You are ranked in orderof merit based on your ATAR.The ATAR ranges between zero and 99.95. It reports yourrank relative to all other WA students of Year 12 school leavingage and considers the number of students with a TertiaryEntrance Aggregate (TEA) as well as the number of people ofYear 12 school leaving age in the population of this state. AnATAR of 75.00 indicates that you have an overall rating equalto or better than 75% of the Year 12 school leaving agepopulation in Western Australia. The ATAR is calculated using scaled scores in ATAR courses.4

SCALINGAll course results will be scaled to ensure fairness to allstudents. A scaled score for an ATAR course can only becalculated if a student sits the ATAR course examination forthat course. The Average Marks Scaling process is used toscale marks obtained in a course.CALCULATION OF THE TEAThe ATAR is derived from the Tertiary Entrance Aggregate(TEA). In 2023, the TEA will be calculated by adding your bestfour scaled scores plus any applicable course-specificbonuses, as detailed below, based on the following rules:Courses which can be used in the ATAR are listed following. For all universities you may accumulate scaled scores whichcontribute to your ATAR over five consecutive years, with nocourse counting more than once. You may use previous scaledscores back to 2019. No more than two mathematics scaledscores can be used in the calculation of an ATAR.There are unacceptable course combinations whereby scoresin both courses cannot both be used (see explanation underUnacceptable Course Combinations below).A LOTE bonus of 10% of a LOTE scaled score is added to theaggregate of the best four scaled scores, subject to no LOTEscaled score earlier than 2018 being used. If more than oneLOTE has been sat, only one (the best) LOTE scaled scorecan be used as the LOTE bonus. You receive the LOTE bonusirrespective of whether your LOTE course scaled score wascounted as one of the best four.A Mathematics bonus of 10% of the scaled score for each ofMathematics Methods ATAR and Mathematics SpecialistATAR is added to the aggregate of the best four scaled scores. You receive the Mathematics bonus irrespective of whetherthese scaled scores are counted in the best four.In calculating the scaled score, equal weight is given to thefinal school mark and the final examination mark, except wherecourses are taken on a non-school basis (see explanationunder Courses Studied on a Non-school Basis below).Scaled scores from previous study of WACE courses are onthe same scale as scaled scores obtained from study in 2023and will be used directly in the calculation of an ATAR, ifapplicable. The maximum TEA is 430.TEA TO ATARTISC will construct a table to convert your TEA to an ATAR.The table considers the number of students with a TEA andthe number of people of Year 12 school leaving age in thestate. This table is constructed annually.PRIOR YEAR ATARIf you have an ATAR from a previous year, you will be giventhe benefit of the higher of your previous ATAR and yourcurrent ATAR. If you have not previously satisfied the WACErequirement or a university’s competence in Englishrequirement, you must satisfy current requirements.COURSES WHICH ARE USED TO FORM THE ATARNOTE: There are two groups of courses: ATAR and General courses. Only ATAR courses can be included in the ATAR, and studentsmust have sat the external ATAR course examination to obtain a scaled score.Aboriginal and Intercultural Studies ATARIndonesian: Background Language ATAR*Accounting and Finance ATARIndonesian: First Language ATAR*Ancient History ATARIndonesian: Second Language ATAR*Animal Production Systems ATARIntegrated Science ATARApplied Information Technology ATARItalian: Background Language ATAR*Arabic ATAR*Italian: Second Language ATAR*Aviation ATARJapanese: Background Language ATAR*Biology ATARJapanese: First Language ATAR*Business Management and Enterprise ATARJapanese: Second Language ATAR*Career and Enterprise ATARKorean: Background Language ATAR*Chemistry ATARLiterature ATARChildren, Family and the Community ATARMalay: Background Speakers ATAR*Chinese: Background Language ATAR*Marine and Maritime Studies ATARChinese: First Language ATAR*Materials Design and Technology ATARChinese: Second Language ATAR*Mathematics Applications ATARComputer Science ATARMathematics Methods ATARDance ATARMathematics Specialist ATARDesign ATARMedia Production and Analysis ATARDrama ATARModern Greek ATAR*Earth and Environmental Science ATARModern History ATAREconomics ATARMusic ATAREngineering Studies ATAROutdoor Education ATAREnglish ATARPhilosophy and Ethics ATAREnglish as an Additional Language or Dialect (EALD) ATARPhysical Education Studies ATARFood Science and Technology ATARPhysics ATARFrench: Background Language ATAR*Plant Production Systems ATARFrench: Second Language ATAR*Polish ATAR*Geography ATARPolitics and Law ATARGerman: Background Language ATAR*Psychology ATAR5

Your scaled score in coursesyou sit on a non-school basis will be based on your courseexamination mark only. The School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA)administers non-school candidature. SCSA places restrictionson school leaver students sitting ATAR courses as non-schoolcandidates. If you wish to sit ATAR courses on a non-schoolbasis contact SCSA, Mason Bird Building, Level 2, 303Sevenoaks Street, Cannington 6107, phone (08) 9273 6300,www.scsa.wa.edu.au for advice. SCSA has a deadline forenrolling as a non-school candidate. You will not be able to use results from courses sat on a nonschool basis to meet the WACE requirement.SELECTION RANKSFor most courses, 2023 Year 12 students will be selected foradmission to university in 2024 based on their ATAR.However, some universities assign students who are eligiblefor alternative entry pathways a Selection Rank that is higherthan their ATAR. For these students, selection into courses atthe university concerned is based on this enhanced SelectionRank.Eligibility for the entry pathways is based on specified criteria.TISC advises students of their eligibility at the time of the Year12 results/ATAR release in late December, via the UniversitiesAdmission Advice Letter (UAAL). The appropriate SelectionRank is automatically applied for offer rounds. For 2024 admission, Curtin University has the StepUp to CurtinEntry Pathway, ECU has the ECU Access Pathway, MurdochUniversity has RISE and UWA has the Broadway AlternativeEntry Pathway. For further details about any of thesepathways, see the individual university section on TISC’swebsite. For some university courses Selection Ranks are based onadditional criteria as well as the ATAR. The criteria mayinclude bridging/special course units, interviews, auditions, folio presentations, aptitude tests, fitness requirements, etc.6

Detailed information is available from the individualuniversities.4.PREREQUISITESMake sure that you satisfy the prerequisites for admission tothe university course of your choice. Prerequisites are coursesor special requirements that must be successfully completedfor entry to particular university courses.Generally, a scaled score of 50 or more in an ATAR course isrequired for prerequisite purposes. See individual universitycourse entries which follow for details.Prerequisites may be satisfied by results from the current yearor previous four years.Murdoch University does not require applicants to haveundertaken specific prerequisite courses and instead providesintroductory units to enable its students to become skilled inspecific areas in which they may be lacking.7
