Corporate SpecificationC-H 3-3220-131 Copyright IBM Corp. 19991999-04IBM Traditional Chinese Graphic Character Set for IBM BIG-5 CodeDBCS-PCRequirements4. External Standards4.1 Republic of China's CNS 11643-1984The Standard Interchange Code for Generally-usedChinese Characters (SICGCC) for the Republic ofChina was originally defined in 1984, which wasbroadly implemented as a de facto standard bycomputer/telecommunication vendors. SICGCC hasbeen evolved to CNS 11643 in 1986, which is theROC's national Chinese standard. A total of 13 494coded graphic characters: namely 441 non-Chinese(including 33 Chinese control characters) and 13 053Chinese characters (5 401 primary and 7 652 secondaryChinese characters) were defined in CNS 11643-1984.CNS 11643 has the framework consisting of 16 (94 by94) planes. Each code point on a plane is representedby two bytes with the valid range being X'21' throughX'7E' for each byte. The maximum number of codepoints on a plane is 8 836.The Chinese characters are assigned into the first andsecond planes. The first plane contains non-Chineseand frequently used primary Chinese characters, arranged in total stroke sequence. The second planecontains less frequently used secondary Chinese characters, arranged in a total stroke sequence.4.3 De facto Standard BIG-5Several computer vendors and the Institute for Information Industry (III) in Republic of China haveoffered so called “BIG-5 Code” in order to promote“Big five Chinese software applications” since 1984.The “BIG-5 Code” has become the most popularinternal code in the personal computer/system industryin Republic of China.“BIG-5 Code” was designed to support the CNS11643-1984 character set and to follow the charactersequence of CNS 11643-1984. When CNS 11643 wasrevised in 1986, more than 200 characters were addedand graphic character representations were modified forseveral characters. The “BIG-5 Code” followed theCNS 11643-1986 in terms of the graphic character representation.IBM BIG-5 code is compatible with the de factostandard “BIG-5 Code” and has additionally accommodated the IBM selected characters and user definable characters in order to be consistent with otherexisting IBM coded graphic character sets likeDBCS-PC, DBCS-Host and EUC.4.4 IBM Selected Characters4.2 Republic of China's CNS 11643-1986The graphic character set for IBM BIG-5 code, whichis specified in this specification, is basically sequencedbased on CNS 11643-1984. The graphic characterrepresentations of CNS 11643-1986 have been adoptedfor 3 (1 primary and 2 secondary) Chinese charactersto be compatible with the de facto industry standard“BIG-5 Code.”CNS 11643-1986 is the modified version of CNS11643-1984.A total of 13 735 coded graphiccharacters: namely 684 non-Chinese (including 33Chinese control characters) and 13 051 Chinese characters (5 401 primary and 7 650 secondary Chinese characters) have been defined in CNS 11643-1986.The characters which have the incompatibility with thede facto standard “BIG-5 Code” in terms of therelationship between the graphic character representation and the code point are defined as IBM selectedcharacters in this specification. The user definable character area is assigned to planes12 through 16. Planes 3 through 11 are reserved forfuture assignments. Two hundred forty-three characters have been addedto non-Chinese character set. The graphic characterrepresentations for 1 primary Chinese character and 2secondary Chinese characters have been changed. Two secondary Chinese characters have been deleted. The following are defined as IBM selected characters:320 non-Chinese characters which are defined inneither CNS 11643-1984 nor CNS 11643-1986 anddefined in this specification.243 non-Chinese characters which are only definedin CNS 11643-1986. (Their implementation variesamong vendors and are incompatible with theIBM Traditional Chinese Graphic Character Set for IBM BIG-5 CodePage 3 of 560

Corporate SpecificationC-H 3-3220-131 Copyright IBM Corp. 19991999-04IBM Traditional Chinese Graphic Character Set for IBM BIG-5 CodeDBCS-PCde facto “BIG-5 Code” since the characters on“BIG-5 Code” are sequenced based on CNS11643-1984.)3 Chinese characters which are defined in CNS11643-1984 but the character sequence does notfollow CNS 11643-1984. (The code points are different from the de facto “BIG-5 Code.”) SeeTable 1.Note: The graphic character representations forthose 3 (1 primary and 2 secondary) Chinese characters were changed when CNS 11643 was revisedin 1986. The revised graphic characters are compatible with the de facto “BIG-5 Code” and are, therefore, not part of the IBM selected characterset. The characters shown in Table 1 were once defined inCNS 11643-1984 but the graphic character representations were changed in CNS 11643-1986. As manycomputer/telecommunication vendors other than IBMfollowed the change, the graphic character representations of CNS 11643-1986 have been adopted in IBMBIG-5 code. As the result, the characters which wereoriginally defined in CNS 11643-1984 are defined asthe IBM selected Chinese character set in this specification.Table 1.IBM Selected Chinese C0080F288T8OK0080As shown in Table 18 on page 558, 243 non-Chinesecharacters which are additionally defined in CNS11643-1986 and 320 non-Chinese characters which areundefined in both CNS 11643-1984 and CNS11643-1986 are also defined as the IBM selected nonChinese character set. 4.5 Euro SignThe Euro, the single European currency, has beenintroduced on the first of