Bill is in a nursinghome in Mount Pleasant, following astroke earlier this year. Brother Normand also commented on Dr. Leazer’s report to the Southern BaptistConvention some 15 years ago. Theconvention’s Christian Life Committee report regarding the Masonic fraternity report was favorable to Baptist men having the choice of joiningthe Masonic fraternity. However, thereport was basically gutted and Dr.Leazer eventually was forced out ofhis position with the SBC. So impressed was Dr. Leazer with the menhe met while preparing the report,he became a Mason and has servedas worshipful master of the lodge inStone Mountain, Ga.It was announced that therewould be a pre-lunch-hour tutorialsession with members of the Editorial Committee and TransactionsEditor for those interested in gettingstarted on their first-time researchpaper. With peace and harmony prevailing, Worshipful Master Pro TemBradly closed the lodge at 11 am.Following an outstanding barbecue lunch arranged by Bro. TLR website From the SecretarychangesBy Jim Dougherty, PM, Occasional Bulletin EditorThere has been some confusion recently about the correctlocation for the Texas Lodgeof Research website. The correct website location is www.texaslodgeofresearch.org.Webmaster Pete Martinez, PM,is working to rid us of the twoobsolete locations which appear when one “Googles” TLR.The new website allowsmembers and the general public to access information onlodge activities more efficiently, according to WebmasterMartinez.MOVING?Please save yourlodge unnecessarypostage and printingcosts by reportingany changes of address.Transactions Vol. XLIwas mailed the lastweek in March. Ifyou didn’t receiveyours, please e-mailthe secretary.7Wow, it’s been quite a summerso far. Hundred-plus degree temperatures and little or no rain forwhat seems to be months. Well, aslong as the air conditioning continues to chug along, so will yoursecretary and his dutiful assistant, Chubs, the pug grand-dog.One of the highlights of thepast months has been the ongoingwork of the TLR Editorial Committee, reported on elsewhere in theOccasional Bulletin. It was my honor as a pastmember of the committee to havebeen asked to sit in on their deliberations via e-mail and several eye-ball-to-eyeball meetingsat quarterly sessions and here inAustin. In Austin, we were theluncheon guests of Mrs. MaryMazurek, administrator of theScottish Rite Dormitory. With thekind permission of Past GrandMaster and former Anson JonesLecturer Judge Jack Hightower,we were afforded access to theSRD board president’s conferenceroom, where the air conditioningwas doing its job above and beyond the call of duty.If you have a female memberof your family heading to the University of Texas in a few years, shecouldn’t find a better residencethan the SRD.To say that crafting the newmanual was a daunting job is agiven. Early on, it was discoveredthat the former Criteria and StyleSheet, so beautifully done by Fellow in Masonic Research Dr. William Preston Vaughn, was beinggiven to prospective authors ina couple of versions. The printedbooklet we had in the secretary’soffice was not the newer versionbeing offered on the TLR website. The committee, made up of H.C.Arbuckle III, Raymond Bronk, PGMDavid Dibrell, and myself, had thetask of taking Dr. Vaughn’s structure and incorporating grammati-cal and stylechangestomeet today’sstandards ofaccepted use.The members of thecommitteeare a strongwilled lot, andthereweremore than afew disagreements alongJim Doughertythe way. But,Secretaryin the end, thedocumentisone that should serve the lodgefor many years to come. One of the recommendationsthe committee made that is not directly contained in the Form andStyle Manual involves the submission of papers by an author.Beginning immediately, papers are to be sent to the TLRaddress (P.O. Box 684684,Austin, TX 78768-4684.)Authors are to submit a printed draft along with a digital file onCD. The secretary will, upon receipt, log in the paper, stamp theprinted draft with a “Received”date stamp and pass it to the senior warden for distribution to thecommittee. Everything else staysthe same. This added step at thebeginning of the process is to assure that papers are accountedfor throughout the editorial process. It’s great that the committee isholding forums at quarterly meetings to encourage first-time authors to contribute to the wealthof Masonic knowledge that fills 41volumes of Proceedings of TexasLodge of Research. The Form and Style Manualis available in PDF format anddownloadable at TLR’s website:www.texaslodgeofresearch.org.
