Group 1: LiteratureIB LiteratureThe IB Diploma Programme language A:literature course develops understanding of thetechniques involved in literary criticism andpromotes the ability to form independent literaryjudgments. In language A: literature, the formalanalysis of texts and wide coverage of a variety ofliterature—both in the language of the subject andin translated texts from other cultural domains—iscombined with a study of the way literaryconventions shape responses to texts.

Group 1: Language & LiteratureIB Language & LiteratureLanguage and literature comprises four parts—two relate to thestudy of language and two to the study of literature. The study of the texts produced in a language is central to anactive engagement with language and culture and, by extension,to how we see and understand the world in which we live. A keyaim of the language A: language and literature course is toencourage students to question the meaning generated bylanguage and texts, which, it can be argued, is rarelystraightforward and unambiguous. Helping students to focusclosely on the language of the texts they study and to becomeaware of the role of each text’s wider context in shaping itsmeaning is central to the course.

Group 2: Language AcquisitionThese courses are designed to providestudents with the necessary skills andintercultural understanding to enablethem to communicate successfully in anenvironment where the languagestudied is spoken.Ab InitioHL/SLStudents develop their ability tocommunicate through the study oflanguage, themes and texts.

Group 3: Individuals & SocietiesThe Diploma Programme (DP)history course is a world historycourse based on a comparative,multi-perspective approach tohistory and focuses around keyhistorical concepts such as change, causation and significance. It involvesthe study of a variety of types ofhistory, including political, economic, social and cultural, encouragingstudents to think historically and todevelop historical skills.History of the Americas/ 20thCentury HistoryThe global politics course allowsstudents to develop anunderstanding of the local, national, international and global dimensionsof political activity, as well asallowing them the opportunity toexplore political issues affecting theirown lives.Global Politics

Group 3: Individuals & SocietiesThe IB Diploma Programmepsychology course is the systematicstudy of behaviour and mentalprocesses. The psychology course examines theinteraction of biological, cognitiveand sociocultural influences onhuman behaviour.PsychologyThe business management courseis designed to develop students’knowledge and understanding ofbusiness management theories, aswell as their ability to apply arange of tools and techniques.Business Management

Group 4: SciencesBiology investigates the living world atall levels using many differentapproaches and techniques.Chemistry is an experimentalscience that combines academicstudy with the acquisition ofpractical and investigational skills. At one end of the scale is the cell, itsmolecular construction and complexmetabolic reactions. At the other end ofthe scale biologists investigate theinteractions that make wholeecosystems function. It is often called the central scienceas chemical principles underpinboth the physical environment inwhich we live and all biologicalsystems.BiologyChemistry

Group 4: SciencesPhysics is the most fundamental of theexperimental sciences, as it seeks toexplain the universe itself from the verysmallest particles to the vast distancesbetween galaxies.Despite the exciting and extraordinarydevelopment of ideas throughout thehistory of physics, observations remainessential to the very core of the subject.Models are developed to try to understandobservations, and these themselves canbecome theories that attempt to explainthe observations.PhysicsThrough studying environmental systemsand societies (ES&S) students will beprovided with a coherent perspective of theinterrelationships between environmentalsystems and societies; one that enablesthem to adopt an informed personalresponse to the wide range of pressingenvironmental issues that they willinevitably come to face. The teaching approach is such thatstudents are allowed to evaluate thescientific, ethical and socio-political aspectsof issues.Environmental Systems & Societies

Group 4: Sciences*The IB computer science courseis a rigorous and practicalproblem-solving discipline.Computational thinking lies atthe heart of the course and isintegrated with other topics. This will be supported bypractical activities includingprogramming.Computer Science*These are available as primary science classes to students whoare also taking a lab science or who have satisfied the labscience requirements in 10th grade.Sports, Exercise & Health Scienceincorporates the traditionaldisciplines of anatomy andphysiology, biomechanics, psychology and nutrition, whichare studied in the context ofsports, exercise and health.Students will cover a range ofcore and option topics, and carryout practical (experimental)investigations in both laboratoryand field setting.Sports, Exercise &Health Science
