Speakers discussed a wide range of progressive issues, including poverty, systemic racism and the environment.President Biden delivered pre-recorded remarks to the rally’sattendees, expressing his support for the organization and theiragenda.“I don’t think we’ve ever been together at a time of such opportunity to deliver dignity for our nation’s poor and low-wageworkers to make ending poverty not just an aspiration but atheory of change,” Biden said. The Raleigh event was the beginning of what the group sayswill be 365 days of action, ending on June 18, 2022, with a massive “Moral March” on Washington, D.C. Board of Education school desegregationdecision in 1954, Blackteachers and principalsprovided their studentswith tools and a frameworkto navigate a society thatwas anti-Black.And renowned educationresearcher Gloria LadsonBillings explains Blackteachers’ capacity to drawon their own experiencesas Black people in the U.S.and incorporate their Blackstudents’ cultural experiences into the classroom.Given the added value ofteachers of color, a pressing problem remains:There is a considerable demographic mismatch betweenteachersandstudents of color in the U.S.While teachers of color represent 21% of public schooleducators, students ofcolor account for morethan 52% of students. Here are four ways to getmore teachers from ethnically and racially diversebackgrounds in K-12 classrooms:1. Focus on retention:Policymakers, school prin-cipals and philanthropieshave spent a great deal ofresources on recruitingteachers of color. And those efforts havepaid off. More Black andLatino teachers are entering the teacher workforce. The story now is one of retention.Teachers of color leavethe profession and move toother schools at a higherrate than their white peers. An analysis of nine schooldistricts found that Blackteachers in particular havehigher turnover rates thantheir white and Latinopeers. For example, the numberof Black teachers in Chicago Public Schools decreased by 39% between2002 and 2011, comparedto a 3% decrease in whiteteachers and a 6% increasein Latino teachers duringthe same period.2. Improve leadership, work conditions: Historically, researchers believedthat teachers in urbanschools that predominantly serve children ofcolor left their schools because they did not want towork with those students. But teachers don’t leavetheir students; teachersleave their principals.Principals create theworking conditions thatlead to turnover by notsupporting teachers or providing the resources theyneed to work with their students. To ensure that principalsinstead create conditionsthat help teachers of colorthrive, they need highquality preparation. This preparation shouldinclude a focus on how tosupport new teachers aswell as work collegiallywith students, caregiversand teachers.3. Fund schools equi-tably: To retain teachers ofcolor, districts have to improve the working conditions in their schools. One way to do this is tofund schools more equitably. Some states, like California, have a more progressive, equitable fundingformula.Thatmeansschools that have a significant number of studentswhoareunhoused, adopted, qualify for free orreduced lunch, or speakEnglish as a second language get more money andresources.Other states, like NewYork and Illinois, which arehome to some of our country’s largest public schooldistricts, have more regressive funding formulas.Since public schools areprimarily funded by localproperty taxes, studentswho live in high-incomecommunities across NewYork State, for example, attend more well-resourcedschools than children living in low-income communities.Legal efforts to dismantlethis separate and unequalfunding system are ongoing.4. Redesign teachertraining: The U.S. has awide variety of teacherpreparationprograms. There’s no common framework for thinking abouthow to prepare people tobecome teachers.Furthermore, in stateslike California and Texas, anew teacher can teach children in historically marginalized communities aftertwo months of preparation.Placing the most inexperienced teachers inschools with the most challenging working conditionsincreases turnover.Prepare forpower outageswith a Generachome standbygeneratorREQUEST AFREE QUOTE!844-805-2431FREE7-Year Extended Warranty*A 695 Value!Limited Time Offer – Call for DetailsSpecial Financing AvailableSubject to Credit Approval*To qualify, consumers must request a quote, purchase, installand activate the generator with a participating dealer.
