PART NO. 1Basic TermsYou Needto KnowCREATIVE MARKET PARTNER GUIDE

02Affiliate marketing can be a relatively easy way to make money in thedigital world while supporting entrepreneurs and independent creativeprofessionals at the same time. You get to share awesome productsand services while getting a cut of every sale that resulted from yourreferrals. In the Creative Market Partner Program, you’ll make moneyby spreading the word about the millions of design assets availablefrom independent shop owners around the world. Let’s get startedwith some essential terms that you will run into throughout this guide.Affiliate Marketingthrough affiliate links placed on websites, blogs, social media posts and even videos.Affiliate marketing leads the list of waysto earn money online. It’s a simple systemin which you share products and servicescreated by other people:➊As an affiliate, you get links froma brand.➋You proceed to share those links withpotential buyers.➌Those buyers click on your unique linkand buy from the seller.➍The seller shares a cut of thattransaction with you. When someone buys the product throughyour marketing efforts, you get a commissionfrom the brand. In this model, both partiesbenefit - the brand gets marketing help and amuch broader exposure to potentialcustomers, and the affiliate makes moneyevery time a customer buys the productCREATIVE MARKET PARTNER GUIDE

03The Creative MarketRevenue SharingAffiliate ProgramIn all its forms, affiliate marketing operates onthe principle of revenue sharing - a relationship between a seller (also called a vendor ormerchant) who has a product to market, andthe affiliates who undertake the job of sharingthat product with the world. When a sale ismade, the seller collects the purchase price, and a percentage of that price goes to theaffiliate in the form of a commission. In thatway, revenue from the sale of the product isshared by both parties. The harder affiliateswork to promote the product, the more moneythey earn. You can become an affiliate and start sharingdesign products by signing up to the CreativeMarket Affiliate Program. The Affiliate Programoffers opportunities for earning a commissionon any single purchase from all customersreferred to Creative Market for 30 days.Affiliate marketing commissions can vary, andso can the time frame in which a sale needs tobe completed. In the Creative Market Partner Program, referrals last for 30 days, so that partners canearn money on both new and return customerpurchases. The commission earned on eachof those purchases is a consistent 10 percentof the purchase amount. To join the Partner Program, you’ll need toprovide a website address and briefly explainwhy you’d like to become a partner. You cansubmit this information at creativemarket.com/partners.The promotion strategies you choose areentirely up to you. Typical approaches caninclude writing reviews on blogs, postingto social media sites like Facebook, ormaking videos or podcasts on related topics.Whatever channels you decide to use, though,it’s important to understand the buildingblocks of a successful affiliate marketingstrategy: revenue sharing, attribution, cookies, and link building. The revenue sharing model benefits brands, too. Affiliates help a company’s marketingefforts by sharing products with a relevantaudience that the brand may otherwise beunable to reach. To make their job easier,Creative Market offers its partners resourceslike this guide, among other tools that we willlook at farther along. For affiliates, the benefits of revenue sharinginclude the potential to earn more, the morethey market, with no real cap on that amountas long as there’s demand for the product.Affiliates can choose to supplement otherincome with a few hundred dollars here andthere from promoting one or two products, orbecome entrepreneurs who build a businessout of marketing several lines of productsthrough a variety of different channels. Onlinetools put these options within the reach of justabout anyone with basic Internet skills.CREATIVE MARKET PARTNER GUIDE

04AttributionAffiliates are paid by commission, but that commission is determined by the seller of the productthey’re marketing. A marketing process called attribution plays a major role in determining thevalue of each component of a marketing plan, and that can include commissions paid to affiliates.Attribution analyzes all the touchpoints on a consumer’s journey from first contact with a productall the way to purchase.CookiesIn order to track how consumers contact and interact with products promoted by affiliates, sellerstypically use cookies: a bit of code stored on a visitor’s computer after they visit a website. Cookiescan confirm whether the visitor made a purchase through the affiliate’s link. If that happens, theaffiliate receives the commission.➊The buyer follows your link to Creative Market.➋Creative Market creates and stores a cookie in the buyer’s PC for 365days, unless cleared by the buyer.➌When the buyer visits the site, Creative Market checks for the cookie andidentifies him as your referral. After this buyer signs up, your cut of everypurchase he/she makes for a full year will be attributed to you.Cookies may have a very limited lifespan of hours or days or they can last months or even years. Inthe Creative Market Partner Program, you’ll get a full year for the referred user to sign up and becomea referred customer. After they sign up, we stop relaying the cookie and you will start earning thecorresponding cut of sales. If your referred customer was to sign up on day 364 after the cookie wasplaced, you will still get attribution for that referral.CREATIVE MARKET PARTNER GUIDE

