Battery-electric vehicles112233334IntroductionThe 2018 Fuel Consumption Guide provides modelspecific fuel consumption information about 2018 modelyear light-duty vehicles. The information can be used tocompare the fuel consumption of different models andhelp you to select the most fuel-efficient vehicle thatmeets your everyday needs.Fuel use is an ongoing expense and should be consideredwhen purchasing or leasing a vehicle. Choosing the mostfuel-efficient and appropriate size of vehicle, driving in afuel-efficient manner, using your vehicle only whenneeded and following the manufacturer’s operation andmaintenance recommendations for your vehicle can saveyou fuel and money year after year – even more if fuelprices rise. The choices you make about the vehicle you buy andhow you drive it also have a significant impact on theenvironment and our health. Greenhouse gases (GHGs),predominantly carbon dioxide (CO2), are produced whenfuel is burned in your vehicle’s engine. CO2 emissions aredirectly proportional to the amount of fuel consumed –for every litre of gasoline used, about 2.3 kilograms (kg)of CO2 are generated. Although not directly harmful toour health, CO2 emissions contribute to climate change. This guide is produced by Natural Resources Canada(NRCan) in cooperation with vehicle manufacturers.NRCan thanks the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers’Association and Global Automakers of Canada for theirassistance in the production of the 2018 guide. Specialthanks are extended to Environment and Climate ChangeCanada (ECCC) for collecting the fuel consumption dataprovided by vehicle manufacturers.About fuel consumption ratingsFuel consumption ratings help consumers makeinformed, energy-efficient purchase decisions byproviding a reliable comparison of the relative fuelconsumption performance of different vehicles. The annual fuel consumption information is collected inconjunction with ECCC's Energy and TransportationDirectorate. ECCC monitors the emissions of new lightduty vehicles sold in Canada by collecting detailed datafrom manufacturers and importers and by testingselected vehicles.Use the fuel consumption ratings search tool atvehicles.nrcan.gc.ca to compare the fuel consumptioninformation of different models. The vehicle with thebest fuel consumption ratings and lowest estimatedannual fuel cost can save you fuel and money for years.Remember, the lower the litres per 100 kilometres(L/100 km) rating, the lower the fuel consumption.Conversely, the higher the miles per gallon (mpg) rating, the better the fuel use.Fuel consumption testingIt would be difficult to drive every model of new vehicleon the road to measure fuel consumption, and almostimpossible to consistently duplicate on-road testingresults because many variables can affect a vehicle’sperformance. That is why vehicle manufacturers usestandard, controlled laboratory testing and analyticalprocedures to generate the fuel consumption data thatappear in the fuel consumption ratings search tool andon the EnerGuide label for vehicles.Manufacturers use the 5-cycle testing procedure, introduced for model year 2015, to determine the fuelconsumption ratings of new light-duty vehicles. Theimproved procedure better approximates typical drivingconditions and styles, resulting in fuel consumptionratings that are more representative of a vehicle’s onroad fuel consumption. The 5-cycle testing procedure supplements the standard(2-cycle) city and highway tests by integrating threeadditional test cycles that account for air conditioner use,1

2018 FUEL CONSUMPTION GUIDEcold temperature operation and driving at higher speedswith more rapid acceleration and braking. To view our video about the fuel consumption testingprocedure, visit vehicles.nrcan.gc.ca.Model year 2017 update: Some of the calculations usedby manufacturers to determine the fuel consumptionratings of their new vehicles were updated to betterreflect today's more fuel-efficient vehicles and advancedtechnologies such as hybrids and turbocharged engines. As a result, the ratings for a 2017 or later model maydiffer slightly from the model year 2016 ratings for thesame vehicle. How vehicles are testedSelected test vehicles are “run in” for about 6,000 kmbefore testing. The vehicle is then mounted on a chassisdynamometer programmed to take into account theaerodynamic efficiency, weight and rolling resistance ofthe vehicle. A trained driver runs the vehicle throughstandardized driving cycles that simulate trips in the cityand on the highway. Fuel consumption ratings arederived from the emissions generated during the drivingcycles. For detailed test information, visit vehicles.nrcan.gc.ca.Which vehicles are testedVehicle manufacturers are not required to submit fuelconsumption data for the following: sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and passenger vans with agross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of more than 4,536kg (10,000 pounds [lb.]) – GVWR is the weight of thevehicle plus maximum carrying capacity (passengersand cargo) other vehicles with a GVWR of more than 3,856 kg(8,500 lb.) or a curb weight of more than 2,722 kg(6,000 lb.) – curb weight is the weight of the vehiclewithout passengers and cargoVehicles that exceed these limits are not tested, so theirfuel consumption ratings do not appear in the fuelconsumption ratings search tool or on the EnerGuidelabel.Your fuel consumption will varyFuel consumption ratings show the fuel consumptionthat may be achieved with a properly maintained vehicledriven with fuel efficiency in mind. The ratings provide areliable comparison of the fuel consumption of differentvehicles. However, no laboratory test can simulate allcombinations of conditions that may be experienced bydrivers. Your vehicle’s fuel consumption will vary from itspublished fuel consumption ratings, depending on how, where and when you drive. The following factors affect the fuel consumption of yourvehicle: acceleration, driving speed, the age andcondition of your vehicle, temperature, weather, trafficand road conditions, the drivetrain, and the poweredaccessories (like air conditioning) installed on yourvehicle. In addition, small variations in vehicle manufacturingmay cause fuel consumption differences in the samemake and model, and some vehicles do not attainoptimal fuel consumption until they are “run in” forabout 6,000 to 10,000 km.To view our video about factors that impact fuelefficiency, visit vehicles.nrcan.gc.ca.Hybrid vehicles are particularly sensitive to drivingconditions and behaviours and can exhibit greatervariations in fuel consumption than conventionalvehicles. Moderate differences in how, where and whenyou drive can have a significant impact on how muchyour hybrid’s gasoline engine is used.Published ratings are a useful tool for comparingvehicles before you buy, but keep in mind that they’rebased on standardized tests and may not accuratelypredict the fuel consumption you will get on the road.EnerGuide label for vehiclesEnerGuide is the official Government of Canada mark forrating and labelling the energy consumption or energyefficiency of products including new vehicles, appliances, heating and cooling equipment, and houses that havehad an energy efficiency evaluation. For moreinformation, visit EnerGuide in Canada The EnerGuide label for vehicles provides model-specificfuel consumption information for new light-duty vehiclesavailable for retail sale in Canada, including passengercars, vans, pickup trucks and SUVs. Use the EnerGuidelabel to compare new vehicle fuel consumptioninformation and identify the most fuel-efficient newvehicle that meets your everyday needs.2

2018 FUEL CONSUMPTION GUIDEEnerGuide labels should remain on new vehicles untilthey are sold. If a new vehicle has no label, ask the dealerfor the manufacturer’s fuel consumption information forthe vehicle.New EnerGuide labelA redesigned EnerGuide label was introduced with modelyear 2016 vehicles. The new label reflects the improvedtesting and provides you with more comprehensive fuelconsumption and environmental information. Here is asample label for a gasoline vehicle – slightly differentlabels appear on vehicles that use other types of fuel.Driving fuel efficientlyAdopt these 5 fuel-efficient driving techniques to reduceyour fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions byas much as 25%:1.
