Department of Environmental ConservationGOVERNOR’SMESSAGEAs a Western New York native who grew upalong Lake Erie, I know frsthand the valueof fsheries like our prized Lake Erie walleyeor Lake Ontario Chinook salmon, as well asthe proud traditions of sportsmanship andstewardship in New York State. Whetherit is through fshing license sales and themore than 2 billion in overall economicactivity generated by fshing each year,or the volunteer eforts to protect andgrow healthy fsheries across the state, our anglers are a key part of conservationeforts to sustain the quality of our aquaticresources now and in the future.I have been fortunate to travel andexperience the beauty of just aboutevery corner of the Empire State. WhileI haven’t dropped a line in every lake, river, or stream—at least not yet—I havebeen fortunate to try my luck at a varietyof fsheries along the way and it is alwaysworth the time spent on the water. NewYork has incredible fsh and wildliferesources that ofer recreational enjoyment, provide food for our families, contributeto our rich biodiversity, and boost localeconomies. For these and many other reasons, I hopethe 850,000 freshwater anglers we expectto visit New York’s waters this year enjoythe variety of great fshing seasons aheadin 2022, and that each one fnds their ownreasons for why New York State continuesto receive national acclaim for being one ofthe best places to fsh in the nation and theworld.Kathy Hochul, GovernorCOMMISSIONER’SMESSAGEWhether you like fshing a headwaterbrook trout stream or one of the FingerLakes, New York is home to a wide arrayof opportunities to drop a line. Managingthese resources responsibly requiressustaining the State’s fsheries in a mannerthat balances the desires of an anglingpublic as diverse as the resource. To this end, DEC recently reexaminedmany of our fshing regulations to simplifyand clarify special regulations, whilestill providing the protections neededto sustain our fsheries and help anglerssucceed. This multi-year efort signifcantlystreamlined regulations by removing morethan 200 special regulations. In addition,we continue to improve the fshing guideso that it’s easier to use for all anglers. In addition to these changes, DEC adjustedstatewide sunfsh and crappie regulationsto improve these fsheries and ensure theyare sustainable into the future. Sciencecontinues to drive our decision-making,and DEC is embarking on a fve-yearstudy of a few select waters to determineif our efective management produceslarger sunfsh and more unique fshingopportunities.DEC strives to keep this leisurely pastimeas enjoyable and welcoming as possiblefor both old hands and newcomers. Wehope that anglers in 2022 enjoy theseregulatory changes and look forward topartnering with the New York anglingcommunity to continue to improve ourfsheries and the fshing experience.Basil Seggos, CommissionerNYS Department of EnvironmentalConservation6 New York State Freshwater Fishing Regulations Guide 2022
