Miami-Dade Police Department2Miami-Dade Police connects with NextdoorBy Carmen Caldwell, Citizens’ Crime WatchFrom: The Miami HeraldNextdoorSign inThe private social network for your neighborhood.Discover your neighborhood. The Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) recentlyannounced its new partnership with the social medianetwork, Nextdoor.Through this new technology, Miami-Dade residents cannow connect online with Miami-Dade Police. For thoseof you in a municipality, check with your local policedepartment to see if they have connected with this newprogram. Citizens’ Crime Watch of Miami-Dade will usethis technology with local crime watch groups that wantto enhance communication with neighborhood residents.According to a recent study, 93 percent of Americans sayit is important to look out for each other, yet 50 percent ofAmericans do not know their neighbors by name, accordingto a Whitepages news release. That is why Nextdoor, theprivate social network for neighborhoods, was created.Nextdoor’s mission is to bring back a sense of communityto neighborhoods by offering free neighborhood websitesspecifically designed to foster conversations amongneighbors and build stronger, safer communities.Miami-Dade neighborhoods are already using Nextdoor, and now the MDPD has adopted the platform to connectwith residents to improve safety and strengthen virtualneighborhood crime watch efforts.“We’ve officially adopted Nextdoor as a strategy we canutilize to enhance our crime fighting abilities, as well asour community policing strategy,” said MDPD DirectorJ.D. Patterson. On Nextdoor, neighbors create private websites to getto know one another, ask questions, and exchange localadvice and recommendations. The MDPD will now beable to share important safety information and emergencynotifications with residents on a neighborhood levelthrough Nextdoor.Nextdoor was specifically designed to make neighborsfeel comfortable sharing information with one another. Allmembers must verify that they live within the neighborhood.Information shared on Nextdoor is password-protected andcannot be accessed by those outside the neighborhood, including the MDPD, or found on Google or other searchengines. Nextdoor never shares personal information withany third parties.Join your neighbors and the MDPD in building astronger, safer Miami-Dade today at www.nextdoor.com.

Miami-Dade Police DepartmentMiami-Dade Police DepartmentHalloween Safety TipsWalk Safely Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks. Look left, right and left again when crossing the street, and keep looking as you cross. Put electronic devices down and keep heads up. Walk, don’t run, across the street. Teach children to make eye contact with drivers before crossing infront of them. Always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic.Trick-or-Treat With an Adult Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks. Children under the age of 12 should not trick-or-treat alone. If kids are mature enoughto be out without supervision, they should stick to familiar areas that are well lit and trick-or-treatin groups. Do not let children eat treats without inspecting them first.Keep Costumes Both Creative and Safe Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks. Use reflective tape or stickers to decorate costumes and bags. Use face paint or makeup instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision. Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.Drive Extra Safely on Halloween Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks. Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Children are excitedon Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways. Look for kids at intersections, on medians, and curbs. Enter and exit driveways slowly. Ignore distractions inside your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings.Connect with us onwww.miamidade.gov/police3
