I. Mission Statementunderstanding of each other.Approved October 20, 2005Saint Xavier University, founded and sponsored by theSisters of Mercy, extends the teaching ministry of JesusChrist to those seeking higher education. As an officiallyrecognized ministry of the Catholic church [1], theUniversity grounds its core activities of teaching, learning, scholarship, and service in Catholic theologicalprinciples that affirm the goodness and value of allcreation and posit a view of human persons as createdin the image of God and thus free, rational, relationaland endowed with inherent dignity.Saint Xavier University, a Catholic institution inspired bythe heritage of the Sisters of Mercy, educates persons tosearch for truth, to think critically, tocommunicate effectively and to serve wisely andcompassionately in support of human dignity and thecommon good.III. Vision of Our Catholic andMercy IdentityApproved by Saint Xavier University Board of Trustees,October 12, 2005, and by the Members of the Corporation, the Sisters of Mercy, on October 20, 2005. Reaffirmed bythe Saint Xavier University Board of Trustees, September11, 2017. Updated by the Saint Xavier University Board ofTrustees, September 30, 2020.As a Catholic university, Saint Xavier Universitychallenges all the members of its community to searchfor truth, especially religious truth, and to engage ina dialogue between faith and reason that ultimatelyleads toward the contemplation of God’s creation andsocial action for the common good. This search for truthdemands careful observation, critical analysis, vigorousdebate, personal and communal theologicalreflection, and ethical and engaged decision-makingleading toward a life that respects both the inherentdignity of another and the worth of all creation.Setting the context for the search for truth, theUniversity encourages its community, especially itsstudents, to become familiar with the richness of theCatholic intellectual tradition and the imperatives ofCatholic social teaching. Respecting academic freedom, the University strives to be a place where the vigorousdiscussion of ideas can occur, especially as they relate toits mission as a Catholic university. In the spirit ofrespectful and critical discourse, the Universitywelcomes the breadth of the Catholic tradition as well asthe voices of other religious and non-religiouscommunities.II. Core ValuesThe Saint Xavier University community commits itself topracticing eight core values as it engages in a search fortruth and knowledge, both for personal enhancementand to understand and improve our world.Respect moves us to understand the gifts and uniquecontributions of every person in the Universitycommunity and to value diverse perspectives.Excellence commits us to challenge ourselves to utilizeour God-given gifts: intellectual, social, physical, spiritualand ethical.Compassion compels us to stand with and embraceothers in their suffering that, together, we mayexperience God’s liberating and healing presence.Service calls us to use our gifts, talents, and abilities toadvance the genuine well-being of our community andthose we encounter. As a Mercy university, Saint Xavier University challengesits community members to teach, learn, research andact not only for themselves but also for others. Thus, aseminal characteristic of the University is itscommitment to service. Ideally, such service, whetherdirect or through the University’s efforts to understandand re mediate unjust systems, reflects the spirituality ofCatherine McAuley, the founder of the Sisters ofMercy. This spirituality is grounded in the theology ofthe Incarnation, animated by the life, death andresurrection of Jesus, and expressed through acts ofcompassion that embody the spiritual and corporalworks of mercy. In particular, the University communityexpresses special concern for those who areeconomically poor, especially women and children. In sodoing, the University goes beyond simple, passiveexpressions of heartfelt concern and even thewillingness to stand with those who suffer. It seeks toright what is wrong and restore what is broken, thereby promoting human dignity, justice and thecommon good.Hospitality draws us to do our daily work with a spirit ofgraciousness that welcomes new ideas and people of allbackgrounds and beliefs.Integrity gives us the ability to realize the greater goodin our actions and programs and challenges us to lookat our work and ourselves holistically and as one unitedwith others across the globe.Diversity builds a community that fosters a climate thatis open and welcoming to diverse people, ideas andperspectives; that promotes a constructive discourse onthe nature of diversity; and that engages faculty, staffand students in activities that promote the University’score values.Learning for Life, in the liberal arts tradition, encourages us to pursue knowledge and truththroughout our lives in ways that improve ourcommunities and ourselves and that strengthen our4

co-curricular programs.Saint Xavier University signifies and celebrates itsCatholic and Mercy heritage in its symbolic, sacramental and liturgical expressions and in itscommunal and collegial ethos. The University offersmany opportunities to reflect, pray, worship and accessthe sacraments. It symbolizes its rich faith traditionthrough the appropriate placement of religious symbolsand artwork. Further, it observes liturgical seasons andfeasts central to its Catholic and Mercy heritage andprovides orientation and mentoring programs thateducate the community about this identity. At the heart of the academic mission is the University’scommitment to a strong general education programthat introduces students to college life and learning, broadens their knowledge of the arts and sciences, helps them integrate learning and community concernsand prepares them for success in their major fields ofstudy and life after graduation. In all programs of study, the University encourages the examination offundamental questions of human concern, respectfuldialogue in the context of diverse points of view andexperience, and the search for truth and justice.Recognizing that the search for God and the celebrationof God’s presence is ubiquitous, the University providesopportunities for those of other faith traditions andthose on a personal journey of faith to study, to express,to worship, to celebrate and to discuss their religiousbeliefs in a climate that is respectful, hospitable andopen to all.In an atmosphere of intellectual rigor made possibleby academic freedom, University faculty develop andteach courses in their areas of advanced study, extendresearch in their disciplines, produce scholarly andcreative work, and serve the University and community.Faculty are also responsible for academic policies andthe design and content of the University curriculum. Inteaching, scholarship and service, faculty represent oneof the most visible examples of the intellectual life of theUniversity. To summarize, offering the opportunity for highereducation within a Catholic and Mercy context, SaintXavier University honors Jesus Christ whom itrecognizes as “the way, the truth, and the life,” the mottoof the University inscribed on its seal.Students at Saint Xavier encounter a wide range ofcourse work, co-curricular activities, communityexperiences and support services designed to enhancetheir learning at all levels and to help them developmore fully as confident, contributing citizen leaders ofan increasingly complex and global community. The University seeks students of diverse talents, experiences, knowledge, interests and cultures who arewilling and prepared to learn and to seek excellence inthemselves and others.Approved, March 30, 2008 Reaffirmed by the Board ofTrustees - September 11, 2017[1] In its governance, Saint Xavier University is a Catholic and Mercyinstitution because its sponsors, the Sisters of Mercy, hold certain“reserved powers” consonant with their canonical (church) and civilresponsibilities for the University. These “reserved powers” areoutlined in the University’s articles and bylaws and, with limitedexceptions, are exercised on behalf of the Sisters of Mercy by theConference for Mercy Higher Education. It is through this governancerelationship with the Sisters of Mercy that Saint Xavier University isrecognized by the Roman Catholic Church as a Catholic institution andVital to the success of teaching and learning are thededicated members of variously skilled academicsupport services and the administrative leadershipcharged with fostering strategic planning, institutionalassessment and effective stewardship and deploymentof University resources.ministry.IV.
