Patient-Centered inthe Puget SoundSWEDISH EDMONDS AMBULATORY CARE CENTEREdmonds, WashingtonFounded in 1908, Swedish Health Services—now part of thebroader Providence Health & Services—is the largest nonprofithealthcare provider in the greater Seattle area, operating fivehospitals in the region. By the 21st century, Swedish Edmonds(formerly the community district hospital, Stevens Hospital)outgrew its aging buildings designed in the 1970s and ’80s. Thecampus needed an expansion to provide areas for critical medicalcare, as well as improve patient flow and wayfinding and create afront door to the campus. The resulting Ambulatory Care Center incorporates the latest inefficiency planning and pulls inspiration from the surroundinggeography while referencing the region’s historic roots.

VISIONVALUEIn breaking with the older part of the hospitalThe new addition provides streamlined spacescampus, Swedish Edmonds envisioned anfor care teams, staff and patients. The designAmbulatory Care Center that would serveprioritizes efficient throughput. By providingas a welcoming sanctuary—open and light-clarity in design, Swedish Edmonds hasfilled—to put patients and their families atincreased productivity and lowered health careease as well as give physicians and staff acosts, while improving its regional positioning.well-organized workplace.

Ambulatory Care Circulation,Streamlined and SeparatedHaving outgrown their emergency department, Swedish Edmonds needed a critical facilitiesupgrade that would provide much needed space and a refresh. Medical planning for theAmbulatory Care Center incorporated an array of techniques to maximize efficiency, as well asincrease visibility and wayfinding for both patients and caregivers.Circulation is differentiated between onstage (patients, family and care team) and offstage (careteam). There are separate entrances for the emergency department, lobby and ambulances, to helpstreamline patient care and assessment. The Emergency Department serves as a new front door to the Swedish Edmonds campus. A portionof the old Emergency Department is now the Observation Unit. The new Emergency Department entrance brings clear, visiblesignage and a more welcoming, direct approach to SwedishEdmonds’ hospital patients and their families.MAIN ENTRANCEED ENTRANCEOffstage1EXISTING HOSPITALOnstage3Mixed363 Old Emergency Department254OLD ED ENTRANCEAMBULANCEENTRANCE1LOBBY2EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT3WAITING AREA4IMAGING5SHORT-STAY OBSERVATION UNIT6SHELL SPACE

Space Planning for Efficient CareGPatient volume analyses provided a foundation for the project team to create separate tracks forpatients depending on their acuity of healthcare needs. To ensure there is the right room for the rightpatient, medical care spaces are gradated in acuity, from low, to medium, to high.LOWACUITYHIGHACUITYBBBEBAGEXISTING HOSPITALFBCHDAMBULANCEENTRANCEATRAUMA ROOMSBEXAM ROOMSCRAPID MEDICALEVALUATION ROOMDBEHAVIORALHEALTHESHORT-STAYOBSERVATION UNITFCARE TEAM STATIONGINTERNAL LOBBYHSWING ROOMSA The Level IV Trauma Center providesease of access for caregivers evaluatingand treating high-acuity patients. Highacuity spaces are located closer to theEmergency Department’s ambulanceentrance, while lower-acuity areas arelocated near the front lobby, helpingincrease patient throughput. The open care team station (above right)and a dedicated area for behavioral health(below right) allow for more efficientcommunication between health providersand patients. These areas serve as centralhubs for emergency care.D

A Transformed Patient ExperienceThe waiting area and lobby connects the old hospital to the new in awelcoming, warm way. Extensive windows, high ceilings and skylights bringin calming natural light. Lighting elements in the lobby reference the PacificNorthwest’s carved glacial beginnings while wood features—including tenlaser-etched woodcuts drawn from historic photographs provided by Edmonds’historical museum—also celebrate the region’s past and serve as a point ofcommunity connection and discovery.

Local Materials, LocalConnectionsThroughout the building, design features honor Edmonds’ logging past, giving the campus a local identity that respects the heritage of thesurrounding region while looking towards the future. The lobby (right) houses boom logs salvaged by a tugboat captain, boomlog collector and former marine biologist. Striated metal panels make up the façade of the building, inspired by sedimentary layers formed during the region’sglacial past. These standardized panels not only kept costsdown, but also created a bold façade and canopy. Landscape architecture firm SiteWorkshop incorporated salvaged wood from the site to create forms inspired by the shingle mills of Edmond’s past.

The Swedish model may be challenged on two key points: 1 The Swedish model has failed in its aim to decrease levels of sex work in Sweden. 2 The Swedish model has resulted in increased difficulties and danger associated with sex work.
