Activity ReportMission HealthProject DAYA– Dialysis Assistance Programme - SeminarHELP Foundationconducted a oneday seminar on Homeopathic Management in onducted by Dr.K.P Nandakumar.Col. Dr. Mohan,Chairman of Janasakthi provided the introductory talk. Dr. S.P. Suresh Babu,Dr. Krishnakumar, Members of IHK(Institutionof Homoeopaths Kerala), Patrons & Invitees ofYMCA, HELP Foundation‟s DAYA Programmembers & their care takers took part in thehugely anticipated timely event. We intend to pursue more such programs given the kind of unethi-HELP Foundationcal practices that has been gaining ground withkidney failure patients. This we believe will further augment our intervention in theDialysis arena and the solace we provide to renal patients. In short the outcome of the seminar isif a patient has been diagnosed withrenal failure, there exists provenalternative systems of medicine so thattheir kidney can be resalvaged providedthey don‟t get into a dialysis regimen.Once you are into a dialysis regimenthen the success rate with this form oftreatment becomes less. This is themessage we conveyed across Kollamwith this Seminar and it was wellreceived by patients and their bystanders. Mission GreenSocial InterventionMangrove NurseryWWF State Direction Renjan Mathew visiting our mangrove nurseryHELP Foundation‟s Mangrove Nursery is progressing along well as this should be ready forplanting soon. HELP Foundation‟s MangroveAfforestation Program will be fanning out towardsmorestretchesof Paravur Lake as part ofour ongoing Ecosystem Restoration efforts. The provenmodel which we haveadopted with localadministration, localcommunity and school ecoclubswould be scaled further so asto have more MGNREGAworkers and schools participate in the program. Themost salient aspect of settingup the nursery is that wehave been able to train localHELP Foundationresources in raising the nursery from scratch. Thisshould enable us in future to continue producing saplings of the local species so as to continue ecosystemrestoration activities in and around Paravur Lake.Quarterly JournalJune 2014Vol: V Issue: 1Page No: 4

DhwaniFrom The Editor’s DeskDestructive fishing threatens the Biodiversity of Paravur Lake-Ithikkara River EcosystemCombined with increasing human interventionand pollution, destructive fishing methods aretaking a heavy toll on fisheries resources or ratherthe biodiversity in the Paravur Lake, which continues to support about 600 active fishermen inKollam District. HELP Foundation recently metwith the inland fishermen community at the mergerpoint of Ithikkara River and Paravur Lake as partof its River Watch Program.Certain groups of fishermen using small mesh netswere destroying juveniles in sizeable quantities thatthe futures of varieties such as pearlspots(karimeen) are seriously threatened. HELPFoundations studies conducted earlierhasdocumented that close to 80 percent of the freshwater biodiversity is in peril as some of thecommon varieties which used to be abundant is farand few and can only be spotted in the upperstretches of Ithikkara River.Given the indiscriminate mechanized sand miningthat had happened there is virtually no place forthe fishes to lay eggs as the vegetation on the banksof the water bodies has disappeared, large stretchesof the river banks have caved in. Further fishvarieties such as pearl spots lay eggs at the bottomof the lake, making them particularly vulnerable touse of nets that sweep the bottom.Reports on the Paravur-Ithikkara ecosystem hadpointed out that electrocution; poisoning and useof explosives were common in the Paravur Lake, which is home to over 100 species of fishes andother diverse organisms. The loss of biodiversityhas been reported in other forms as the crab‟s notattaining size as earlier crab‟s species which used toweigh around a kilo is now able to attain only halfthe size. Even mangroves are showing signs ofdecay due to the poisons used. Poisoned fish whichis put in ice immediately so as the bloating stops inno time, fetches huge price in the morning marketfor its freshness. Public health is put at risk as thereis no way to figure out that indeed its poisonedfish. Police interference or rather biased approachat the behest of local level politicians to this illegalactivity has further muddied the whole issue. Thispoisoned fish is a very popular delicacy with thelocal police, according to the fishermen whoengage in such practice. This fondness for suchproduce emboldens them to continue with theillegality.Though these practices appeared confined to thelower stretches of Ithikkara River-Paravur Lakecombine around the Kakkakadavu area, moreHELP Foundationdestructive practices have crept in with people nearThani and Mukkum resorting to practices such aslaying of Toopum Padallum or secured artificialshelters that trap both adults and juveniles. In certain scientific circles it‟s called Bush park (ToopumPadallum) fishing. This acts as a sort of traditionalFish Aggregating Device (FAD), thus virtuallycreating private islands in this water body as well asaffecting seamless navigation and fishing.Kuttivalla or Stake net also known asErrakkamkettu or trapping of fish in the mouth ofthe spillway as Paravur Lake opens up into the Arabian Sea during low tides has been another reasonfor the huge loss of fish wealth. As it‟s mostly thejuveniles who gets caught in this process thusaffecting the reproductive cycle or sustainability ofthe fish wealth. Further the said use of small meshnets and sweeping of the bottom adds to theturbidity, affecting the already perilously declinedfish population. One wonders where thegovernment mechanism is in all of this is and orrather have they ceased to exist.Based on the feedback received from fishermengroups in Kurummandel and Kakkakadavu areason the above issue during HELP Foundations visitto the area as part of its River Watch Program wehave taken up the issue with State BiodiversityBoard and the Deputy Director of FisheriesKollam. The blame game has gone too far and it‟sabout time that all departments of government arebrought on the same page otherwise thebiodiversity of the water body and thus the entireecosystem including human habitat would beaffected irreversibly. Further we have noticed newgeneration service based offices which havecropped up recently, callously route their entireliquid waste into the water bodies. One wondershow licenses and building permits are given tothese mushrooming entities.HELP Foundation hereby proposes the immediateneed for a regulatory regime so as to be able torecover or restore the biodiversity of the ParavurLake-Ithikkara River ecosystem. This calls for allconcerned especially the Police, the Local Gramapanchayat, Fisheries Department, State BiodiversityBoard and Revenue to work together rather than asisolated islands or individual departments. This alsoalludes to the shortfall of government departmentsin working across domains and areas. One wonderswhere is the Environment and Climate Changedepartment in all of this as they are nowhere in thepicture.Quarterly JournalJune 2014Vol: V Issue: 1Page No: 8
