PREFACEThis research report presents the results of the 2016 statewide performance tests ofpeanut, cotton, and tobacco. The tests for various evaluations were conducted at severalor all of the following locations: Bainbridge, Tifton, Plains and Midville in the Coastal Plainregion, and Athens in the Piedmont region. For identification of the test site locations,consult the map on the inside of back cover.Agronomic information such as grade, fiber data, plant height, lodging, diseaseoccurrence, etc., is listed along with the yield data. Information concerning planting andharvest dates, soil type, and culture and fertilization practices used in each trial isincluded in footnotes. During 2016, HVI (High Volume Index) cotton fiber samples weresent to Macon, Georgia, for analysis.In order to have a broad base of information, a number of varieties, includingexperimental lines, are included in the trials, but this does not imply that all arerecommended for Georgia. Varieties best suited to a specific area or for a particularpurpose and agreed upon by College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciencesagronomists are presented in the 2017 Spring Planting Schedule for Georgia (availablefrom your county Extension office). Pesticides used for production practices are includedfor the benefit of the reader and do not imply any endorsement or preferential treatmentby the University of Georgia Agricultural Experiment Station. For additional information,contact your local county Extension agent or the nearest experiment station.The least significant difference (LSD) at the 10% level has been included in the tablesto aid in comparing varieties. If the yields' difference of any two varieties exceeds the LSDvalue, they can be considered different in yield ability.This report is one of four publications presenting the 2016 performance of agronomiccrops in Georgia. LaHue, EditorsThe SeasonAs in previous years, Georgia’s agronomic producers faced variable weatherconditions for planting across the state. For much of the state, adequate moisture forspring planting cotton and peanuts was not a concern. Irrigation demands increased asthe growing season progressed for many here in the state. For the first time in threeyears, soil temperatures did not delay spring plantings. Dry weather during the fallallowed for cotton picking to proceed without delay, while peanuts required addedmoisture for digging in some areas.Rainfall amounts recorded monthly at the five test locations in Georgia during the2016 growing season are presented in the following table. Peanut producersplanted 720,000 acres, an 8% decrease from 2015. Cotton producers seeded 1.18million acres in Georgia, a 4% increase over last year. The Georgia state peanut yield per acre in 2016 was 3,940 pounds per acre. This isa 12% reduction in yield from 2015. Georgia peanut producers brought to the marketmore than 2.793 billion pounds of peanuts this year, a decrease of 17% from 2015.Cotton yielded 903 pounds per acre this year, a 6% decrease from last year, and a totalproduction of 2.2 million bales, 2% less than the previous year.
