Elevated temperatures (160 F and higher) impose a severe burden on thephysical and mechanical properties of rubberO-rings, which further increases their tendencyto extrude. The combination of high pressures and hightemperatures is a common occurrence inpresent day fluid systems. Moreover, the trendis toward still higher pressures and longer resident times at elevated temperatures. This placesmore emphasis on the role of the back-up ringin preventing O-Ring extrusion.Standard Configurationshere are three basic types of PTFE back-uprings in use: single turn (scarf cut), multiturn (spiral cut), and solid (uncut) configurations.TAnew series of Single Turn Cut Back-UpRings, designated as AS8791/1, has beenadded to this catalog. The AS8791/1 configuration was developed to provide improved fit inthe O-Ring Glands designed to MIL-P-5514 Rev.C, D, E and MIL-G-5514. The M8791/1 SeriesBack-Up Rings have superseded MS28774Back-Up Rings for new design.CoorsTek, Inc.El Segundo Operations2051 East Maple AvenueEl Segundo, CA 90245HTables of these standards and a cross reference to applicable CoorsTek catalog numbersare given in this catalog.Extended Sizesn addition to the military standards, CoorsTeksupplies three series of extended dash sizestandards, which provide back-up rings for allO-Rings in the Aerospace Standard AS568AUniform Numbering System. These configurations, TF74S, TF74C, and TF171 have provenvery useful to fluid systems designers becauseof the added flexibility in size selection. Becauseextended sizes usually are available directly fromthe factory or distributor stocks, industrial usersare assured of the same quality and service thatapplies to the most sophisticated aerospaceapplications.IFilled Back-Up Ringsor applications where sealing systems aresubjected to severe duty cycles, or wherepressures exceed 3,000 psi and temperaturesare above 275 F, filled PTFE back-up rings arevery useful.F 1.310.322.8030 Tel 1.310.640.0312 Faxplasticseals@coorstek.comwww.coorstek.com2 back-upringsPagemetaplast II3 springsealsReference Standard&4 tetracapunilock sealsCoorsTek Standardtetraflex5 pistonsealsPTFE Back-Up RingHeavy Duty Back-Up Ringseavy Duty back-up rings are configured witha greater axial thickness (T) dimension.
