NFPA Continues to Strengthen the FluidPower IndustryHalfway through NFPA’s fiscal year, we have seengrowth in a number of areas within the associationas well as within the industry. Sales have picked upagain for a number of our member companies, and anumber of NFPA’s programs have set the groundworkfor enhanced value and reach. Through this time ofchange and growth, our focus remains on the fouressential value propositions that our members findmost essential.Jeff HandPresident & CEOROSS Controls2021-22 Chair of NFPABoard of DirectorsIn our efforts to create an Effective Forum, we havestruck a balance between virtual and in-person eventsand activities to meet the needs of our membership.The next opportunity is the 2022 Annual Conference,taking place February 22-24, 2022 in Phoenix, Arizona,which will feature enhanced learning and networkingopportunities for industry leaders as well as a virtualoption for those who can’t travel but wish to view thepresentations. Registration is open at NFPAHub.com/Events.Other highlights from the past six months include:successful Quarterly Conferences, each engaging a record number of members in new technical Twocontent.conclusion of our inaugural Executive Leadership Program cohort, an interactive learning experience Thefor Future Leaders, conducted in collaboration with the Kellogg School of Management. Applications areopen for the second cohort, and more information will be released in the coming months.of ongoing ISO and ANSI standardization meetings, helping to ensure close collaboration with Dozenscustomers on their use of fluid power.In our efforts to provide timely Industry Statistics, we have provided members with market data and intelligenceto help improve their business decision making. We have continued our strong participation in key programs andprovided valuable updates to enhance them.Other highlights include:successful return to in-person programming at the 2021 Industry and Economic Outlook Conference, Awhichalso provided valuable live-streamed content for virtual attendees and an enhanced platform forpresentation replay for all who attended.of updates to report content layout and analysis to make them easier to use and more valuable AtonumberNFPA members as they use them to plan for 2022.to the Business Intelligence program, which now has a content library available to members Enhancementsat NFPAHub.com with reports from past surveys of NFPA membership. The program aims to bring valuableinformation to decision makers on emerging issues for which formal data programs don’t currently exist.

To date, fluid power Aeducationprograms have been placed in the 2021 World Ag Expo and 2021 Utility Expo on-demandofferings, and submissions have been created for additional trade shows in 2022.In our efforts to build an Educated Workforce, we have focused on our key workforce development programswhile working to aggressively scale and expand to reach additional communities across the country, includingthose that are underserved.Activities have included:recognition of two new Power Partner Universities, Milwaukee School of Engineering and Iowa State TheUniversity, for their continued commitment to fluid power education and industry connection.expansion of the Fluid Power Vehicle Challenge to more than 20 teams from schools across the Thecountry, including schools that have previously not had much involvement in NFPA’s programs.plans for additional Fast Track Hubs across the country. Over 100 fluid power engineers from Italy,Sweden, France, Germany, Turkey, Poland, Switzerland,United Kingdom, Japan, Sweden, China, Portugal, andthe United States came together in meetings focusedon terms and symbols, product testing, hydraulicinstallations and systems, cylinders, sealing devices,treatment of air and pneumatic component reliability.TC 131 is responsible for 237 published standards, with 33currently under development. Thefinal session took place in conjunction with the 2021Industry & Economic Outlook Conference.Registration for the second program cohort is nowopen, and session titles and dates will be available inthe coming months.The program will consist of a series of 13 total educationsessions over the course of 24 months and is designedto provide a fluid power industry-specific experiencethat accelerates leadership and fosters long-termconnections. Market Reportsand DataProgramsParticipation-based programs: Participation in these programs is needed to receive thesereports.The ConfidentialShipments Statistics(CSS) Programpresents data onmonthly orders andshipments and helpsusers understandtrends and anticipatechange in the industry. Data is collectedfrom participating manufacturers,compiled by a third party to maintainconfidentiality, and results are then onlysent to CSS participants.The State of theFluid Power IndustrySurvey is a quick andeasy electronic surveydesigned to identifymonthly industryexpectations basedon the opinions ofparticipants using multiple choicequestions concerning the current andfuture state of the industry. There is aversion for manufacturers and anotherfor distributors. Participants receiveresults from both surveys.The Customer MarketSurvey providesanalysis of fluid powercustomer marketand sales channelsegmentation. Thissurvey is conductedamong NFPA membercompanies every year. The survey’s fluidpower sales data is collected throughan independent market research firmto maintain confidentiality. Only surveyparticipants have access to the annualresults.Non-participation-based programs: Reports are available to all NFPA members.Customer MarketFile is a monthlyfile containing dataand trend graphsfor several key U.S.customer markets,popular economicindicators, andproducer pricing. The data can be usedfor your company’s internal analysisneeds and is easily transferred intoanalytical tools such as NFPA’s StatsToolkit.Global MarketReports and Forecastsare a collection ofreports covering ourglobal marketplace,from high-level macrodata and leadingindicators to verydetailed analysis and forecasts ofpopular customer markets, includingspecific by-country analyses andforecasts. The report is done by OxfordEconomics.NFPA Forecast: U.S.Customer Marketsis a quarterly reportby ITR Economics andincludes an outlook,trend graph, andcommentary on thecurrent year and twoyears ahead for fluid power, hydraulics,pneumatics, and 29 customer markets,plus articles and insights into othereconomic events, topics, overviews,indicators, and questions.The Annual Surveyof Fluid PowerManufacturersincludes fluid powermarket and productlevel shipment dollardata for the U.S. fluidpower industry, makingit an indispensable tool for determiningmarket size, share and segmentation.International TradeData is collected bythe U.S. Census Bureau,Foreign Trade Divisionand is summarized witha particular focus onfluid power products.This report alsoincludes country-by-country breakouts.The report is semiannual.The U.S. Fluid PowerRegional DemandEstimates Reportprofiles the geographicdistribution of fluidpower products toend-use industries bystate, including fluidpower sales dollars, sales percentage,and number of establishments.

