5V I L L A L A TA N ATHE HISTORYThis beautiful Medici villa was bought by Grand Duke FrancescoMedici I de Medici (1570) and gifted to his lover, BiancaCappello, whom he later married. After their demise, the villawas purchased by the Santa Maria Nuova hospital. Although theproperty was not used as a hospital, the villa and the over 30farmhouses and several hundred hectares of land were used for making wine,olive oil and other foods to be sold in the city.In 1631 the property was purchased by Barone Leon Francesco PasqualeRicasoli and in 1700 by Arch. Giulio Foggini, who was also the architect whomade the tomb of Galilleo Galillei at the Basilica Santa Croce.Later in the 19th century Arch. Poggi, (who eliminated the walls aroundFlorence in order to prepare the city to become the capital of Italy and whoalso made Viale Michelangiolo), constructed the winding driveway and made adescription of the villa.
