chapter 1Welcome to Mbox 2Welcome to the Mbox 2 audio and MIDI production system. Up to a total of four channels of input, usinganalog and digital inputs simultaneouslyMbox 2 and Pro Tools LE provide yourUSB-equipped computer with two channels ofanalog audio input and output, two channels ofdigital audio input and output, MIDI In and Outports, analog monitor outs, and a headphoneoutput with front panel level control. Mbox 2provides professional-quality mic preamps and24-bit analog-to-digital and digital-to-analogconverters. One MIDI In and one MIDI Out port, providing 16 MIDI input channels and 16 MIDI output channelsMbox 2 FeaturesThe Mbox 2 provides the following: Two channels of analog audio input with microphone preamps and switchable 48V phantom power Analog input jacks include two XLR andtwo 1/4-inch connectors (one TRS, one TS),with switchable Mic, Line, and DI levels –20 dB pad available separately on each analog input channel Two 1/4-inch TRS analog monitor outputs 24-bit A/D and D/A converters, supportingsample rates of 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz Zero-latency analog record monitoring withadjustable balance between input and playback Mono switch for enhanced monitoring of single-channel input sources (does not affect recording) 1/4-inch (TRS) stereo headphone output withadjustable level control USB-powered operationMbox 2 will not function properly if connected to a passive USB hub. If you need touse a hub for other USB peripherals, use apowered hub or a separate dedicated USBport for Mbox 2 to function properly. Pro Tools LE CapabilitiesPro Tools LE on Mac or Windows provides thefollowing capabilities with Mbox 2: Playback of up to 48 mono or stereo digitalaudio tracks, or a combination of playingback and recording up to 48 mono or stereodigital audio tracks, depending on the capabilities of your computer.System Requirements andCompatibilityMbox 2 can be used with a qualified Windowsor Mac computer running Pro Tools LE software.A DVD drive is required to use the Pro Tools Installer disc. Up to 128 audio tracks (with up to 48 activetracks), 128 Auxiliary Input tracks, 64 Master Fader tracks, 256 MIDI tracks, and 32 Instrument tracks per session.We can only assure compatibility and providesupport for hardware and software it has testedand approved. 16-bit or 24-bit audio resolution, at samplerates up to 48 kHz.For complete system requirements and a list ofqualified computers, operating systems, harddrives, and third-party devices, refer to the latestinformation on our website: Non-destructive, random-access editingand mix automation. If you are installing Pro Tools on aWindows computer, see Chapter 3, “InstallingPro Tools on Windows.”Before installing this version of Pro Tools,refer to the Read Me information includedon the Pro Tools Installer disc.Installation OverviewInstallation of the Mbox 2 on a Mac includes thefollowing steps:1 “Installing Pro Tools LE and Connecting YourInterface” on page 5.2 “Launching Pro Tools LE” on page 7.Installing Pro Tools LE andConnecting Your InterfaceBefore connecting your Pro Tools LE interface tothe computer, you need to install Pro Tools LEsoftware.Do not start this procedure with yourMbox 2 connected to your computer.To install Pro Tools LE on Mac OS X:1 Make sure you are logged in as an Administra-tor for the account where you want to installPro Tools.For details on Administrator privileges inMac OS X, see your Apple OS X documentation.3 Configuring your system for improved perfor-mance (see Chapter 4, “Configuring YourPro Tools System”).2 Insert the Pro Tools LE Installer disc in your4 Making audio connections to the Mbox 2 (see3 On the Installer disc, locate and double-clickChapter 6, “Making Hardware Connections”).Install Pro Tools LE.mpkg.DVD drive.The Pro Tools Installer disc includes additional software for your system. 4 Follow the on-screen instructions to proceedInstallation Optionswith installation.5 Click Continue each time you are prompted.6 At the Installation Type page, do one of thefollowing: To install all Pro Tools application files andfree plug-in suites (and associated content),leave the default Installation options selected and click Continue.