January 1999. IBM Big5supports this currency.Page 4 of 5604.6 Relationship of IBM BIG-5 Code with CNS116434.6.1 Character Coverage. The graphic charactersdefined on the IBM BIG-5 code are the superset ofCNS 11643-1984 and CNS 11643-1986. All 441 nonChinese characters and 13 053 Chinese characters, which are defined in CNS 11643-1984, and all 243non-Chinese characters and 3 Chinese characters, which are additionally defined in CNS 11643-1986 aresupported. In addition to the graphic characters defined in CNS11643, 320 non-Chinese characters are defined as IBMselected characters. Also, see Section 11 on page 558for the detailed information on the relationship of IBMcode with CNS 11643.4.6.2 Sequence of Arrangement4.6.2.1 Non-Chinese. Non-Chinese characters are logically sequenced within each category whenever possible (that is, for Greek, Alphabet, Numerics and soon) based on CNS 11643-1984 as far as they aredefined in CNS 11643-1984. Five hundred sixty-threeIBM selected characters are sequenced based on C-H3-3220-126 1992-01 and their sequence has nothing todo with CNS 11643-1984.4.6.2.2 Primary Chinese Characters. These charactersare generally sequenced by the total stroke and theyare sequenced based on CNS 11643-1984 as far as theyare defined in CNS 11643-1984. One primary Chinesecharacter has the graphic character representation ofCNS 11643-1986 at code point X'BCB5'. The originalcharacter which has the graphic character representation of CNS 11643-1984 has been placed in the IBMselected Chinese character set area.4.6.2.3 Secondary Chinese Characters. These characters are treated the same as the primary Chinese characters. Two secondary Chinese characters have thegraphic character representations of CNS 11643-1986at code points X'D5D4' and X'DE4D'. The originalcharacters which have the graphic character representation of CNS 11643-1984 have been placed in theIBM selected Chinese character set area.IBM Traditional Chinese Graphic Character Set for IBM BIG-5 Code

Corporate SpecificationC-H 3-3220-131 Copyright IBM Corp. 19991999-04IBM Traditional Chinese Graphic Character Set for IBM BIG-5 CodeDBCS-PC4.6.3 Code Scheme. The code scheme of the IBMBIG-5 code conforms to the DBCS-PC which isdefined in C-S 3-3220-102. It is independent of thecode scheme of CNS 11643 which conforms to ISO2022. 4.7 Relationship of IBM BIG-5 Code with the current DBCS-Host4.7.1 Character Coverage. The graphic charactersdefined on the IBM BIG-5 code support the same characters defined for the current DBCS-Host. That is, 1 005 non-Chinese (with Euro sign), 5 402 primaryChinese, 7 654 secondary Chinese characters are supported. In addition, 6 204 user definable characters aresupported.See C-H 3-3220-126 for the current DBCS-Host specifications.4.7.2 Sequence of Arrangement. Since the charactersdefined for IBM BIG-5 code are basically sequencedbased on CNS 11643-1984, the character sequence ofIBM BIG-5 code is different from the current DBCS-Host. 4.7.3 Code Scheme. Although IBM BIG-5 code con forms to the code scheme of DBCS-PC defined in C-S3-3220-102, the code point assignment of the characteris totally different from each other.5. Specification of Character Repertoire5.1 Identification of Graphic CharactersThis document specifies the repertoire of the CH-Tgraphic character set for IBM BIG-5 code. Eachgraphic character of the repertoire is identified by aunique Graphic Character Global Identifier (GCGID).In the CH-T graphic character set, GCGIDs take theform 'Tzzz0080'; those for user definable characterstake the form 'Xzzz0080', which follows the specification of C-H 3-3220-055. GCGIDs of non-Chinesegraphic characters refer to those registered in C-H3-3220-055.5.2 Algorithm of GCGIDThe zzz value for 'Tzzz0080' and 'Xzzz0080' is calculated by the following algorithm:1) Assign virtual code points starting with the firstcode point of EBCDIC code range sequentially tothe graphic character set of the proper collating.2) Convert both bytes of the code point fromhexadecimal to decimal.3) Subtract 64 from both numbers.4) Multiply the high-order number by 192 and addthe low-order number to the result.5) Convert the resulting number to a base 36number, where the values from 0 through 35 are 0through 9, followed by A through Z. (The conversion algorithm is essentially the same as would beused to convert from decimal to hexadecimal.) Theresulting value will be a three digit value. ForCH-T, it must be between 1S1 (for code pointX'4C41' corresponded on DBCS-Host) and C3R(for code point X'91C7' corresponded onDBCS-Host).6. Character Sets and Code Page6.1 Registration of GCSGID and CPGIDThis specification registers the maximum set and thesubsets of the repertoire of the IBM CH-T GraphicCharacter Set for IBM BIG-5 Code and identifiesthem by Graphic Character Set Global Identifiers(GCSGIDs).It also specifies a relevant DBCS-PC code page forthose graphic character sets and identifies it by a CodePage Global Identifier (CPGID).Table 2 on page 6 specifies the GCSGIDs and theCPGID of the registered coded graphic character setsfor the IBM CH-T Graphic Character Set for IBMBIG-5 Code. The registration category “U” means “Unrestricted,”which implies that graphic character sets and codepages in this category have potential broad implementation in information processing products.Note: See C-H 3-3220-050 for the detail of registration categories of graphic character sets and codepages.IBM Traditional Chinese Graphic Character Set for IBM BIG-5 CodePage 5 of 560
