Pembroke PioneerMay 2022Veterans Pension / Aid and AttendanceA Veterans Pension is for Wartime Veterans who have limited or no income, and are overthe age of 65 or if under 65 are totally disabled. This is a low income benefit and is not taxable. The Veteran must have served in wartime ( 90 days of active service – one of which is inwartime). The Veteran may not receive VA compensation and a Veterans pension at the same time. A doctors notewould be required if disabilities were being claimed. If the Veteran is housebound or unable to perform normal activities such as bathing, walking, preparing meals thenthe Veteran can apply for Aid and Attendance which provides more money to help pay the cost for assistance. TheAid and Attendance money is attached to the Veterans pension. Aid and Attendance may be also attached to Veterans who are receiving Service Connected disabilities as long as that the compensable injury is causing the need forAid and Attendance. All assets need to be reported but do not include primary home or car. The government does athree year look back to insure no assets were hidden.Widows Pension / Aid and AttendanceThe Widows Pension like the Veterans Pension is for widows of wartime Veterans who have limited or no income. The widow must have not remarried, has not divorced the Veteran and was married to the Veteran for one year. If theWidow has housebound disabilities then they also can apply for Aid and Attendance so that additional monies can beapplied to the pension.5