NFPA helps increase the numberof technical college and universitystudents educated in fluid powerand connects them to careers in thefluid power industry.Getting Industry Donors InvolvedThe Pascal Society is the annual giving society of theNFPA Education and Technology Foundation—a taxexempt, charitable organization dedicated to meetingthe workforce development needs of the U.S. fluidpower industry. So far this year, Pascal Donors havetaken part in various opportunities in order to connectwith students through NFPA programs that theirdonations support. Donors have visited classrooms(in-person and virtually) to talk with students aboutfluid power careers through NFPA’s Speaker’s Bureauprogram, they have attended Industry Connectionevents at MSOE, Purdue and Iowa State University, andthey have volunteered to mentor university teams inthe Fluid Power Vehicle Challenge program. Even morewill judge the Vehicle Challenge Midway Reviews andFinal Competition in April 2022.Impact theFuture of theIndustrySupporting Internship ProgramsNFPA has launched an Internship Support Programto help members find qualified candidates who areinterested in fluid power and help students get directlyconnected to fluid power internships, co-ops and fulltime jobs.Through this program, NFPA is offering up to 5,000to help support NFPA member company fluid powerinternship/co-op programs.24 members from 14companies serving as Fluid PowerVehicle Challenge mentorsNFPA staff will collect applications and resumesfrom students interested in fluid power and providemembers who apply to the program with informationon quality candidates for their open positions. If amember hires one of the students, they will receive 5,000 from NFPA to help cover costs.To be eligible, a company must: Be an NFPA member Have a quality, fluid power internship or co-opprogram up and running at the company.So far, six member companies have applied, andstudent applications are starting to be collected.

The pathway covers multipleeducation levels in the community: First is a community-wide Fluid Power ActionChallenge event. The Action Challenge serves as anintroduction to fluid power and is a competitionthat challenges middle school students to solve anengineering problem using fluid power. Second is equipping local high school classroomswith fluid power training equipment. Third is the technical school with a validated fluidpower curriculum.The local network of industry partners connecting withteachers and students is also extremely important. FastTrack would not be successful without industry mentorsgetting students interested and eventually recruitingthem when they graduate.Right now, we have two Fast Track communities. One isheadquartered at Waukesha County Technical Collegein Wisconsin and the other is Triton College in Illinois.Local NFPA members inspire students to make theirway down the Fast Track path into an exciting fluidpower career. Work has started on launching more FastTrack communities around the country where studentsand industry would both greatly benefit.Enhancing Fluid Power Education atUniversitiesThe sixth annual NFPA Fluid Power Vehicle Challengeis underway. A welcome addition to this year’s programwas a Networking Mixer intended to bring studentsand industry together to discuss career opportunitiesand project plans. Over 90 people attended that event.With a record number of participating teams, two finalcompetition events will be held this cycle. The firstwill be hosted by Danfoss Power Solutions in Ames,Iowa on April 20-22, and the other will take placethe following week, hosted by Norgren in Littleton,Colorado on April 27-29, 2022.This year has also seen growth in Fluid Power Clubparticipation. The program is designed to helpuniversity students learn about fluid power technologyand get connected to NFPA members to learn aboutcareer opportunities in fluid power. So far, 10 clubs atuniversities across the country are participating in theprogram.The NFPA University Power Partner Programis a recognition program designed to showcaseuniversities that actively participate in all NFPA fluidpower educational programs. As of today, there arethree schools recognized by the program: Iowa StateUniversity, Milwaukee School of Engineering andPurdue University. Their industry connections eventswere held in fall of 2021 and connected dozens ofstudents and industry members.
