The finalists are:Bayer’s Crop Science Division presents its geneticallymodified XtendFlex soybeans as the industry’s firsttriple-stacked soybean trait with tolerance to dicamba,glyphosate and glufosinate. XtendFlex soybeans,debuted in 2021, represent Bayer’s second majorproduct launch in soybeans in the last five years. Withtolerance to three herbicides, farmers gain greaterflexibility – pre-emergence or post-emergence – inmanaging weeds, such as waterhemp (Amaranthusspp), Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri) andmarestail (Erigeron canadensis).Corteva Agriscience’s Pioneer brand Qrome productsdeliver optimised packages of top-tier genetics, traits,and seed treatments for higher productivity. Qromeis a “triple stack” product providing trait-enabledprotection to above-ground (Lepidopteran) andbelow-ground (Coleopteran) insects, and herbicidetolerance to glyphosate and glufosinate. Corteva claimsimpressive yield advantages of Qrome products overcompetitive technologies. In 2020, its first year of largevolume availability, 7.7 bushel/acre yield advantageswere recorded.Brazilian company Biotrop’s biofungicide,Bombardeiro, is based on three species ofBacillus bacteria (Bacillus subtilis, B pumilus andB velezensis). The company points to its effectivenessin crop protection by using different actionmechanisms, thereby reducing the occurrence andseverity of diseases. Biotrop says that the product’sbenefits go beyond protection against the principalfungal diseases, including Cercospora kikuchii,Septoria glycines and Corynespora cassiicola, byalso promoting plant growth.Schelkovo Agrohim introduces Mysteria as a “highlyefficient” micro-emulsion fungicide for the protectionof soybeans, sunflowers and sugar beet against arange of diseases. It contains three ais from twopotent chemical classes, strobilurins and triazoles.The synergism and mutually reinforcing effects ofpyraclostrobin, tebuconazole and difenoconazole,ensure a strong protective action, quick curativeeffect and efficient elimination of a broad rangeof phytopathogens.Corteva Agriscience’s “naturally-derived” fungicide,Inatreq (trade-mark name of fenpicoxamid), combatskey diseases in cereals (Zymoseptoria tritici) andbananas (Mycosphaerella fijiensis). A fungicidalnatural compound, UK-2A, is synthetically modifiedto produce Inatreq. In the presence of fungi, Inatreqconverts back to UK-2A. Inatreq is the first member ofa new class of fungicides (picolinamides) providing thefirst new target site of action in wheat and bananas in15 years.ihsmarkit.com/industry/agribusinessUPL presents the insecticide, Blendex (bifenthrin),as an innovative way to control the pests, Naupactusxanthographus and N cervinus. The finalists are:ADAMA’s proprietary Asorbital formulationtechnology combines a unique mix of solvents and abuilt-in adjuvant to create a new carrier technologythat increases the efficacy of prothioconazole-basedfungicides, improves crop yields and opens the wayto reduce environmental impact. The formulationenhances performance of the ai by improving itspenetration into the plant and driving very fastsystemic movement through the plant.Spanish company Atens presents a formulationthat can substantially help to rationalise the use ofagriculture inputs while enhancing soil biodiversityand impacting the sustainability of agroecosystems.It opens the doors to a more targeted bacteriaidentification process using high-end technology,resulting in a new portfolio of highly efficient productsto solve the major concerns that face agriculture. Atenslaunched the first product based on the technology,Bactrium, in March 2021 in Spain.Biotrop presents a biological product based onthe biosynthesis and stabilisation of indoleaceticacid (IAA) for agricultural application. IAA is aphytohormone with pronounced effect on plant growthand increases crop yield. Within this formulation,IAA is obtained through biological pathways. Theactive ingredient, Cerevisane, is an elicitor, acting likea vaccine and favouring the soybean immune system.The preventive fungicide provides high compatibilitywith chemicals and biological products. Its 2020pre-launch has proved a huge success.Brazilian business Biotrops’ Bombardeiro is a multisite biofungicide with an exclusive low-applicationliquid formulation that protects fungicide action. Itis aimed at the soybean market and particularly endof cycle diseases. The winning product will not only be effectivebut also formulated in a way that is acceptable to users and distributors.The finalists are:Spanish business Atens’ Bactrium can substantiallyhelp rationalise the use of inputs while enhancing soilbiodiversity. The company selected two strains ofBacillus megaterium, MHBM06 and MHBM77, whichin association with mycorrhiza facilitate and stimulatemycorrhization. Bactrium’s bacteria colonise soil andthe interaction between the plant, micro-organismsand soil begins, leading to an exchange of signals andnutrients. That results in improvements in productivityand reduction of fertilizers.Brazilian business Biotrop offers Stimutrop basedon the biosynthesis and stabilisation of idol aceticacid (IAA) for agricultural application. This collaborationrepresents a new era in plant breeding – finding plantsthat answer environmental and market demands.Japanese business Nippon Soda and Syngenta teamedup in 2013 to develop a novel solution for the controlof Pythium damping off. The strategic partnership ledto the successful registration of the fungicide, Vayantis(trade-mark name of picarbutrazox), against the diseasein the US and Canada in 2021. It is the first broadspectrum seed treatment product to be launched inmore than 40 years to specifically target Pythium sppand Phytophthora spp.Brazilian businesses Biotrop and Orion have agreedan “unprecedented” partnership. The finalists are:The Bayer Safe Use Ambassador programme is aninnovative multi-stakeholder platform spreadingthe message of safe use of pesticides to millions offarmers and to society. The programme’s core isthe collaboration with universities to train studentsas “ambassadors” on safe use. The multi-sectorcollaboration involving agricultural administration,public health, agribusiness and academia and thestudents’ role as future key influencers sows the seedof safety in the society.Indian company Coromandel International’s uniqueinitiative in India, covering safe and responsiblepesticide use, involves the agricultural universityecosystem of management, scientists, students, andextension networks to reach out to farmers. Theprogramme has reached out to four top universitiesin the country and is contacting to another two.More than 1,000 farmers, 900 students, teaching andresearch staff and management have been a part of thisnational programme.Following the 2018 infestations of fall armyworms(Spodoptera frugiperda), FMC rapidly took theinitiative to build scientific and operational capacityin India to manage the pests through a stewardshipprogramme called Project SAFFAL (SafeguardingAgriculture & Farmers against Fall Armyworm). Theprogramme focused on balancing chemical and nonchemical control measures, controlling the infestation’sspread. The public-private partnership is recognisedas a grassroots-upwards effort, educating more than300,000 farmers and 450 retailers.Aplique Bien is a UPL Mexico stewardship programme.It supports farmers throughout the country bypromoting user safety and effective agrochemicalapplications. The programme trains people in GAPand calibration of spraying equipment and dosagesof pesticides with technical support, improving cropquality and contributing to environmental protectionand food safety. The training is provided to farmers freeof charge. More than 40,000 people have been trained.Corteva Agriscience’s Partners in Custodystewardship strategy, part of the Red de Custodiastewardship network, has been developed andimplemented for distributors of Corteva’s cropprotection products in Colombia. Its central objective isto train partners in good storage practices, emergencymanagement, and the knowledge and applicationof regulations for the operation of their businesses.Through training and inspections, Corteva has reachedmore than 800 collaborators over four years.UPL co-ordinated a stewardship programme inseven south Asian countries in the first two weeks ofJune, 2021.
