Academic Highlights1. No prior knowledge of Japanese language is necessary,and motivation to learn Japanese is welcome!2. About 20% of courses are taught in English.3. Some majors offer more English‐taught courses thanothers. For instance, Communications, InternationalRelations, Japan studies are widely taught in Englishand popular among exchange students.4. We have one‐year Japan Studies Certificate Programfor exchange students.5. Most of Japanese professors hold degrees fromuniversities outside of Japan.

FAQQ: Are exchange students allowed to choose from all English and Japanese taught courses andfrom any faculty?A: Yes, except for English for Liberal Arts (ELA) Program courses and doctor‐level graduate courses.UpdatedQ: Is there a minimum/maximum of courses to choose in total?A: First of all, we are on trimester system. Each term is 11 week long. Autumn Term is fromSeptember to November, Winter from December to March and Spring from April to June. In mostcases, our courses are worth either 2 or 3 credits and meet 2 or 3 70‐minute‐long periods perweek. Japanese as a Foreign Language courses are 2 or 5 or 10 credits, depending on the track. Ifa student decides to take a JLP course, the minimum number of credits per term will be 7. If s/hedecides not to take a JLP course, it will be 9. Maximum is 18 with Academic Adviser’s approval.You can find three sample weekly timetables at the end of the presentation.Q: When do students register for courses?A: At the beginning of the term at ICU. No prior registration is necessary before arrival. If astudent intends to take a JLP course, s/he must take a placement test (written and oral) at thebeginning of the first term, and carefully choose non‐JLP courses that do not conflict with his orher assigned JLP course.

Japanese as a Foreign Language Intensive Japanese Program: Designed to complete basic tointermediate level in 3 terms, at double the pace of theJapanese Program. It meets 4 days a week totaling 15 periods aweek carrying 10 credits a term. Japanese Program: Designed to give students a firmfoundation in communication skills, in both spoken and writtenJapanese. The Japanese Program meets 3 days a week totaling8 periods a week carrying 5 credits a term.New Japanese: Step by Step: Starting in Spring 2016, this newprogram is designed to develop everyday communicationcompetence in Japanese and provides practical skills includingreading and writing to help students fulfil university life inJapan. It has 4 levels at elementary stage, each consisting of 4periods of classroom teaching per week carrying 2 credits aterm.
