General Information and Connector InformationGeneral Information1. For additional connection information, refer to theowner’s manual(s) for any component(s) connectedto the Wadia a340.2. The Wadia a340 mutes the speaker output for approximately two seconds when first turned on.3. For the best performance and safety it is importantto always match the impedance of the Loudspeakerto the Wadia a340 Power Amplifier Connections (4or 8 ohms). Refer to “How to Connect” pages 8 thru11.Note: The impedance of a Loudspeaker actually varies as the Loudspeaker reproduces differentfrequencies. As a result, the nominal impedancerating of the Loudspeaker (usually measured ata midrange frequency) might not always agreewith the impedance of the Loudspeaker at lowfrequencies where the greatest amount of poweris required. Contact the Loudspeaker Manufacturer for additional information about the actualimpedance of the Loudspeaker before connectingit to the Wadia a340.Connector and Cable InformationCaution: The Loudspeaker Output - NegativeTerminal Connections are not connected tochassis ground. Do not combine any of theLoudspeaker Ouput Terimals ( Positive or- Negative) connections together, groundthem or connect with another amplifier.Output Terminal ConnectorWhen cables with spade lugs are usedfor Loudspeaker Connection, the spadelugs need an opening of at least 3/10 inch(7.6mm).4. In the event the Wadia a340 over heats, due toimproper ventilation and/or high ambient temperature, the protection circuits will activate. The FrontPanel Standby/ON LED will start flashing. Whenthe Wadia a340 has returned to a safe operatingtemperature, normal operation will resume.5. The protection circuits will also activate whenimproper connections are made to the LoudpeakerOutput Terminals.46. When discarding the unit, comply with local rulesor regulations. Batteries should never bethrown away or incinerated but disposedof in accordance with the local regulationsconcerning battery disposal.7. Introduction and Performance FeaturesIntroductionThe Wadia a340 Power Amplifier is one of the finestDigital Power Amplifiers available today. The 400watts output will drive any high quality Loudspeaker. The a340 reproduction is sonically transparent andabsolutely accurate. Custom Binding PostsPatented gold plated output terminals deliver highcurrent output. They accept large diameter wire andspade lugs. Banana plugs may also be used only in theUnited States and Canada.Performance Features LED Front Panel IndicatorA long life Light Emitting Diodes (LED) are used toindicate the operational status of the a315. Adaptive Modulation CircuitryProvides full power output over a wide frequencyresponse range with low distortion. Balanced and Unbalanced InputsBalanced connections allow long cable runs withoutcompromising sound quality. Amplifier and Loudspeaker ProtectionBuilt-in Thermal Protection Circuit guards againstoverheating. The Protection Circuit also actives ifDirect Current is detected at the Output Terminals. Die Cast Aluminium ChassisMaintains cool operating temperatures of the internalcircuitry by the heat dissipating properties of the diecast aluminium chassis. The aluminium chassis withilluminated top glass panel is very durable and willretained its appearance for many years to come. Power SupplyThe a340 Power Amplifier has several regulatedpower supplies, each one extremely stable to ensurenoise free operation even though the power line varies. Trigger Input and Output ConnectionsThe Trigger Input and Output connection providesconvenient Turn-On/Off of additional Power Amplifiers and/or Source Components. Gold Plated ConnectorsThe Input and Output Connector Contacts are goldplated for superior corrosion resistance and high electrical conductivity.5

How to OperateHow to OperatePower On/OffMomentarily press the POWER Push-button to switchthe a340 On or Off. Refer to figure 7.Note: There must be a Trigger ControlConnection between the a340 andthe Audio Preamplifier or SourceDevice, in order for the remotepower turn-on to function.Figure 7Input Mode SwitchThe Input Mode Switch, which is located on the RearPanel of the a340, allows selection ofeither the BALanced or UNBALancedInputs. Refer to figure 9.Figure 9Auto OffThe a340 incorporates a Power Save Feature toautomatically switch power Off to the Power Amplifier approximately 30 minutes after there has been anabsence of an audio input signal.Note: If the Power Save Feature has activated andswitched the a340 Off, the Power Save Feature can be reset by momentarily pressing theSTANDBY/ON Push-button.When there is a Trigger Control Connection between the a340 and a Preamplifier or Source Device, the Power Save Feature in the a340 is bypassed. With the a340 connected (via Trigger Control) toa Preamplifier (Source Device) with the Power SaveFeature and the feature is active, the a340 will switchOff with the Preamplifier (Source Device) after aperiod of inactivity. There may be times when it would be desirable tobypass the Power Save Feature, which by default is active. This can be implemented by placing the “AUTOOFF” Switch, located on the a340 Rear Panel, in theDIS (Disable) position. Refer to figure 8.Figure 815

1 Class-D Audio Amplifier Overview Figure 1 shows the Class-D audio amplifier. This amplifier is a switching amplifier that consists of a pulse width modulator, a power stage, and an output filter. The output of a Class-D amplifier is a PWM (pulse-width-modulation) switched signal with duty cycle that is modulated with audio signal. Compared with

Stereo or twin amplifier operation: Use shielded cables to connect the signal from the preamplifier or signal source to the power amplifier. All connection are made on the back panel of the MC 2300. For stereo operation the LEFT OUTPUT of the pre-amplifier should be connected to the LEFT INPUT of the power amplifier. The RIGHT OUTPUT of the pre-
