetherright sides together. Trim seam to ¼" andpress open. Finish sewing binding to quilt.13.
