XJ Series 1999IntroductionElectrical Guide FormatThis Electrical Guide is made up of two major sections. The first section, at the front of the book, provides general informationfor and about the use of the book, and information and illustrations to aid in the understanding of the XJ Series electrical / electronic systems, as well as the location and identification of components. The second section includes the Figures, which are the basis of the book. Each Figure is identified by a Figure Number(i.e. Fig. 01.1) and Title, and is accompanied by a page of data containing information specific to that Figure. It is recommended that the user read through the front section of the book to develop a familiarity with the layout of thebook and with the system of symbols and abbreviations used. The Table of Contents on the following pages should helpto guide the user.Standard AbbreviationsThe following abbreviations are used throughout this Electrical Guide:B Battery VoltageCANController Area NetworkDIDirection IndicatorLHLeft-HandLHDLeft-Hand DriveLWBLong WheelbaseN/ANormally AspiratedNASNorth American SpecificationRHRight-HandRHDRight-Hand DriveROWRest of WorldSCSuperchargedSCPStandard Corporate Protocol NetworkVINVehicle Identification NumberRefer to the Vehicle Service Manual for a glossary of standard terms and their abbreviations.Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN)VIN ranges are presented throughout the book in the following manner: VIN 123456 indicates “up to VIN 123456”; VIN 123456 indicates “from VIN 123456 on”.XJ Series Electrical System ArchitectureThe XJ Series system architecture features vehicle “multiplexing”. Multiplexing allows for simplified wiring harnesseswhile providing greater flexibility in programming market variants. Two data networks are used in the system: a controller area network (CAN) for the engine, drive train and related systems, and a standard corporate protocol network (SCP) forthe body systems. Any vehicle subsystem depicted on the figures with the CAN or SCP included uses data derived fromthe network or transmits data via the network to achieve control. Messages for both networks are cataloged in the Appendix of this book. When appropriate, the user will be referred to the Appendix by a note on the Data page. In addition to the twonetworks, the XJ Series uses two serial data buses (ISO) for diagnostics, for the security system and for the programming ofcertain control modules. The XJ Series uses both power and logic grounds; however, it does not use a common logic ground stud connection as inprevious Sedan vehicles.DATE OF ISSUE:SEPTEMBER 19981
