Building Skills and RelationshipsWeekly lessons are the backbone of Second Step Middle School and foundational to developingstudents’ social-emotional skills. Building on that foundation, Second Step Middle School advisoryactivities help nurture the sense of school community and close-knit relationships necessary forstudents’ success and well-being while reinforcing lesson concepts and giving students moreopportunities to practice their new skills. There are four different advisory activity types, each designedto meet these goals.Weekly Check-Ins and Check-OutsGive students the support they need with Weekly Check-Ins and Check-Outs. Held at thebeginning and end of the week, these quick meetings let students reconnect, reflect, andcheck their progress toward individual and group goals. They also give teachers a chance tohelp students with individual issues. Second Step Middle School includes templates for boththe Check-In and Check-Out meetings, which can be customized to meet the needs of eachclassroom or group.Class ChallengesThese fun, engaging, and thought-provoking activities are designed to help students get toknow their classmates and build strong bonds over time. Class Challenges touch on themessuch as growth mindset, planning ahead, and helping others, and each Class Challenge can beused in tandem with Second Step Middle School lessons or as a stand-alone activity. ClassChallenges are great for providing additional skill practice, too.Class MeetingsBuild rapport between students in your advisory program with these guided group discussionson topics such as values, handling emotions, and relationships. With each meeting, studentsare given a safe space to explore and apply the Second Step skills and concepts they’relearning to social and academic situations. Everyone—including the teacher or advisor—isencouraged to participate actively, and full discussion outlines with reflection questionsare included.Service-Learning ProjectsStudents can make a difference in their school and community through these student-drivengroup projects. Working together, they plan their project, take on project roles, make groupdecisions, and complete and present their project.