05Referral LinksLinks are the linchpin of affiliate marketing success. Placing and managing the links that take avisitor to a website play a major role in securing sales and getting commissions. When affiliatesenter a direct relationship with a seller or with a network, they typically receive an affiliate link, which is a unique link that confirms the sale and triggers a payout.Links can be used in a variety of ways to attract attention and encourage clicks. Affiliate links canbe inserted into blog posts and web pages as anchor text - highlighted text with an insertedhyperlink (in this case, the affiliate link) - that opens the target web page when the text is clicked. Here’s what anchor text looks like:Links can also appear as clickable URLs on alanding page - a standalone web page usedBlog post text. Check out the “About LinkShorteners” section below for more information on using these tools to your advantage.Blog Post TitleAffiliate links can appear everywhere a product is being marketed, but these links may not performequally well. Since the success of an affiliate marketing effort depends on how many links lead tosales, it can be helpful to track which links are getting results and which aren’t.The Affiliate FunnelMarketers frequently speak of the “sales funnel,” the process of capturing viewers’ interest with aneasy-to-access product and leading them into a deeper connection that results not only in a salebut also a long-standing relationship with a brand or company. The “affiliate funnel” is a variationon this model that reflects steps in the affiliate marketing process, and the stages of this funnelreveal steps affiliates can take to increase sales.CREATIVE MARKET PARTNER GUIDE

06The affiliate funnel opens with a “lead capture,” which is a free offer of some kind that’s relatedto the product being marketed. That captures visitors’ email addresses, a key tool for building anemail list for keeping in contact with visitors and customers. From there, visitors can be directedto pages featuring the product being marketed and thence to a landing page or other purchasingoptions. This far into the funnel, marketing efforts can continue with an “up-sell,” an offer of otherrelevant products and services customers might be interested in.Each point in the affiliate funnel represents a touch point in the buying process. Armed with thisdata, it’s possible to make changes in content and presentation in order to increase conversions also known as sales.Let’s take a look at what this affiliate funnel looks like in the Creative Market Partner Program. Aspotential buyers go from viewing to clicking to signing up and then purchasing, their numbersdecrease — and that’s why funnels become narrow as you move towards the end.IN THE FUNNEL TO THE LEFT:CREATIVE MARKET PARTNER GUIDE Partner links are the unique URLswe described in the previous section. Referred customers are those whoeffectively sign up for a CreativeMarket account after following yourlinks. 13FIGURING OUT WHAT TO SHAREUnderstanding your audience is the key tofiguring out which products to share. Thinkcreatively when trying to find new audiences- a tattoo artist might be looking for new fonts,or a fashion blogger might welcome a set ofwatercolor brushes. Visit forums and socialsites frequented by your target audience andbrowse comments and questions for ideas. We will look at buyer personas and marketingchannels closely in Part III of this guide.Creating an affiliated URL is reallyeasy, either by tagging on my partner code at the end of the link, orCopy/Pasting the convenient shorturls for each product. What startedas a few extra dollars here & therehas grown to become a really goodstream of passive income!– CHRIS SPOONER, SHOP OWNER/PARTNERFollowing GuidelinesAlong with the “do’s” of becoming asuccessful partner in the Partner Program, there are also a few “don’ts” to observein order to avoid bad practices that couldcompromise your affiliate marketing plans andaffect your online reputation.Successful affiliate marketing dependson observing the rules and expectationsestablished by the seller whose products arebeing promoted. Productive marketing alsorelies, in key ways, on cooperating with searchengines such as Google and their constantlyevolving standards for quality content. This also means becoming familiar with andfollowing Creative Market’s Site and PartnerTerms, found at creativemarket.com/terms.You can stay up to date on best practicesand guidelines via our Help Center (support.creativemarket.com) and at our blog. Youshould also be sure to understand the FTC’sEndorsement Guidelines and how they applyto affiliate marketers.Google, in particular, is not supportive ofsomething the company has called “thinaffiliates”. Thin affiliates fail at providing valuefor users, either by copying content from theseller word-by-word or hosting their linksin sites that are void of engaging, originalcontent. What this means for you is you willwant to have a good mix of affiliate links andcreative content if posting affiliate links onyour website or blog. Also avoid direct republishing, and try to paraphrase the productdescriptions that you find so that your site’scontent remains unique. In sharing the word about Creative Market aswidely as possible, search engines expectcontent to be original. Content syndication,in which the content you create related to aproduct or service is distributed to multiplechannels in its original form, can be perceivedas duplicate content by search engines. Andsince search engine algorithms aim to weedout spammy, keyword-stuffed content thatcompromises the quality of user experienceson the web, posting affiliate content thatviolates these standards can compromise yourreputation and affect your status as an affiliate.CREATIVE MARKET PARTNER GUIDE

