No other home furnishing product willenhance your home’s overall appearancemore than new carpet. It adds style andluxurious comfort and, when properlyselected and maintained, represents oneof the best investments you can makein adding to the beauty of your home’sinterior. We appreciate yourinvestment in Dixie Home carpet. Our commitment to quality is yourassurance of carpet that will performfor years to come. We hope you willtake a few minutes of your time to learnhow to extend the useful life and beautyof your new carpet.Residential carpets manufactured withtoday’s technology seldom “wear out.”Instead, over time accumulated soil andtraffic cause the appearance to deteriorateas the carpet loses its original resiliencyand luster. You can do much to prolong thelife of your carpet by adopting a regularmaintenance program that incorporatesthe following recommendations.2

The Basics toLonger-lasting Beauty1.Preventative maintenance2.Vacuum regularly3.Prompt removal of spots and spills4.Periodic professional cleaningPREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE1.Eighty percent (80%) of all soil broughtinto a home is tracked in on the soles ofshoes. Walk-off mats placed at all out-side entrances will trap the soil before itcan be tracked onto your new carpet.Clean or replace these mats often sothey don’t become a source of soil.2. Carpet in traffic lanes receives the mostwear. Periodically you may want to alterheavy traffic patterns by relocatingfurniture. Some change will occur in thetexture of your carpet after you startwalking on it. This is to be expected.3. Use a quality pad. This will absorbfoot traffic energy providing greaterresiliency. Our Texture Retentionwarranty requires a pad density of 6pounds per cubic foot and a maximum7/16 inch to validate the warrantyprotection.4.Protect your carpet from pile crushingfrom heavy furniture by placing specialcups or gliders under the legs of tables, chairs and other furniture. This willdistribute the weight more evenly.5. Direct sunlight can cause fading. Protectyour carpets with the most appropriatewindow covering.3

VACUUM REGULARLYRemoving loose soil while it is on the surface ofthe carpet is the MOST IMPORTANT THING YOUCAN DO TO PROLONG THE LIFE AND BEAUTYOF YOUR CARPET. Footsteps will work thesoil deep into the carpet and make the removalof loose soil very difficult. Loose soil particlescan scratch the fibers causing premature wear.Regular and thorough vacuuming will removedust and dirt.Medium to high-traffic areas should be vacuumeddaily. Lighter traffic areas should be vacuumedat least once a week. Up to three passes of thevacuum is considered light cleaning. In heavytraffic areas, five to seven passes may berequired. We recommend a vacuum with a rotating brushor combination beater/brush bar which agitatesthe carpet pile and loosens the soil for removalby the vacuum (unless otherwise noted on carpetsample label). Be sure to adjust to the correctcarpet pile height for your carpet. If in doubt, startwith the brush at the highest position and lowerit until it contacts the carpet enough to slightlyvibrate the surface pile. Be sure the vacuumhas no teeth, combs or rough edges that coulddamage your carpet.A word of caution: Some thick loop pile carpets, commonly referred to as “Berbers,” may besensitive to brushing or rubbing from a brushvacuum attachment. The pile surface maybecome fuzzy. For this type of carpet, werecommend a suction-only vacuum. Consult yourretail sales consultant for additional information. For additional information visit the CRI website atwww.carpet-rug.org.4

PROMPT REMOVAL OFSPOTS AND SPILLSStain resistant carpets greatly improve your abilityto remove most common household spills andstains. However, it is important to note that nocarpet is completely stain proof. Stain-resistantfinishes hold the spill on the fiber’s surface, providing more time to absorb the liquid and usespot removal techniques before the spill has achance to penetrate the fiber. The longer the spillremains unattended, the more difficult it could beto remove.SPOT REMOVALPROCEDURES1.Blot liquids with a dry, white, absorbentcloth or plain white (no printing) papertowels. DO NOT SCRUB THE AREA.Scrubbing can cause pile distortion inthe affected area.2.For food and other semi-solids, gentlyscrape up with a rounded spoon.Solids should be broken up andvacuumed until completely removed.3. Refer to the spot removal guide andfollow the directions carefully.4. Pretest any spot removal agent in aninconspicuous area to make certain thesolution will not damage the fiber or thedye. If a color change occurs, anothercleaning solution should be selected.5

5.Apply a small amount of the selectedcleaning solution to a white cloth andwork in gently. Work from the edges ofthe spill to the center to prevent the spillfrom spreading.6.Continue using the first solution as longas there is a transfer of the spill tothe cloth. It is not necessary to use allof the cleaning solutions suggested ifthe first solution removes the spill.7. Rinse the affected area thoroughly withcold water and blot with a dry cloth untilall of the solution has been removed.8. Apply 1/2” layer of white paper towelsto the affected area and weigh downwith a flat, heavy object. Continue tochange paper towels as needed.RESIDUE PRECAUTIONSMany spot removal solutions leave residuesin the carpet that may attract soil. Thoroughlyrinse the area several times with lukewarmtap water. Several rinses are often necessaryto remove residues. Never use any of thesolutions in concentrations stronger than thoserecommended.6

PROFESSIONAL CLEANINGTo retain its luster and beauty, your carpetshould be deep-cleaned every 12 to 18 months, depending upon 1) the life-style of the household,2) frequency of vacuuming, and 3) whetherthe carpet is a light or dark color. You want todeep clean your carpet BEFORE it becomesexcessively soiled.Professional carpet cleaners can keep your carpetlooking fresh and new longer. Many are trainedand certified to care for carpets manufacturedfrom today’s state-of-the-art fibers. For deep-cleaning, we recommend hot water (alsoknown as steam) extraction. With this method, adetergent solution is sprayed on the carpet andremoved by extracting the dirt and solution witha powerful vacuum from either a truck-mountedor portable unit. We recommend a professionalfor this type of cleaning. A professional has beentrained to use the equipment properly so thatthe carpet will not be damaged. Additionally, theequipment he uses is much more powerful thanrental units available to you.HOT WATER EXTRACTIONREQUIREDHot water extraction, performed by a trained, qualified carpet care professional, is requiredevery 12-18 months for coverage under theselimited warranties. You must provide your receipt for proof ofservice.7

Do not get the carpet too wet. Wetting through tothe backing may result in shrinkage, discoloration, odor and delaminating. Before cleaning, it is advisable to removefurniture from the room. If this is impractical, place thick plastic film or aluminum foil underand around the legs of chairs and tables untilthe carpet is dry so that rust or furniture stains willbe prevented.CLEANING AGENTS/METHODS1.
