Commission on Dialogue and Unity AccompanyingRamadan Cardinal Michael FitzgeraldRamadan, the ninth month of the year according to the lunar calendarfollowed by Muslims, started on 2 April. It is a holy month, markedespecially by a fast each day during the hours of light. This way offasting sets Muslims apart from others. In the southern Philippines,on the island of Mindano which has a large Muslim population, theChristians devised a programme which they called Duyog Ramadan,“Accompanying Ramadan”. The idea was taken from music. Whenpeople sing, they are often accompanied by someone playing theguitar. The guitarist doesn’t necessarily sing, but he or she backs upthe singers by strumming. In a similar way Christians, who are notobserving Ramadan, can accompany the Muslims who are doing so.In 2020, the priests and people of St Vincent de Paul parish, inLiverpool 1, decided to do just this. They wished to accompany theirMuslim brothers and sisters, especially by their prayers. In order tosustain this effort some information about Ramadan, or about Islamin general, was provided every day on the parish Facebook account. It is these daily posts that have been collected in the booklet whichcan be found at: PASCHAL CANDLE 2022This year’s Paschal Candle is called ‘Luke 24’. Wecelebrate - “Why do you search for the living oneamong the dead? He is not here, he has risen”.Our Saviour Jesus Christ, on this morning wecelebrate. One of the most resonating scripture reading of our faith emblazonedas the theme of this paschal candle. The burial shroud symbolicallydraped on his cross, his Chi Roe monogram triumphantly crownsthe design ensemble. All rendered in wax with highlights of copperleaf and burnished with bronze wash.Fr Mark blessed the Paschal Candle on Easter Night and it will shinebrightly everyday for the next 50 days and at every Baptism &Funeral.

SUNDAY THOUGHTSEven the greatest human mind can’t grasp the resurrection, forit defies understanding. Christians know when where and whyit happened but they don’t know how. They simply know that itdid. It’s the central tenet of Christian faith and the mostimportant event in world history. But for a world that relies onDNA, on witnesses, CCTV and physical evidence the resurrection doesn’t add up.After all, dead bodies don’t just get up and walk away.Easter Sunday is God’s day of cosmic laughter. The power of evil could not containChrist. Death had no hold over him. All that afflicts humanity, all that makes ourdays heavy was swept away as the stone was rolled from the tomb. God laughedin the face of the puny attempts to reduce the dignity of human existence. Theforces of darkness were dispersed by the glorious brilliance of resurrection light.Resurrection is about the grandeur of God, about a new dawn scattering all thatseeks to drag us down. It's a jubilant reminder that God rules over creation and iscapable of turning our ideas about reality on their heads. For microscopes cannotmanage mystery and physics flounders in the face of faith. When Jesus rose fromthe dead he proved that there is more to life than meets the eye. And only eyes offaith can enjoy the vision that is resurrection. The events of Easter Sunday reveal that we are designed and destined for morethan physical existence. Out of despair comes hope; from weakness arisesstrength; pain becomes peace and sorrow changes to joy. From death theresprings new life, a risen life promising that nothing can possibly keep us from thatdeep quality, that eternal life which Jesus offers us by shattering the doors of thetomb.Today we join in God’s laughter. We laugh with the Father who tames our darkestfears, reconciles us and lets his glory been seen. We laugh with the Son who byrising from the dead takes on our weakness and turns it into strength. We laughwith the Spirit who goes before us as our hope and inspiration. And ‘Alleluia’ is oursong!REQUESTFr Mark respectfully asks that people check that lights are switchedoff in the church, porch or sacristy area as often they can be left on formany hours or overnight.
