Early Life The archives of Genoa show that the explorer was born Christoforo Columbo between August and October of 1451. Formation of an Idea Shortly after Filipa’s death, Columbus was in the process of trying to find a westward route to Asia. He underestimated the Earth’s circumference little did he know.

Propositions for His First Voyage In 1484, Christopher Columbus asked John the II of Portugal to pay for his voyage. After being rejected, Columbus moved to Spain with his son Diego to try and persuade Isabella of Castille and her husband, Ferdinand of Aragon. They gave him no attention and ignored his ideas.

Preparations for the First Voyage In 1492, Columbus resumed talking with rulers to pay for his first voyage. Rulers did not want to supply for his trip because Christopher was demanding too much. However, Queen Isabella finally agreed to fund for his trip.

Land Ho! On October 12, Columbus had found land, which is modern day San Salvador. Native Americans flocked to the shore and made friends with the Spaniards. Columbus called the Native Americans “Indians.” The other ships found the Bahamas and Christopher Columbus wanted to return to Spain immediately.

The Return Christopher Columbus sailed back to Spain safely, having the artifacts he had brought from San Salvador and bearing a few Native Americans that he had forced to come. The Pope granted Castille complete rights west of the Atlantic Ocean.
