About IGNOUIndira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has been established by the Government of Indiaby an Act of Parliament in 1985 (Act No. 50 of 1985) with the objective of enhancing access to qualityhigher education through distance mode. The University has been mandated to: provide access to higher education to all segments of the society; offer high-quality, innovative and need-based programmes at different levels, to all those whorequire them; reach out to the disadvantaged by offering programmes in all parts of the country at affordablecosts.IGNOU started offering academic programmes from 1987 with 4,528 students on its rolls. Some of the facilities available to the learners are: Pre-admission counselling at Regional Centres and Study Centres; Teaching support in the form of face-to-face academic counselling at Study Centres; Conduct of practical sessions under the supervision of experts for programmes having practicalcomponent;1
Conduct of workshops/seminars/extended contact programmes depending on specific courserequirements Continuous evaluation and feedback; Multimedia support in the form of recorded audio/video lectures, teleconference, radio counselling,video-conferencing, etc.; Library facility; Conduct of examination at a nearby study centre; Learning on the move: one can continue one’s studies in an uninterrupted manner in case ofchange of place/location.How to EnrollEnrolling with IGNOU is simple and easy. IGNOU follows the policy of ‘walk-in admission’ which meansthat one can apply for admission round the year. Application forms are available at all Regional Centresand Study Centres. Filled-in application forms can be submitted at the Regional Centre concerned.There are two-cycles of admission: January and July. While most of the programmes are available inboth cycles, some are available in either January or July Cycle. For more details please visit ourwebsite.There are three categories of programmes: Programmes which anyone fulfilling the minimum eligibility criteria can join directly; Programmes with limited seats where admission is on the basis of merit list based on priorqualification and experience; and Programmes where admission is through an entrance test.Majority of the programmes fall in the first two categories. These are offered through the CommonProspectus. For programmes having admission through entrance test, separate Prospectus is available.Given below are answers to some of the anticipated questions in the form of Frequently Askedquestions (FAQs). If you need additional information, please feel free to contact us.Following the FAQs are brief details of academic programmes on offer. We are sure you will findsomething of your interest!Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)Where can I get an application form? Where should I submit my filled-in application form?Application forms are part of the Prospectus which are available at all our Regional Centres and StudyCentres. You can also download the Prospectus from our website: www.ignou.ac.inThe filled-in application form is to be submitted at the Regional Centre concerned.Can I choose my Study Centre, or shall the university allot me the Study Centre?You can choose your Study Centre as per your convenience. However, since all our programmes arenot available at all the Study centres, you should confirm that the Programme you are applying foris available at the Study Centre opted by you. Normally the Centre opted by you shall be allotted toyou. In exceptional cases the University may allot a different Centre due to unavoidable reasons.How should I pay the programme fee?The fee can be paid through a Bank Draft drawn in favour of IGNOU, payable at the city where theRegional Centre is located. You can also pay the programme fee in cash by way of Bank challan atdesignated Banks/Branches. For more details regarding payment through challan, please contact theRegional Centre.2
Can I send my application form by post, or is it required to be submitted in person?You can send your application form by post also. Please retain a photocopy of your application formand the postal receipt carefully.What I am required to do after submission of my application form?Once your application form is processed at the Regional centre and you are found eligible for admission,you will receive a confirmation of your admission along with detailed information about your enrolmentnumber, Study Centre allotted, etc. Subsequently, you will receive an invitation letter from your StudyCentre for attending an Induction Meeting. Your counselling schedule and study material shall beprovided to you during the Induction meeting.If I want to withdraw from the programme after confirmation of my admission, shall I getmy fee refunded?Fee once paid will not be refunded under any circumstances. It is also not adjustable against any otherprogramme of this University. However, in cases where University denies admission, the programmefee will be refunded after deduction of processing fee, if any, through A/c Payee Cheque only.I wish to register for only some courses of the Bachelor degree programme. Can I do so?IGNOU has a scheme of ‘Associate Studentship’ which allows you to register for some courses ofa programme. For details of the scheme please see the Common Prospectus.As a student of IGNOU, shall I get access to library facility?In case you are staying in the city where your Regional