12/8/2011Chemicals Besides fingerprint powders, there are anumber of chemical processes that can beused to develop latent impressions If you don’t have them available, package theitems properly and submit to lab personnel We will now discuss some of the morecommon processes available that are simple touse and affordablePresented byScott Campbell12-08-11Processing Non-Porous Items Cyanoacrylate Fuming (Superglue) Sticky-Side Powder SPR (Small Particle Reagent)Processing Porous Items Ninhydrin Iodine FumingCyanoacrylate EquipmentCyanoacrylate(Superglue) Reacts with certain eccrine and sebaceouscomponents in the latent print (moisture) Produces white ridges Since there is no direct contact with the latentimpressions such as with a dusting brush, there is less chance of wiping away ordestroying fragile printsGlue, Aluminum Tray, Heater1

12/8/2011Preservation of Impressions Always photograph after development With scale and label Fill frame Camera parallel to surface Follow up with chemicals and ALSor Dust with black powder applied with a cottonball, lift impression and attach to lift cardSticky-Side/Wet WopApply and allow the solution to set anywherefrom a few seconds up to 60 seconds, then rinseoff with a slow stream of cold water. Allow todry, photograph, then cover with a clear sheetof acetate, or tape over with plastic fingerprinttape attaching to a lift card.Materials & EquipmentSticky-Side PowderWet Wop & Wet Powder All are used to process the sticky side of adhesivetapes and adhere to residue from the latents Sticky-Side powder is mixed with a solution of 50%distilled water and 50% Photo-Flo to a consistency ofthin paint, then applied with a camels hair brush Wet Wop and Wet Powder are premixed and areapplied with a camels hair brush Wet Wop & Wet Powder are available in both black, and white colorsSticky-Side Powder Equipment Sticky-Side Powder w/ Distilled Water &Photo-Flo Or premixed Wet Wop Mixing Container Camels Hair BrushAdhesive Tapes3

12/8/2011Small Particle Reagent Also called WetPrint. It is used primarily toprocess non-porous wet evidence. It adheresto the fatty substances in the latent print.Spray a light mist of the solution on the area ofsuspected latent impressions. After latentsdevelop, rinse with water to remove excesssolution. Photograph and lift when dry.Spray the solution on the wet itemSPR (WetPrint) processing completed.Photograph, let dry and lift impression.Rinse the SPR gently with waterPreservation of Impressions Always photograph after development With scale and label Fill frame Camera parallel to surface Allow to dry and lift with fingerprint tapeor While still wet, dry area adjacent toimpression, attach tape and while laying tapedown, force the water out from under the tape5

12/8/2011Proper sequence for processingporous surfaces Visual examination Inherent fluorescence by laser or alternatelight source (includes UV) Powders may work if prints are fresh Iodine fuming Ninhydrin or DFO with light source Physical developerNinhydrin, squirt bottle, iron, gloves, tongs, glass dish.Drying the porous item in aventilated hoodNinhydrin Ninhydrin is used to develop latentimpressions on porous surfaces. It reactswith the amino acids present in perspiration.Ninhydrin can be applied by spraying, dipping,or painting. After the solution is applied, it must be dried. Then, heat and humidity (60%-80% for bestresults) is applied which will produce purpleridge detail.Application of liquid ninhydrinSteam Iron and Humidity Cabinet6

Printsfluoresce with laser or alternate light source. Physical Developer (PD): Reacts with fats andoils. Can be used to process items subjectedto water. Silver Nitrate: Reacts with the sodium chloride(salt) in perspiration.8

examined the Raman spectra of latent fingerprints as part of a study on the detection of drugs of abuse. Hemmila et al [23] have recently used FTIR reflectance spectra of latent prints, with partial least squares regression, to show that fingerprints could be used to gauge the age of an individual, based on the fingerprint composition.

Chemical Formulas and Equations continued How Are Chemical Formulas Used to Write Chemical Equations? Scientists use chemical equations to describe reac-tions. A chemical equation uses chemical symbols and formulas as a short way to show what happens in a chemical reaction. A chemical equation shows that atoms are only rearranged in a chemical .
