Academic RegulationsThe Trustees of the California StateUniversity have established a program ofacademic renewal. Students having difficultymeeting graduation requirements due to agrade point deficiency may petition to haveup to two semesters or three quarters ofprevious college work discounted from allconsiderations associated with requirements for the baccalaureate degree.Academic renewal is intended only to facilitate graduation from Humboldt State; it doesnot apply to individuals who already possessa baccalaureate degree or who meet graduation requirements without the approval ofa petition for academic renewal.Conditions. In order to qualify for academicrenewal, students must meet all of the conditions established by the Trustees:Academic Probation & DisqualificationAn undergraduate seeking a bachelor’s degree, a post-baccalaureate student seekinga second bachelor’s degree, or an unclassified post-baccalaureate student will beplaced on academic probation if either theoverall grade point average or the cumulativeGPA at Humboldt falls below 2.0 (C gradeaverage).If a student is on academic probation and theHumboldt State cumulative GPA is below thefollowing levels, the student will be academically disqualified:Freshmen ( 30 units) below 1.50Sophomores (30—59.9 units) below 1.70Juniors (60—89.9 units) below 1.85Seniors ( 90 units), post-baccalaureatestudents seeking a second bachelor’sdegree below 1.95Unclassified post-baccalaureate graduatebelow 1.95Note: A student may remain on probationfor no more than two sequential semesters.After two semesters on academic probation, a student must either return to goodacademic standing or be disqualified.R This policy can be applied only if studentshave met all graduation requirements exceptGPA. AND present evidence in the petition thatthe coursework to be disregarded was, dueto extenuating circumstances, substandardand not representative of the student’s present scholastic ability and level of performance. AND present evidence that if the petitionis denied, the student will have to enroll inadditional coursework involving one or moreadditional terms to qualify for the degree.Include the specific coursework or requirements involved. AND five years must have elapsed sincethe term or terms to be disregarded. Termstaken at any institution may be disregarded. AND since completing the term(s) to bedisregarded, the student must have completed at least one of the following in regardto Humboldt State coursework:15 semester units with at least a 3.0 GPA30 semester units with at least a 2.5 GPA45 semester units with at least a 2.0 GPA AND the student’s grade point averageremains below 2.0 for the major, HumboldtState, or overall.Students who believe they are eligibleshould file a Petition of the Student with theRegistrar through the Office of the Registrar(SBS 133).2.0 or above are considered in good academic standing. Graduate students whoseHumboldt State cumulative GPA and overallGPA are 3.0 or above are considered in goodacademic standing.Graduate students, including those who areclassified or conditionally classified, andcredential seeking students will be placed onacademic probation if their Humboldt Statecumulative grade point average falls belowa 3.0 (B grade average). A graduate coordinator may also notify a student of academicprobation or disqualification for failure tomaintain a GPA of 3.0 or better in all courses taken to satisfy the requirements of thedegree. Graduate students may be placedon probation and/or disqualified for failureto make adequate progress in the program,as defined by the requirements and policiesof individual programs, by recommendationof the program faculty and graduate coordinator, and action of the graduate dean. Whileon academic probation, if a graduate studentor a credential student’s cumulative GPA atHumboldt State is below a 3.0 for a secondconsecutive term, the student will be academically disqualified.DAcademic StandingGood Standing. Undergraduate studentswhose Humboldt State cumulative gradepoint average (GPA) and overall GPA are42Academic RegulationsDisqualified students will not be allowed toregister unless they are formally reinstatedand/or readmitted to the university.Regularly enrolled students who are academically disqualified from HSU are noteligible to enroll in coursework throughExtended Education.For undergraduate and unclassified postbaccalaureate students:After the absence period, an admissionapplication is required for reinstatementconsideration. Humboldt State reserves theright to accept applications for disqualifiedstudents during specified application termsonly. Please contact the Office of Admissionsfor more information.First DQ: Student must take off a minimumof one semester before reapplying.AFTAcademic RenewalSecond DQ: Student must take off a minimum of a full year before reapplying.Students may be required to take additionaltime off, or complete courses at a differentinstitution before being readmitted.Third DQ: No option to reapply to HSU. Maycomplete coursework elsewhere and reapply to a different CSU campus.For graduate and credential students:First DQ: Students may be immediately reinstated to the university given a positive recommendation from the graduate programincluding an agreement by a graduate facultymember to serve as the student’s advisorsubmitted to the Graduate Studies Office.Second DQ: Student must take a minimumof one semester off before reapplying.Students may be required to take additionaltime off. Students may be readmitted to theuniversity given a positive recommendationfrom the graduate