(2) Edward Vine, b.1829, d. 21 Oct 1909, Victoria.2 Mary died 01 Mar 1907, PedderBay,3 buried: St. Mary's, Metchosin. Born in Bexley, Kent. Thefamous Granny Vine who branded the bottom of an indian with heriron after he walked in and demanded "muck-a-muck" (a drink ofwhiskey) arrived in Victoria in 1853. Indians called her "MesachieTyee" - Devil Spirit . She was a midwife for the Metchosin,Colwood, Sooke, and Rocky Point districts. Pioneers said shenever lost a mother or child in all her years of service. She is buriednear the entrance to St. Mary's church.Thomas: Arrived in January 1853 on the third voyage of theNorman Morison with wife Mary Ann and 10-year old daughterBarbara Ellen. Mr. Reid was a seafairing man and was disgustedwith the outlook for the colony and at once departed for homewhere he soon died [Footprints - edited by Marion I. Helgesen].Edward: Emigrated in 1851 from Kings Lynn, Norfolk, England.Credited with piloting the first coal-laden barge out of Nanaimo in towof the brig "Cyres", with Capt. Briggs in command. He purchased 666acres at Pedder Bay in 1858 for 5 an acre and named his house"Glenrosa" (Section 40 in 1858, 41 &42 in 1874, 29 & 30 in 1874).House was destroyed by fire on Saturday, September 13, 1881. Drove stage delivering mailfor more than 50 years. He purchased his last stagecoach in1908 from TW Dempster's carriage works on Blanshard St.behind the present-day Bay department store. The price was 200. The open carriage, had three seats which held threepersons each. The coach was retired in 1915.
