VOCALPERFORMANCE“We assist singers to find their truest voice,developing skills to help you achieve your highestand best goals.”David JoyceVocal Department HeadDavid Joyce is a singer/keyboard player/songwriter whohas worked with the likes of Chris Isaak, Burt Bacharach,U2, Neil Young, Oasis, Natalie Cole, Elvis Costello, DionneWarwick, Sheryl Crow,Ray Charles, Babyface, MichaelJackson, David Byrne, Richard Marx, Tim McGraw, WynonnaJudd, Frank Sinatra, Vince Gill, and Barry Manilow. He hasplayed and sung on many television shows, includingAmerican Dreams, Passions, Carmen San Diego, Savedby the Bell, Days of Our Lives, and The Tonight Show.Some of the films he has sung on have included The Daythe Earth Stood Still, The Watchmen, Wanted, HortonHears a Who, I Am Legend, Spiderman 3, The SimpsonsMovie, World Trade Center, Superman Returns, King Kong,Matrix 2 & 3, There’s Something About Mary, Sixth Sense,Snow Falling on Cedars, Big, Face Off, and Contact. Davidhas written songs for and produced a number of youngartists in the Los Angeles area and has scored severalPBS documentaries and a number of AFI films. Davidreceived his Masters in Jazz (voice) from USC and his B.M.in Composition from CSUN. He has been leading vocal/arranging seminars in Italy every summer since 2005 andhas taught at both USC and Pasadena City College. In1986, David was a Grammy Award winner in the categoryof Best Jazz Vocal Group with Clare Fischer’s 2 2 Plus.

Academic Programs 89LEARNING OUTCOMES &OBJECTIVESThe Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance is aprofessional degree designed for students wishing topursue a career in the music industry. Graduates ofthis program are qualified musicians who are ready tocompete as leaders in the competitive and ever-changinglandscape of the music industry.Upon completion of the Bachelor of Music program inVocal Performance, students will:1. Sing with appropriate style, phrasing, and intonationin a variety of genres (Rock, Roots, Jazz, Gospel, R&B/Funk, Brazilian and others, both Contemporary as well asTraditional)2. Sing in a large variety of ensembles, in a large varietyof genres, sizes and instrumentation including: WorldMusic and Jazz Vocal groups, combos, Big Band,original projects with fellow students, as well as groupscomprised of professional musicians3. Compose songs and arrange for various ensembles, andlearn to lead these groups4. Sing with healthy vocal technique – truly applying theirtheoretical understanding of relaxed support and breathcontrol, so they can sing in various styles, and in variousranges. Theory is applied through the students’ dailypractice routines, and through weekly private lessonswith top-level professional singing teachers5. Have developed keyboard and music theory skills,necessary for writing, arranging and performing originalcompositions and compositions of others with goodfacility6. Apply all of their skills and talents toward live and studioexperiences, with the aim of cultivation of true artistry7.
