A prepayment of one-half of the previousyear’s tax is due on or before June 1 and a second prepayment of one-half of the previous year’s tax is due on or beforeAugust 15.Life -- Stock and Mutuals:One percent of direct premiums excluding consideration for annuities.Mutual Hospital Service Corporations:One percent of direct premiums.Fraternals:No tax on domestic and foreign fraternals.Fire, Casualty, Multiple line, Reciprocals -- Stocks and Mutuals:One and one quarter (1.25) percent of the direct premiums excluding ocean marine premiums and less dividends paid orcredited to policyholders. Ocean marine business is taxed at the rate of 6 1/2 percent on the average profit of the threepreceding years.Future Changes:thThe 79 General Assembly of the State of Iowa made legislative changes to Iowa’s premium tax laws, which reduce thepremium tax rate to 1% over a period of years. Trigger dates as well as percentages vary for the premium tax andprepayments. If you desire more information regarding the prospective premium tax changes, please see: SF 2318 of theth79 Iowa General Assembly.SECTION 505.14 -- Code of IowaWhen by the laws of any other state a premium or income or other taxes, or fees, fines, penalties, licenses, depositrequirements or other obligations, prohibitions or restrictions are imposed upon Iowa insurance companies actually doingbusiness in the other state, or upon the agents of the Iowa companies, which in the aggregate are in excess of theaggregate of the taxes, fees, fines, penalties, licenses, deposit requirements or other obligations, prohibitions orrestrictions directly imposed upon insurance companies of the other state under the statutes or this state, the sameobligations, prohibitions or restrictions of whatever kind are in the same manner and for the same purpose imposed uponinsurance companies of the other state doing business in Iowa. Insurance premium taxes paid which were not paid underprotest shall not be refunded if the refund claim is based upon an alleged error or mistake of law or erroneousinterpretation of statute regarding the validity or legality of this section under the laws or constitutions of the United Statesor this state. For the purpose of this section, an alien insurer is deemed domiciled in a state designated by it wherein it has(1) established its principal office or agency in the United States, or (2) maintains the largest amount of its assets held intrust or on deposit for the security of its policyholders or policyholders and creditors in the United States, or (3) in which itwas admitted to do business in the United States. This section does not apply to ad valorem taxes on real or personalproperty or to personal income taxes.- vi -
