COURSE SELECTION PROCESSStudents must carefully plan their course selections. Students will receive specific instructions and assistancefrom school counselors during the scheduling process. However, it is important that students and parents givecareful consideration to selecting appropriate courses.Below are steps to consider during the course selection process:Review the Course CatalogLook over course descriptions and consider any prerequisites for courses of interestSelect courses related to your future academic and career goalsStudents are required to enroll in the core area courses required for graduation, which include English LanguageArts and Reading, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies.Orientation of CoursesAttend student and parent presentations on course offerings.Review the course selection sheet.Parent/Guardian ApprovalA parent or guardian must sign the bottom of the course selection sheet.Students will return the sheet to their school counselor, once complete.Online Course SelectionDuring a designated class period, students will use an online system to input their course selections, withassistance from the counseling staff.Please note the following: If there is insufficient enrollment for a course, the course may not be offered and one of the alternateslisted on the student’s course selection sheet will be used. Elective courses are scheduled based on teachers and sections available for the current school year. Electives may be replaced with intervention or remedial courses if a student demonstrates a need fortargeted improvement.Information in this catalog is subject to change by action of the Board of Trustees of the Seguin IndependentSchool District, the State Board of Education, and the Texas Education Agency. MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAMMIDDLE SCHOOL PLANSeguin ISD has two comprehensive middle schools: Barnes and Briesemeister Middle Schools that serve studentsin grades 6-8. The middle schools both operate on a seven period day with a flex period for enrichment andintervention. The curriculum and programming is designed to prepare students for post secondary readiness andto exceed the requirements set forth by the Texas Education Agency. Middle School State AssessmentsIn spring 2012, the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR ) replaced the Texas Assessmentof Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). The STAAR program includes annual assessments for the following middle schoolsubjects: 6th grade: Math and Reading 7th grade: Math, Reading and Writing 8th grade: Math, Reading, Science and Social StudiesNOTE: Students who take Algebra I in middle school will be required to take the Algebra I STAAREnd-of-course assessment. Students who wish to accelerate their math instruction to complete Algebra I in Grade8 must enroll in Grade 6 or Grade 7 Math Advanced - Due to the accelerated nature of these courses, studentsmay need to devote additional time outside of the school day for studies and tutorials. Students who wish toaccelerate their math instruction to complete Geometry in Grade 8 must successfully earn a score of 80% on aCredit-by-Exam exams) for Grade 6 Math.For more information on the STAAR state assessment program, visit the Texas Education Agency website ddle School Course RequirementsMiddle school courses offered in Seguin ISD meet and exceed the requirements set forth by the Texas EducationAgency. Below is additional information for specific course requirements as specified in the Texas EducationCode. College and Career Readiness Instruction RequirementIn accordance with the Texas Education Code §28.016, beginning in Grade 6 information will be sharedwith students about college and career readiness, to include the following: high school personalgraduation plans (PGPs), graduation requirements under the Distinguished Level of Achievement,endorsements, college readiness standards, and potential career choices and the education needed toenter those careers. In grade 8, all students are required to engage in college and career readinesslessons and activities which are embedded within the regular middle school program. Fine Arts RequirementChapter 74 of the Texas Education Code requires all middle school students to complete one fine artscourse during grades 6, 7, or 8. Elective course offerings are dependent on staff and facilities availabilityat each middle school campus. Physical Education RequirementIn accordance with the Texas Education Code §28.002(l), all students in Kindergarten-Grade 8 mustparticipate in at least 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous daily physical activity. A student in grade 6, 7,or 8 must complete 2 courses in physical education and/or athletics. Seguin ISD requires all students inGrade 6 to enroll in Physical Education. Health Education Requirement19 Texas Administrative Code (TAC) §74.3(a) strengthened TEKS-based health education as arequirement for students in grades 6-8. School districts must provide health education instruction in themiddle school as a part of a school district’s required curriculum. Health education TEKS are embeddedwithin the Grade 6 Physical Education course in Seguin ISD.8