Centre is located, you can make use of thelibrary at the Regional Centre. In addition, you can also use the multimedia facility (recorded audio/video lectures, teleconferencing etc.) at the Regional Centre.Your Study Centre is also equipped with library/multimedia facility. You may use the facility during theworking hours of the Study Centre.What is Credit System?The University follows the ‘Credit System’ for all the programmes. Each credit in our system isequivalent to 30 hours of study comprising all learning activities (i.e. reading and comprehending theprint material, listening to audio, watching video, attending counseling sessions, teleconference andwriting assignment responses).Thus, a 4-credit course involves 120 hours of study. This helps thelearner to know the academic effort he/she has to put in, to successfully complete a course. Completionof an academic programme (Degree or Diploma) requires successful completion of the assignments,practicals, projects and the term-end examination of each course in a programme.What is the system of evaluation followed by IGNOU?The system of evaluation in IGNOU is different from that of conventional universities. IGNOU has amulti-tier system of evaluation. Self-assessment exercises within each unit of study. Continuous evaluation mainly through assignments which are tutor-marked, practical assignmentsand seminar/workshops/extended contact programme. Term-end examination. Project workThe evaluation of learners depends upon various instructional activities undertaken by them. A learnerhas to write assignment responses compulsorily before taking term-end examination from time to timeto complete an academic programme. A learners have to submit TMA responses to the Coordinatorof the Study Centre concerned to which s/he is attached.3
Can I join two Programmes of IGNOU at a time?Students who are already enrolled in a programme of one year or longer duration can also simultaneouslyregister themselves for any Certificate programme of 6 months' duration. However, if there is any clashof dates of counselling or examination schedule between the two programmes taken, the Universitywill not be in a position to make adjustments.Simultaneously pursuing two academic Programmes either from the same University, or one from theOpen University (under ODL mode) and the other from Conventional University (regular or face-to facemode) is not permitted, as of now, except add-on courses.Is there any provision for scholarship or reimbursement of fee in IGNOU?Learners of IGNOU belonging to reserved Categories, viz. Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes andPhysically Handicapped are eligible for reimbursement of fee from the respective state governments.Further, scholarship scheme of National Centre for Promotion of Employment of Disabled People(NCPEDP) for Post Graduate level programmes is applicable to the students of this University also. Suchstudents are advised to apply to the awarding authority directly. However, at the time of admission allapplicants are required to pay the full fee.I am a foreign national residing in India. Can I take admission in IGNOU?Foreign nationals residing in India are eligible to seek admission in IGNOU programmes provided theyhave valid student visa for the minimum duration of the programme. So if you have a valid studentvisa for the minimum duration of the programme of your choice, you may apply for admission. Pleasenote that you will be required to pay the fee applicable to foreign students. Details of fee applicableto foreign students are available on our website. Further, admission in programmes having limitednumber of seats is not available to foreign nationals residing in India.If I move to another city after joining a programme, can I continue my studies in the newplace, or do I have come back for completing the course?IGNOU has a national network of Regional Centres and Study Centres. So in case you change yourplace, you can continue your studies uninterrupted from your new place. You only have to request yourRegional Centre to update your new address and change your Regional Centre/Study Centre Code.Are the Degrees/Diplomas/Certificates awarded by IGNOU recognized?IGNOU Degrees/Diplomas/Certificates are recognized by all member universities of the Association ofIndian Universities (AIU) and are at par with Degrees/Diplomas/ Certificates of all Indian Universities/Institutions, as per UGC Circular letter No. F.1-52/2000(CPP-II) dated 5th May, 2004, AIU Circular No.EV/11(449/94/176915-177115 dated January 14, 1994, AICTE Circular No.AICTE/Academic/ MOU-DEC/2005 dated May 13, 2005 and UGC/DEB/2013 dated 14.10.2013.If I join a programme of IGNOU but fail to appear in the examination at the first instance,will my registration be cancelled?Flexibility in pace of learning is one of the important features of IGNOU’s programme delivery. Recognizingthe fact that all our learners may not be able to study at the same pace due to various personalreasons, IGNOU has prescribed a ‘minimum’ and ‘maximum’ duration for each programme. Thus, whileyou can complete your programme in the minimum prescribed period, your registration shall remainvalid for the ‘maximum duration’ of the programme. This helps you pace your studies at your convenience.However, if you are aiming at the University Gold Medal, you must complete it within the minimumprescribed period!We hope you have found the FAQs useful.
