Stewardship Reflection from Cardinal TobinJuly 31, 202218th Sunday in Ordinary Time.“Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of posses-sions.”Lʗʍʇ 12:15The Gospel message is contrary to modern culture that continually tries to convince us that our joy comesfrom the material things we possess. That the more we acquire, the happier we will be. Jesus shows us thatour true joy comes from our “invisible” gifts like love, mercy and forgiveness. True joy comes from“emptying” ourselves, giving of ourselves rather than always taking. We are called not to hoard but to share.True joy comes from living a grateful and generous lifestyle; become more “God-centered” and less “selfcentered.”Christ the King Roman Catholic Church Parish InformationMission Statement of Christ the King Roman Catholic ChurchWe will be open to the voice of God leading us to a greater love for each other and those looking for a place to worship. Summary of Today’s ReadingsReading I: Ecclesiastes 1: 2; 21-23At first enjoying the fruits of his toil, a man mustthen pass them on to some heir who did not labor toproduce them. Nor did that heir endure any of thetrials that production entailed. So it is foolhardy tobase one’s happiness solely on what we have done.Reading II: Colossians 3: 1-5, 9-11Jesus fulfilled all the promises made about the Messiah. Listed are the vices that have to be “put todeath” and the virtues that lead to holiness, teachinga person to set his/her heart on what lasts forever. The Gospel: Luke 12: 13-21This section provides us with a long meditation onthe harmful effects that many possessions can haveon true disciples. A Christian should aim to be richon “what matters to God.”Readings for the Week of July 31, 2022Monday: Jer 28:1-17; Ps 119:29, 43, 79, 80, 95, 102;Mt 14:13-21Tuesday: Jer 30:1-2, 12-15, 18-22; Ps 102:16-18, 1921, 29 and 22-23; Mt 14:22-36Wednesday: Jer 31:1-7; Jer 31:10, 11-12ab, 13; Mt15:21-28Thursday: Jer 31:31-34; Ps 51:12-13, 14-15, 18-19; Mt16:13-23Friday: Na 2:1, 3; 3:1-3, 6-7; Dt 32:35cd-36ab,39abcd, 41; Mt 16:24-28Saturday: Dn 7:9-10, 13-14; Ps 97:1-2, 5-6, 9; 2 Pt1:16-19; Lk 9:28b-36Sunday: Wis 18:6-9; Ps 33:1, 12, 18-19, 20-22; Heb11:1-2, 8-19 or Heb 11:1-2, 8-12; Lk 12:32-48 or Lk12:35-40MASS INTENTIONS: People of the ParishReflection on the Gospelby Rev. Leonard N. Peterson“Christmas in July” is a particular annual event thatTV shopping channels use to push products for theseason five months out. So I am told by my sisterswho are much aware of such. A clever idea for sure, perhaps even calculated to provide at least someimaginary relief from the heat and humidity of thepresent month. That idea of Christmas sales led me to think of apopular movie of that season called “It’s a Wonderful Life.” That 1946 classic featured a despicablecharacter known as Mr. Potter, played with panacheby the late Lionel Barrymore. You most likely knowhim as the antagonist of Jimmy Stewart’s characterGeorge Bailey, the hero of the story. One critic of the film calls it in actuality, a “darkfilm.” He writes, in part: “It’s a magical realist conceit, able to strike directly into the purpose of human existence and remind everyone that they’respecial for who they are.” But he continues: “Yet wehave to wade through the unrelentingly destructiveforces of capitalism the reminder that all peoplearound you get to succeed while you do not ” Allwell and good as analysis. For my purpose, I’d like to focus on Mr. Potter, whorepresents materialism in charge. He is always miserable, “speechifying” with a harsh and cynicalvoice. You get the unavoidable impression that forall his wealth, Potter is not a happy person. Joylessin the extreme. Our Lord could well use Mr. Potter as an example ofwhat He meant in His always masterful stories likethe one about the “rich man whose land produced abountiful harvest.” Note how Our Lord’s charactergoes past Mr. Potter by saying to himself “Rest, eat, drink, be merry.”’ But then comes God’s response, aunique powerful retort: “You fool!”I believe we have been given powerful food forthought as we have sat in our favorite comfy chairand watched on our large screens the beautiful faithfilled reaction of the Ukrainian people to the evilfoisted on them by Russia. With nothing more thanthe clothes on their backs and a small sack of familymementos, they have retained their hope and dreamof victory. They have their faith in God intact andtheir trust in Him solid. Not based on accumulatedpossessions. It is the ones with the multi-milliondollar yachts who are trapped by a poisoned outlookthat is far from a truly wonderful life. So, today werelearn the hard lesson that trusting in our possessions as a source of happiness is as foolish as well,“Christmas in July.” Put another way is this analogyfrom an anonymous source: “Riches are a golden keythat opens every door, save that of heaven.”God love you and give you His peace.693—Christ the King

May is the month of Mary. The women of the Rosary Altar Society pray the Rosary at 9:30 a.m. every Sunday. Please join the Rosarians to pray the Rosary during the month of May. We pray the Rosary to the Blessed Mother be-cause she is an advocate, helper, benefactress, and mediatrix. Her job began at the moment she conceived Jesus in her womb