MIDDLE SCHOOL POSTSECONDARY READINESSAdvanced Level CoursesAdvanced level courses are offered at the middle school level in English language Arts and Reading, Mathematics,Science, and Social Studies in grades 6-8. The purpose of an advanced course is to prepare students for skillsthey will need to engage in the level of work that will be experienced in an Advanced Placement (AP) or DualCredit course. Advanced level courses are aligned to the state standards but are taught at a higher level of rigorand complexity.High School Credit OpportunitiesStudents in middle school are provided with the opportunity to enroll in a variety of course offerings that providefor high school credit. These courses are identified on a student’s transcript and will count toward fulfillinggraduation requirements. High school courses completed at the middle school level are not calculated into astudents GPA and do not count toward rank determination. The courses in Seguin ISD available to middle schoolstudents include: Algebra I, Geometry I, Art I, Robotics I, Spanish I, Spanish I for Native Speakers, Spanish II,Spanish II for Native Speakers.Gifted and Talented ProgramThe primary goal of the Gifted and Talented Program is to develop self-directed learners who are challenged intheir area of giftedness. Seguin ISD provides services to gifted students who demonstrate need for differentiationin the areas of intellectual ability, academic areas, leadership, and creativity. The Gifted and Talented programmingoffered at the middle school level includes advanced interdisciplinary G/T Science courses, advanced corecourses, and accelerated courses in mathematics, LOTE, Art, and CTE. Students also have opportunities toaccelerate instruction through Credit by Exam. Opportunities outside of the school day include Saturdayexperiences, Science/History Fair, Designation Imagination, A Academics/UIL, and other clubs/activities.Career and Technical Education ProgramThe primary goal of the Seguin ISD Career and Technical Education (CTE) Program is to build a stronger set ofskills for each student in preparing them for postsecondary success. Outcomes of the program includeprofessional postsecondary degrees, applied and associate degrees, professional certification programs,industry-level certifications, and career-focused workforce training. The Seguin ISD CTE Program offers a varietyof programs and course sequences that provide students coherent and rigorous content leading to a graduationendorsement.Multilingual ProgramThe primary goal of the Multilingual Program is to enable students to become competent in literacy and academicskills in English and/or another language. An English as a Second Language (ESL) course provides students withinstruction in the English language and cultivates bilingualism and biculturalism. Core and ESL teachers designinstruction based on the student’s learning experiences and integrate the English Language Proficiency Standards(ELPS). Languages Other than English (LOTE) provide opportunities for students to learn the foundationsnecessary to pursue bilingualism/biculturalism performance acknowledgements.9

Special ServicesSeguin ISD provides a continuum of alternative placements and services for students with disabilities. The districtprovides services with special education personnel on an itinerant, case manager support, resource setting,partially self-contained, and self-contained basis to students with disabilities in order to meet a student's specialneeds. Students with disabilities have available to them the variety of educational programs and services availableto students without disabilities.National Junior Honor SocietyNational Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is the nation’s premier honor recognition program for middle schoolstudents. The pillars of NJHS include leadership, scholarship, character, citizenship, and service. Inductionopportunities are available to 7th or 8th grade students who meet the charter requirements (specific to eachcampus).A Academics/UIL and Co/Extracurricular OpportunitiesMiddle School students have opportunities to become involved in a variety of co/extracurricular activities in theareas of dictionary, spelling, listening, mathematics, number sense, calcular, science, social studies,maps/graphs/charts, speech/theatre, band, choice, mariachi, art, writing, yearbook, one act play, science fair,national history day, robotics, STEM, and Destination Imagination.Middle School Promotion Policy [EIE (LOCAL)]In grades 6–8, promotion to the next grade level shall be based on an overall average of 70 on a scale of 100based on course-level, grade-level standards (essential knowledge and skills) for all subject areas and a grade of70 or above in language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Except when a student will be assessed inreading or mathematics above his or her enrolled grade level, students in grade 8 must meet the passing standardon the applicable state-mandated assessments in reading and mathematics to be promoted to the next gradelevel.Middle School Schedule ChangesShould a schedule change become necessary, a student must submit a request in writing, including the reasonsfor needing the change and a parent’s signature. Each request will be reviewed by the counselor and may requireapproval by campus administration. Please note that not all schedule changes may be granted,depending on course offerings, teacher availability, and prerequisites, among other considerations.10

Endorsementsconsist of a related series of courses that are grouped together by interest or skill set. They provide students within-depth knowledge of a subject area. High School State Assessments and Postsecondary Readiness TestsState Assessments: In spring 2012, the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR ) replacedthe Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). For more information on the STAAR state assessment program, visit the Texas Education Agencywebsite at Any student who completes Algebra I, Biology, or English I course in middle school and passes the State of TexasAssessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR ) end-of-course (EOC) assessment for that course must take theSAT or ACT assessment for that content area when they are in high school. For example, if a student takesAlgebra I in middle school and passes the state assessment for the course, then the student must take the mathportion of the SAT or ACT when they are in high school.Post-Secondary Readiness Tests: Students may take the following additional post-secondary readiness tests.(Test names are hyper-linked to each testing agency’s website for more information).Advanced Placement (AP) Exams College Board AP Exams are given once in May for specific AP courses and students register in their APclasses.Texas Success Initiative Assessment (TSI) This assessment is required for some dual credit courses. There is no charge to students, all costs incurred by Seguin ISD Students should sign up with their counselors in NovemberAmerican College Test (ACT) The ACT is typically taken by Juniors and Seniors. Registration is required about four weeks in advance of each test date; register by mail or on-line Information is available in the counseling office.Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) The SAT is typically taken by Juniors and Seniors. Registration is required about four weeks in advance of each test date; register by mail or on-line Information is available in the counseling office.PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors are eligible to take this test, which is offered in October. Students should sign up with their counselors in September.Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) This assessment is given in grades 10-12. All students are eligible to take this test, which is usually offeredduring the fall semester. This exam is offered free of charge, each semester. Students should sign up with their counselors.13
