Special EventsFrom theLibraryDirectorH5ere comes 2020! I’m excited forwhat sounds like a year filled with clarityand vision. Undoubtedly, there will bemoments to celebrate over the nexttwo months as one year closes andanother one begins. In January, the librarywill cheer for the one year anniversaryof our successful bookmobile service.Sometimes I want to freeze time so thatI can fully appreciate and enjoy thesemoments.Practicing mindfulness can be challengingno matter the time of year, but it is especially difficult when we’re busy shopping, cooking, socializing, and starting a newyear. Of course, spending time with familyand friends should be a priority, butdon’t forget to do something special foryourself.I’m proud of the library program andservice offerings in December andJanuary. There will be many ways tospend time with the people we careabout – how about meeting your friendsfor a library screening of the movieDownton Abbey? Or maybe find sometime to join our collaborative experiences/hands-on classes amid the hullabalooof the holidays? No matter how youchoose to stay connected this winter, look for some great programs throughout this year.8159ContentsSpecial Events . 3Adult Programs .4-5Book and Poetry Clubs . 42In conjunction with the annual Welcoming Week initiative, the September Issues That Matter Serieshighlighted a local refugee. The “Ask a Refugee” program featured an amazing speaker, Felicien.Felicien is originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but he left at age 11 due to war andpersecution, and traveled to Angola, and then on to Zambia, where he was in a refugee camp from1997-2015. He shared with us his inspiring story of the life-threatening experiences in the Congo, challenges of life in a refugee camp, and the five-year vetting process to emigrate. Among his many skills,Felicien speaks seven languages including Swahili and English, and served as an interpreter while inthe camp. Now residing in Largo with his family, Felicien holds down two jobs, actively gives back tothe community, and helps to serve and support others. We were honored to have Felicien here toshare his story.Together We Are Sew Powerful!ideaLAB and eResources . 8Teen Scene . 9Children’s Programs . 10-11L I B R A R Y@LPLnewsa RefugeeGallery 120 . 8Greater Largo Library Foundation .15@LargoPublicLibraryAskDigital Learning .7Friends of the Largo Library .14@LargoPublicLibraryLibrary In Your Neighborhood: Largo Library BookmobileOne Year Anniversary CelebrationMon Jan 13 2pmThe Bookmobile has completed its first year on the road.Come visit us in the front of the library as we celebrate thismilestone. Inthis organization we, as a group, have ourroles and work together to invent projectsand ideas to help with anything that mayneed attention in our community. My rolein the council is the historian, which is tokeep a collection of photos, writing piecesby teens, and organizations that havecome to help in the past and are willing tohelp again with events that are related toteens. I proposed an idea for a project tomake a Teen Volunteer Yearbook which isreally exciting for the library.Being asked to help with WelcomingWeek and raise money for donationbaskets for refugees that have come toAmerica with almost nothing, and frommany different countries, that are goingthrough all different kinds of problems, made me think “can I as a teen volunteertruly make a difference for such a bigproblem?” At first my expectations to sitat a table, ask for donations, and actuallyreceive money from our patrons were verylow. When we started tabling I realizedthat there are people who do care and arewilling to sacrifice a few dollars that theyworked hard for to help refugees fromcountries they don’t even know how topronounce. It’s absolutely moving.I also encourage you to inform us if youhave a small company that may help thelibrary in some way.Bad Art DayThu Dec 12 3pm-5pmCome by and create the worst, mostridiculous art you can imagine.