program including anagreement by a graduate faculty member toserve as the student’s advisor. Students willbe required to provide a letter with a statement describing the reasons for the academic probation and a plan to address theunderlying problems in order to increase thelikelihood of success. Both documents will beforwarded to the Graduate Studies Officefor processing. After the absence period,an admission application is required for reinstatement consideration. Humboldt Statereserves the right to accept applications fordisqualified students during specified application terms only. Third DQ: No option to reapply to HSU. Maycomplete coursework elsewhere and reapply to a different CSU campus.Financial aid and veterans educationalbenefits have satisfactory academic progress criteria that can affect aid eligibility.Baccalaureate and post-baccalaureate levelveterans and eligible dependent students willbe placed on veteran’s academic probationif their cumulative grade point average atHumboldt State falls below a 2.00. Veteransand eligible dependents are permitted amaximum of two semesters on probationbefore their benefits will be terminateddue to unsatisfactory academic progress.Contact the VETS Office, LL 58, for information regarding veterans educational benefitcriteria.Contact the Financial Aid Office, SBS 231,for information regarding satisfactory academic progress standards for financial aidrecipients.A student may be placed on administrativeacademic probation for any of the followingreasons:The conditions for removal of administrative-academic probation are not metwithin the period specified.2.The student becomes subject to academic probation while on administrative-academic probation.3.The student becomes subject to administrative-academic probation forthe same or similar reason that thestudent has previously been placedon administrative-academic probation,although the student is not currently insuch status.Not all courses are available to be challenged. The instructor of the course andthe department chair must first approvethe credit by exam. Approval by the department chair and the instructor will bebased upon consideration of preparationand background, the nature of the work tobe covered, and the availability of qualifiedstaff members to give the examination.Units earned by examination will not counttoward the residency requirement atHumboldt State. Persons challengingcourses must be enrolled in other coursesas matriculating students. Applications forinternal credit by examination are availablefrom the Office of the Registrar, SBS 133Special Cases of Administrative-AcademicDisqualificationAn appropriate campus administrator inconsultation with academic department,Dean of the College, and/or other appropriate parties, may disqualify a student whoat any time during enrollment in a programleading to professional licensure or credential, has demonstrated behavior so contraryto the established standards and criteriaof the profession for which the student ispreparing as to render the student unfit forthe profession. In such cases, disqualificationwill occur immediately upon notice to thestudent, which shall include an explanationof the basis for the action, and the campusmay require the student to discontinueenrollment as of the date of the notification.Withdrawal from all or a substantialportion of a program of studies intwo successive terms or in any threeterms. (Note: A student whose withdrawal is directly associated with achronic or recurring medical conditionor its treatment is not to be subject toAdministrative-Academic probation forsuch withdrawal.)3.External Credit By Exam. Humboldt Statemay grant credit for passing scores onexternal examinations such as AdvancedPlacement (AP), CLEP, DSST, EEE, andInternational Baccalaureate (IB) exams.No more than 30 semester units of suchcredit may apply to a baccalaureate degree.Advanced Placement (AP) and InternationalBaccalaureate (IB) credits are excluded fromthis limit. If the content covered by an examination duplicates other credit awarded, theunits will be adjusted from the amount indicated. See”Credit for External Examinations”on page 52.Students who have been disqualified, eitheracademically or administratively may not enroll in any regular campus session (e.g., openuniversity), and may be denied admission toother educational programs operated orsponsored by the University.Advanced Placement. Humboldt StateUniversity grants credit toward its undergraduate degrees for successful completionof examinations of the Advanced PlacementProgram of the College Board. Studentswho present scores of three or better willbe granted up to six semester units (ninequarter units) of college credit.Repeated failure to progress towardthe stated degree objective or otherprogram objective, including that resulting from assignment of 15 units of NC(No Credit), when such failure appearsto be due to circumstances within thecontrol of the student.Graduate Student Administrative-AcademicProbation and Disqualification. For policyspecific to graduate students, see ”TheMaster’s Degree” on page 83.Information about the number of unitsawarded and how they meet specific academic requirements may be found in thefollowing charts.Add/DropCredit for Non-Collegiate Instruction(see Schedule Adjustments)Humboldt State University grants undergraduate degree credit for successful completionof non-collegiate instruction, either militaryor civilian, appropriate to the baccalaureate degree, which has been recommendedby the Commission on Educational Creditand Credentials of the American