UNIVERSITY APPLICATIONPROCEDURESYou can only apply through TISC if you’re anAustralian or New Zealand citizen, or you’ve beenapproved or granted Australian permanentresident status. If you’re applying for permanentresidence, you aren’t eligible to apply throughTISC until your permanent residence status hasbeen approved or granted. Contact theInternational Centres of the respective universitiesfor advice.NOTE: If you have a subclass 457 visa, you aren’teligible to apply through TISC, but must applydirect to the International Centre of the relevantuniversity(ies).Residency Status InformationYou must provide correct details of your currentresidency status when you apply. Make sure thatyou’ve read and understood this information sothat your application is correct, reflects what youwant to apply for and gives you the best chance ofreceiving an offer of a place.The 2023 TISC Guide provides more informationabout available courses, guaranteed and minimumselection ranks, applications and offers than isprovided in this publication.As part of your application, you’re asked for detailsof your Year 12 schooling. Answer ‘No’ to part 1 ofthe Secondary School Studies at Year 12 levelquestion, as this applies to WACE students. You’llneed to answer part 2 of the Secondary SchoolStudies at Year 12 level question, to let TISC knowthat you’re doing the IB. Select ‘InternationalBaccalaureate’ from the dropdown list as yourlocation. Also provide your IB personal code (forexample abc123) in the space provided when youanswer this question.Interstate IB studentsIf you are studying the IB Diploma in anotherAustralian state, you are welcome to apply foruniversity in Western Australia through TISC.Simply select ‘International Baccalaureate’ fromthe dropdown list – not your home state – andprovide your IB personal code.Overseas IB studentsIf you are studying the IB Diploma overseas, butmeet the residency requirements to apply throughTISC, you are welcome to apply for university inWestern Australia through TISC.Select ‘International Baccalaureate’ from thedropdown list – not ‘Overseas’ – and provide yourIB personal code.If you completed or are completing the IB Diplomain May of the current year, please indicate this inthe course description to ensure we retrieve yourresults when available in July, as the default for IBresults retrieval is January, when the Novemberresults are released.TISC fees and chargesThere is a flat 80.00 fee to apply through TISC forSemester 1, 2023 admission to WA universities.For courses at Curtin University and Edith CowanUniversity, you need to apply through TISC.If you don’t understand any of the informationprovided, contact TISC or the Admissions Centreat any of the five WA universities.For some courses at Murdoch University and TheUniversity of Western Australia, you can applydirectly to the universities and may not need tocomplete a TISC application. The University ofNotre Dame Australia accepts direct applicationsfor its Year 12 Early Offer Scheme.TISCOnline (www.tisc.edu.au)Changing preferencesApply via TISCOnline. Check details of how toapply in the 2023 TISC Guide or on TISC’swebsite.Once you’ve applied, you can change youruniversity course preferences via TISCOnline asmany times as you like, subject to deadlines.There’s no charge.As an IB student, you need to begin by registeringas a new user on TISC’s site. This will generateyour User ID, which you then use to apply. Youchoose your own password. This procedure isdifferent from that followed by WACE students.3Final closing dates will be published on the TISCwebsite. Generally, you will have at least a fewdays to change preferences once you havereceived your final IB results.
IB RESULTSYou don’t need to submit your 2022 IB results toTISC. We can obtain these electronically directfrom the IBO. However, so that we can accessyour results, you must arrange through yourschool in advance for your results to be madeavailable to TISC. See the IB co-ordinator in yourschool to ensure a Results Request is submittedvia the IB on your behalf.If you don’t release your results to TISC prior tothe IB results release day, additional fees mayapply for the IBO to release your results to TISC,and it may cause delays with processing yourapplication.“You also need to supply TISCwith your IB personal code, tomake sure we can retrieve theresults.”November IB results will not be available to TISCand the universities in time to be included in theDecember round of offers, but the universitiesexpect to have places available in all courses forthe January round of offers, so that IB students willnot be disadvantaged. Depending on the universityand course for which you are applying, you maybe eligible for an early offer based on predictedresults – check with the university directly. If this isthe case, you need to upload evidence ofpredicted results to your TISC application for themto be considered.You can’t view your IB results via the TISC website– you will need to contact IB or your school if youhave any concerns about your results.