THE OLYMPIC HANDBALL TOURNAMENTSField handball was first played at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. Contested by 16 maleteams, the first Olympic indoor handball tournament was played in Munich 36 years later, in1972.In 1976 in Montreal, 1980 in Moscow and 1984 in Los Angeless, twelve men's and six women'steams competed for Olympic medals. At the 1988 tournament in Seoul the number of women'steams rose to eight and for Sydney 2000 this has been further increased to ten.The International Handball Federation continues in its efforts to secure equal treatment forwomen's handball at Olympic Games and raise the number of women's teams to twelve, sameas the men. We are awaiting a decision on a proposal to this effect submitted to the IOC.LES TOURNOIS OLYMPIQUES DE HANDBALLLe handball figurait pour la première fois sur le programme olympique en 1936 à Berlin, avec lehandball à onze joueurs.