Councilon Education. The numbers of units allowedare those recommended in the Guide to theEvaluation of Educational Experience in theArmed Services and the National Guide toEducational Credit for Training Programs.D2.1.R1.weeks of the semester. Do not register forthe class you would like to challenge.AFTAdministrative-Academic Probation &Disqualificationadministratively disqualified if any of thefollowing occur:Failure to comply, after due notice, withan academic requirement or regulation,as defined by campus policy which isroutine for all students or a definedgroup of students (examples: failure tocomplete a required CSU or campusexamination, failure to complete a required practicum, failure to comply withprofessional standards appropriate tothe field of study, failure to complete aspecified number of units as a condition for receiving student financial aidor making satisfactory progress in theacademic program).A student who has been placed on administrative-academic probation may beAdmission & Evaluation ofAcademic Records (GeneralInformation)Credit by ExaminationChallenging a Course. Students maychallenge courses by taking examinationsdeveloped at Humboldt State University.Credit shall be awarded to those who passthem successfully. Military Credit. Students may earn generaleducation and elective credit for one yearof active military service with an honorabledischarge by filing a copy of their Member4 DD214 with the Veterans Enrollment &Transition Services (VETS) office. Studentsmay earn credit for education and trainingcourses completed in the military based onrecommendations by the American Councilon Education. Humboldt State Universitywill maintain a written record of the previous education and training of veterans andeligible persons, the Degree Audit Report willclearly indicate that credit has been grantedwhen applicable, per 21.4253 Studentsare required to submit a military registrytranscript to VETS.Contact Veterans Enrollment & TransitionServices to see about obtaining a military registry transcript or if you have questions aboutyour military evaluation, 707-826-6272.Advisor ChangeRequests for an advisor change are made byfilling out an Advisor Change form obtainedfrom the Office of the Registrar (SBS 133),or online forms.humboldt.edu/advisorchange.AttendanceThere is no limit to the number of courses astudent can petition to audit within a term.You should register for the course to beaudited prior to the deadline to add courses(see Academic Deadlines at registrar.humboldt.edu/academic-deadlines).Use an Audit Petition to obtain the signature/approval of the instructor of thecourse you wish to audit. Forms are availablein the Office of the Registrar, SBS 133, oronline at registrar.humboldt.edu. Coursesaudited must be paid for following the samefee structure as courses in which a studentis normally enrolled.Once enrolled as an auditor, a student maynot change to a credit status unless thechange is requested no later than the lastday to add a course.An AU grade for the audited course will appear on the permanent record. There areno grade points earned nor are the unitscounted in earned, attempted or GPA hours.Audited courses are not eligible for inclusionin the determination of full/part-time statusin the awarding of financial aid.Cancelled ClassesClasses scheduled to be offered by thecolleges of Humboldt State University arelisted in the class schedule. Humboldt Statereserves the right to cancel, postpone, divide, change the time of, combine scheduledclasses, and/or change instructors.RHumboldt State University expects attendance at every class meeting. Students whohave been absent from a class or lab sessionwithin the first week of instruction may bedropped from the course for non-attendanceby the instructor no later than the end of thesecond week of instruction.fee structure applies as for credit students.Regular class attendance is expected.Catalog Rights &Continuous EnrollmentDNot all instructors will drop students onthe basis of non-attendance. Students areresponsible for ensuring the correct coursesare on their schedules prior to the add/dropdeadline. Failure to drop the course officiallywill result in a grade of “WU” or “F” beingsubmitted by the instructor. (A “WU” is awithdrawal unauthorized which is computedin your GPA the same as an “F” grade.)Auditing a CourseA student must petition the Office of theRegistrar to audit a class. The Audit Petitionmust be approved by the instructor and havethe fees paid. The petition must be returnedto the Office of the Registrar, SBS 133, bythe twentieth day of instruction (census).Humboldt permits students to audit only afterthose otherwise eligible to enroll on a creditbasis have had opportunity to do so. The same44Academic RegulationsClass LevelStudents are classified according to thenumber of semester units completed: FreshmenSophomoresJuniorsSeniorsfewer than 30 units30 to 59.9 units60 to 89.9 units90 or more unitsCommencementCommencement ceremonies take placeonce per academic year on the Saturdayfollowing spring semester final exams. Eachcollege hosts its own ceremony.Credit HourAs of July 1, 2011, federal law (Title 34,Code of Federal Regulations, sections600.2 and 600.4) requires all accreditedinstitutions to comply with the federal definition of the credit hour. For all CSU degreeprograms and courses bearing academiccredit, the “credit hour” is defined as “theamount of work represented in intendedlearning outcomes and verified by evidenceof student achievement that is an institutionally established equivalency that reasonablyapproximates