PART NO. 3GrowingYour IncomeCREATIVE MARKET PARTNER GUIDE

18Affiliate marketing remains one of the easiest ways to earn passiveincome online, but establishing and growing an affiliate marketingplatform requires some planning, research and attention to the “do’s”and “don’ts” of sharing your affiliate links with the world. If you’re a newpartner in the Creative Market Partner Program, defining your audience, creating your brand and using your marketing channels effectively canhelp you expand your reach and grow your income.Defining YourAudienceIn affiliate marketing, the key to conversions,or sales, lies in reaching a target audienceof people willing to buy the product orservice you’re marketing - and in general, thenarrower the audience, the better your sales. With that in mind, begin developing youraffiliate platform by researching your targetaudience.RESEARCHING THE NICHETake time to explore the niche occupiedby your link source - the company or brandthat generates the affiliate link you’ll use togenerate and track your sales. As a partner inthe Creative Market Partner Program, your linkis generated by Creative Market in order topay your commission on referrals you make tothe marketplace.Review the Creative Market website andexplore the products and services offeredhere. Note how shop owners describethemselves and what needs are beingserved by their products. An overview of theCreative Market site can reveal fairly detailedinformation about our audience based onfeatured shops, product categories, andeven comments and questions on how theseassets are used. This information can helpyou decide which types of products you wantto promote and who might be interested inbuying them.CREATING A BUYER PERSONATo help you figure out your target audience, marketing experts often recommend takingtime to develop a clicker, or buyer, persona- a “model” of the ideal user of the productyou’re marketing. You can find demographicand lifestyle information by analyzing who’stalking about your topic on social mediaand in forums. You can also search forkeywords relevant to your niche, and figureout what type of content other sites arealready creating for that audience. Using theinformation you’ve gathered, create yourbuyer persona. Be fairly specific, since thispersona can also help guide you as youdevelop the content that you’ll use to promoteproducts. Try to develop an understandingCREATIVE MARKET PARTNER GUIDE

19of your buyer’s needs - what problems do they want to solve? What frustrates them about currentproducts they use? What information would help them to make better use of specific products?Once you have a reasonable understanding of your audience and what they’re looking for, you’llbe able to build a marketing platform with authority and credibility. To do that, you’ll need to makesure your online presence has a professional look and feel across all channels.Creating Your BrandThe goal of affiliate marketing is to make money, so it’s important to develop your platform withbusiness in mind. The key parts of your platform - your website, your email list and the otherchannels you decide to use for marketing purposes - should reflect your identity, or brand, in acoherent way.Your affiliate marketing “brand” reflects the look and feel of the products you’re promoting andthe audience you’re hoping to reach, so choose a style and color scheme that can be incorporatedacross all your marketing channels for an instantly recognizable and visually coherent look.Logos and avatars act as a kind of visual shorthand to convey your brand at a glance. Design yoursfor easy recognition anywhere your marketing content appears, and make sure they fit well withyour overall brand identity.CREATIVE MARKET PARTNER GUIDE

20Selecting YourMarketing ChannelsA key part of developing an effective affiliatemarketing platform is to establish thechannels that you’ll use to promote products. These are defined by your marketing nicheand your audience, as well as by your owninterests and expertise - you might loveblogging but hate video, or vice versa. The cornerstones of a robust marketingplatform include a website or blog, an emaillist, and at least a few of the major socialsharing networks. These are the tools thatwill place your affiliate link in front of potentialcustomers - and your sales depend onmanaging how, and where, that link appears. In principle, affiliate marketing works on asimple model. You sign up as an affiliateto promote products and services createdby someone else and get a link that, whenclicked, makes a sale and gets you acommission. But to do that, your affiliatelink has to be accessible, trustworthy, andclickable across all the channels you use.WEBSITE OR BLOGAlthough it’s possible to conduct affiliatemarketing without a website, having an onlinehome for your marketing enterprise createstrust and authority and allows you to structureyour site in a way that best suits your niche. The most effective way to place your affiliatelink on your site or blog is to attach it to apiece of relevant and useful content, such asa review of a product or service, a profile, or aresource list. Create a hyperlink by highlighting relevant text and selecting the hyperlinkoption in your text editor. Paste your affiliatelink into the link box and accept the change. When a visitor clicks the text, your link isactivated, enabling them to buy the product.Affiliate links can also be added to images, added to slides, or placed in various footersand sidebars on your site. But it’s important tokeep links to a minimum to avoid clutter andthe appearance of a cheap, salesy site thatisn’t dedicated to delivering quality content.Boosting Sales With Content MarketingContent marketing is a staple of the onlinemarketing world, and it can work for just aboutany kind of affiliate marketing effort. Buildaffiliate links into substantial content such asarticles, long-form posts or resource lists, andcreate an audience that returns again andagain for useful information.Promoting More Links in Less TimeWith affiliate marketing, it’s all about gettinglinks in front of the people who might bewilling to click. To promote more links inless time, consider repurposing one piece ofcontent across multiple channels or gatheringmultiple links into a single resource list post or“best of.” that can be shared again and again.Optimizing Your Website for Link SharingA website used for affiliate marketing needs tobe accessible and user friendly. Search EngineOptimization, or SEO, is essential for gettingorganic, or naturally occurring, searches toyour site, so make sure that your site can befound. Posting highly searchable contentCREATIVE MARKET PARTNER GUIDE

Resource pages orcurated collections can also feature keywordrich content that matches searches. While it’s important to make sure postscontain one or two instances of essentialkeywords related to your niche, it’s essentialto avoid “keyword stuffing,” a practice thatlabels a site as low quality and spam laden.Add keywords and descriptions, as wellas your affiliate link, to images as well.WordPress and other site builders also offerplugins designed to check each post andpage for SEO best practices, so that boththe content and the page’s metadata can beoptimized for search. Make it easy for visitorsto find and share your links, too.