– or – Select (or deselect) a custom configurationof Installation options (see “InstallationOptions” on page 6) and click Continue.7 Click Install.8 If prompted, enter your Administrator pass-word and click OK to authenticate the installation.9 Follow the remaining on-screen instructions.10 When installation is complete, click Restart.11 After the computer has started, connect thesmall end of the included USB cable to the USBport on Mbox 2 and connect the other end toany available USB port on your computer.If the USB LED on the front panel of theMbox 2 does not illuminate, try unpluggingthe USB cable from the Mbox 2 USB port,and plugging it back in. If the USB LED stilldoes not illuminate, shut down the computer, disconnect Mbox 2 and start thecomputer. Once the computer has fully restarted, reconnect Mbox 2.Mbox 2 may not function properly if connected to a USB hub. If you need to use ahub for other USB peripherals, connect thehub to a separate USB port; Mbox 2 must beconnected to a dedicated port on the computer in order to function properly.6Mbox 2 Setup GuidePro Tools LE OptionsTo install a subset of Pro Tools software andplug-ins (and associated content), click the reveal triangle for the Pro Tools LE 8.0 option inthe installer, and deselect any of the followingoptions that you do not want installed.Application Files (Required for Pro Tools) Installs the Pro Tools application and supportinglibrary files needed to run Pro Tools. This optionalso installs the Digidesign CoreAudio Driver.This option must be selected to install Pro Tools.DigiRack Plug-Ins Installs free plug-ins includingDigiRack plug-ins, free Bomb Factory plug-ins,and Eleven Free, TL Utilities, D-Fi, and Maximplug-ins.Pro Tools Creative Collection Installs a set of freeRTAS effects plug-ins and virtual instrumentplug-ins (including 4.4 GB of associated samplecontent). For more information, see the CreativeCollection Plug-ins Guide.Additional OptionsThe Pro Tools installer provides the followingadditional options to install along withPro Tools software and plug-ins.Digidesign CoreAudio Driver This option installsthe Digidesign CoreAudio Driver, which letsyou use qualified audio interfaces with thirdparty applications that support the CoreAudioDriver standard.Avid Video Engine This option lets you integrateAvid video peripherals (such as the AvidMojo with your Pro Tools system).MIDI I/O Driver The MIDI I/O Driver is required if you are using the Digidesign MIDI I/Ointerface.
Launching Pro Tools LEWhen launching Pro Tools LE the first time, youare prompted to enter an authorization code tovalidate your software. (The code begins withthe letters DIGI.)To authorize Pro Tools LE software:1 Make sure Mbox 2 is connected to your com-puter.Additional Software on thePro Tools Installer DiscThe Pro Tools LE Installer disc provides additional software for your system, including audiodrivers (for playing other audio applicationsthrough your Digidesign hardware) and aPro Tools demo session.Check your Pro Tools Installer disc for additional software and installers.2 Click the Pro Tools LE icon in the Dock (ordouble-click the application icon in thePro Tools folder inside the Digidesign folder).Third-Party Applications andPlug-ins3 Enter the authorization code in the dialogYour Pro Tools package also includes several freeapplications and plug-ins from selected thirdparty developers. Once you've completed yourPro Tools installation, you can install these separately. Go to the Additional Files/3rd PartyContent folder on the Pro Tools LE Installerdisc.(making sure to type it exactly as printed, andobserving any spaces and capitalization), thenclick Validate. (Your authorization code is located on the inside front cover of this guide.)4 Use the Quick Start dialog to do one ofthe following: Create a new session from template. Create a new blank session.Mbox 2 Factory Bundle Plug-ins Open any other session on your system.If you purchased a Factory version of Mbox 2, goto the Additional Files/Factory Bundle Installersfolder on the Pro Tools LE Installer disc and runthe Install Mbox 2 Factory Bundle installer.Mbox 2 CoreAudio DriverThe Mbox 2 CoreAudio Driver is a multi-client,multichannel sound driver that allows CoreAudio compatible applications to record and playback through Digidesign hardware.Quick Start dialogFor more information on the QuickStart dialog and session templates, see thePro Tools Reference Guide (Help ProTools Reference Guide).The Mbox 2 CoreAudio Driver is installed by default when you install Pro Tools.For information on configuring theMbox 2 CoreAudio Driver, see the CoreAudio Drivers Guide.Chapter 2: Installing Pro Tools on Mac7
Standalone Mbox 2 CoreAudio DriverThe Mbox 2 CoreAudio Driver can be installedas a standalone driver on Mac systems that donot have Pro Tools software installed.