not less than: One hour of classroom or direct facultyinstruction and a minimum of two hoursof out-of-class student work each weekfor approximately fifteen weeks for onesemester or trimester hour of credit, orten to twelve weeks for one quarter hourof credit, or the equivalent amount ofwork over a different amount of time; orAFTof units allowed. Appropriate documentationof instruction/coursework must be submitted to the registrar through the Office ofthe Registrar before credit can be awarded.A student’s catalog rights are based onwhen and where you begin college and howlong you have been “continuously enrolled.”Students who have been enrolled either ata California Community College or a CSUcampus for at least one semester or twoquarters of consecutive calendar yearsare considered to be “in continuous attendance.” A student in continuous attendancemay choose to meet the requirements forgraduation specified in the Humboldt StateUniversity catalog which was/is in effect: When the student first enrolled in anyCSU or California community college, When the student first enrolled at Humboldt, or When the student graduates.Note: Students changing their major or minor may be required to complete the majoror minor requirements in effect at the timeof the change. At least an equivalent amount of work asrequired in paragraph (1) of this definitionfor other academic activities as established by the institution, including laboratory work, internships, practice, studiowork, and other academic work leadingto the award of credit hours.”A credit hour is assumed to be a 50-minuteperiod. In courses in which “seat time” doesnot apply, a credit hour may be measuredby an equivalent amount of work, as demonstrated by student achievement.Credit LimitationsExtension and Correspondence. Studentsmay count no more than 24 semester unitsof extension or correspondence courses toward a bachelor’s degree. Note: These maynot count toward the residency requirement.Open University. Students may count nomore than 24 semester units of OpenUniversity / Special Session courses towarda bachelor’s degree. No more than nine unitsof Open University/Special Session coursescan apply toward a master’s degree (pro-2020-2021 Humboldt State University Catalog

No more than 70 semesterunits earned at an accredited communitycollege may transfer to Humboldt State(California Code of Regulations, Title 5).No more than six units earned in intercollegiate athletics may count toward graduation requirements. No more than two unitsof intramural courses may count towardgraduation.Credit/No CreditMandatory Credit/No Credit. Some courses are offered only credit/no credit — noletter grades. These include activity courses,thesis projects, field projects, independentstudy courses, and specialized courses.Double MajorStudents may earn a bachelor’s degree withtwo majors by completing the requirementsfor both programs. Although both majors appear on the permanent record, the studentreceives one degree.Students may request a second major onlyif they meet the following criteria:1. Declare second major before earning90 units; and2. Demonstrate that they can graduate withboth majors completed in fewer than140 total units.Students who choose to complete a secondmajor and cannot complete the requiredcourses in less than 140 units may submit arequest for an exception to the departmentchair and college dean.enrolled and is not eligible for any servicesfrom the university. Students will be apprisedof registration information and deadlines forthe term they are to return to HumboldtState, via their preferred email address.Note: Students must keep their HSU preferred email address up-to-date. Please see the followingsection on “Email Policy.”Email PolicyHSU recognizes email systems as tools forconducting official university business. Assuch, HSU provides centrally managed emailaccounts, and students are responsible forchecking their HSU email account for officialcommunications. The university may alsouse other forms of communication, such asregistered mail.Each student user is entitled to one mailbox.Email account holders are responsible forsafeguarding access to their campus emailwhen using any computing device and following campus acceptable use policy on campuscomputer usage and safety guidelines. Foradditional information, see Email Policy l Credit/No Credit. In some courses, students choose between taking a lettergrade or credit/no credit. A student choosing the credit/no credit option must do soby the eighth week of classes; other wise thestudent will receive a letter grade.Disqualification(see Academic Standing)Courses used to fulfill major requirementsmay not be taken on an optional credit/nocredit basis. No more than 24 semesterunits of credit/no credit (mandatory and/oroptional) taken at Humboldt State will counttoward a bachelor’s degree.Educational Leave(Leave of Absence)Undergraduate students (in addition to postbaccalaureate students who are pursuing acertificate or bachelor’s degree) who plan onnot attending Humboldt State University fora semester, can request a leave of absenceor educational leave from the university ifqualified.RGraduate students can choose optional CR/NC only for courses not required by theirapproved program. No more than one-thirdof master’s degree courses may be takencredit/no credit.Drop/Add(see Schedule Adjustments)Students may take only one optional CR/NCcourse per semester at Humboldt State.DEvaluating Credit. For an undergraduate,unclassified post-baccalaureate, and secondbachelor’s degree student, credit is equivalent to a passing grade (A, B, C, or C-). Nocredit is equivalent to a D or lower. For agraduate student who is in a master’s degreeprogram, or a credential-seeking student,credit is equivalent to a passing grade (A, B,or B-). No credit is equivalent to a C or lower.A leave of absence may be requested fortwo terms, but may be extended for two additional terms (for a maximum of four terms)under special circumstances. For moreinformation or to obtain an educational leaverequest, contact the Office of the Registrar(SBS 133), or go to registrar.humboldt.edu.Although grades of CR and NC do not affect GPA calculation, some universities andmany graduate schools interpret an NCgrade as an F.Dean’s ListAn undergraduate student who completes atleast 12 graded (A-F) units with a minimumterm grade point average of 3.50 is designated on the Dean’s List. This designation appears on the student’s academic transcript.Graduate students, including those whoare classified or conditionally classified, andcredential seeking students, should requesta leave of absence or educational leave fromthe university if they will not be attendingHSU each semester. The request shouldbe submitted to the Office of AcademicPrograms & Undergraduate/GraduateStudies, SH 217A.All students must attend at least one termprior to requesting a leave of absence. Aleave of absence maintains continuing student status. This allows students to maintaincatalog rights and eligibility to enroll for theterm immediately after the expiration of theleave without reapplying to the university.While on leave a student is not considered2020-2021 Humboldt State University CatalogSetting automatic forwarding of an officialHSU email address to another address isdiscouraged. Having email lost as a resultof forwarding does not absolve the accountholder from responsibilities associated withcommunication sent to their official emailaddress. The university is not responsiblefor the handling of email by outside vendorsor unofficial servers.Enrollment LimitationsThe CSU may impose unit limitations on aterm-by-term basis. Check with the Officeof the Registrar’s website for the most upto-date information.Due to their academic standing, somestudents are limited to enrolling in no morethan 12 units. Advisors cannot change unitsfor these students. These students shouldcontact the Office of the Registrar, SBS 133,for information on their unit limit.Full-Time StatusA normal course load is 15 units for undergraduates to ensure timely progress towardsthe bachelor’s degree. Undergraduates taking twelve or more semester units, graduatestudents taking nine or more semesterunits, or post-baccalaureate students takingtwelve or more semester units are enrolledfull-time for student verification purposes.Academic Regulations45

Grades for fall semester are available inJanuary; spring grades are available the endof May; summer grades are available in midAugust. Grades are not sent by mail or email.Grading Symbols(See Grade Point System chart for specificgrade point values.)A — Outstanding achievementB — Very good, commendable achievementC — Satisfactory achievementD — Minimum performanceF — Failure without creditAU — Audit grade does not earn academicor degree credit. This grade refers to thestudent’s status as an auditor. See “Auditinga Course” under Academic Regulations inthis catalog for further details.CR, Credit — satisfactory achievement ofcourse requirements. Does not affect GPAcalculation.RP, Report in Progress is used in conjunction with thesis project and other courseswhere work assigned extends beyond oneacademic term. The RP indicates that workis in progress but that assignment of a finalgrade must await completion of additionalwork. RP is not included in the student’sgrade point average. Work is to be completed in one year except for master’s thesiscourses. Master’s thesis courses with anRP grade must be completed within sevenyears from the end of the term in which itwas assigned. If an undergraduate studentdoes not complete the coursework withinone year, the RP grade will be administratively changed to a grade of F (Failure) andwill be included in the student’s grade pointaverage or to a grade of NC (No Credit) depending on the grade mode of the course.If a graduate student does not completethe coursework within seven years, the RPgrade will be administratively changed to agrade of F (Failure) and will be included in thestudent’s grade point average or to a gradeof NC (No Credit) depending on the grademode of the course.Grade Point SystemGradeGradePointsIncludedin GPAA .4.0 . It is the responsibility of the student tobring pertinent information to the attentionof the instructor and to determine, from theinstructor, the remaining course requirements which must be satisfied to removethe Incomplete. The instructor of the coursewill complete an Authorized Incomplete form,available online via the Faculty/StudentCenter. The date by which the course is to becompleted will be stated; however, no morethan one year from the time the class endedwill be allowed to complete the requirements(except due to special circumstances asapproved by instructor and submission of aPetition of the Student). Either the instructorwill change the Incomplete to an appropriategrade or it will administratively be changedto either a letter grade of F (Failure), orother grade as indicated by the instructor,and will be included in the student’s gradepoint average or to a grade of NC (No Credit)depending on the grade mode of the course.a grade has not been reported to the Officeof the Registrar.NC, No Credit indicates unsatisfact