“If you are a student studying IB2. achieve competence in English asprescribed by the individual universities (seeTable 1); and3. obtain an IB Admissions Score that convertsto a sufficiently high equivalent CombinedRank (see Table 2, 3 and 4) for entry to aparticular university and/or course; and4. satisfy any prerequisites (see Table 5) orspecial requirements necessary to beconsidered for entry to particular courses.Non-completion of DiplomaGenerally, IB students need to be awarded the IBDiploma to be admitted to university in WesternAustralia through standard entry pathways.However, if you do not meet all the requirementsto be awarded the IB Diploma, you may be eligiblefor alternative pathways to entry. Check the 2023TISC Guide for more information, or contact theuniversities directly for advice.COMPETENCE IN ENGLISHThe following table is a guide to achievingcompetence in English for university entrance inWestern Australia. Murdoch University also accepts the completion oftwo years of senior secondary study (Year 11and 12) in Australia to satisfy English Languagecompetence requirements, regardless of individualsubject results. If you are completing the IBoverseas, you should check with MurdochUniversity what results you require.COMBINED RANKSThe Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) isthe basis of admission to most university courses.Applicants are ranked in order of merit based ontheir ATAR. All states in Australia calculate anATAR for eligible students studying their statebased senior secondary certificate (in WA, theWACE).Students studying the IB Diploma are given an IBscore by the IBO, in whole numbers up to amaximum of 45.So that the universities can rank IB students onthe same basis as other Australian Year 12students, TISC uses a combined conversion tableprepared annually by the Australasian Conferenceof Tertiary Admission Centres (ACTAC) to convertIB scores to Combined Ranks. This table is usedby all states. For background on how this table isconstructed see ‘Admission Requirements –International Baccalaureate and Interstate Students’on TISC’s website. An extract from the table to beused for 2023 admissions follows.Table 2: IB Diploma score to Combined Rank52022 IBDiplomaScoreCombinedRank forentry in20232022 IBDiplomaScoreCombinedRank forentry .602470.20INTERNATIONALBACCALAUREATE ADMISSIONSSCOREFor 2023 admission, the Australasian Conferenceof Tertiary Admissions Centres (ACTAC), whichincludes TISC, is introducing a new conversionmechanism to help convert IB scores moreprecisely to ATAR equivalents.ATARs are allocated on bands at 0.05 intervals(for example, 99.95, 99.90, 99.85 and so on),while IB scores are only reported at whole numberintervals (45, 44, 43 and so on). This means the IBscore is a “coarse” comparison measure, withrelatively few data points.For Australian-based IB students, the IBO willprovide ACTAC with finer-grained data about yourperformance in each subject, in addition to the IBscore so that a more precise conversion ispossible.ACTAC will use this data to assign anInternational Baccalaureate Admissions Score(IBAS) which will then be used with the conversiontable to generate a Combined Rank.How is my IBAS calculated?This more detailed information allows us todetermine where your mark falls within the grade.For example, if the boundaries for Grade 6 inChemistry HL are marks between 60 and 69, andyour mark is 68, we can determine that yourposition within that grade is high. We will do thisfor every subject and calculate an average positionfrom across your six subjects. The result will thenbe rounded using intervals of 0.25. This finalnumber will be your IB Admissions Score.The IBAS adds more detail within each level ofdiploma scores but does not change the score.The IBAS will always start with the same numberas your IB Diploma score. For example, if youhave a diploma score of 35, your IB AdmissionsScore will be 35.xx. It will not be 36.25 or 34.75.Table 3 shows how your IBAS will then beconverted to a Combined Rank.Students completing the IB overseas, even if theyare Australian citizens/residents, will not receivean IBAS. The IB Diploma score to Combined Ranktable will apply to these students (see Table 2).

This is in recognition of completion oflanguage and mathematics subjects. Inmany cases, applicants without prerequisites won’tbe admitted. In some cases, bridging courses maybe available, but this could extend the length of thecourse. Contact the individual university(ies) forfurther information on courses you’re interested in.

Remember,though, that the actual offer you receive willdepend on your preference order. GuaranteedATARs/Selection Ranks are included with theCourse Codes for 2023 Admission in the TISCGuide and also on TISC’s website. Some courseshave no Guaranteed ATAR/Selection Rank listed,as they use additional selection criteria (such asUCAT, audition or interview) and/or have limitedplaces available.Minimum ATARs/Selection Ranks have also beenprovided by the universities for most of theircourses. Minimum ATARs/Selection Ranks showyou the rank needed to be considered for entry toa course. However, obtaining these ranks is not aguarantee of being selected for a place in thesecourses. Some courses will have N/A for theminimum ATAR/Selection Rank, where anATAR/Selection Rank is not applicable due toemphasis on other eligibility criteria.Check these Guaranteed and MinimumATARs/Selection Ranks against the conversiontables in this document to give you an idea of theIB score you may need to obtain in order toreceive an offer in the course of your choice.
