ST. DOMINIC CATHOLIC CHURCH HOUSTON, TX THIRD SUNDY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 11, 2022 The third Sunday of Advent is traditionally called Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete is the Latin word meaning rejoice. This Sunday is so named because ---Rejoice-- is the first word in the entrance antiphon for today's Mass taken from Philippians 4:4,5: Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice! The Lord is near. Some people mark this Sunday on their Advent wreath with a pink candle instead of a purple candle. This Sunday is a joyful reminder that our salvation is near. This week's Gospel Reading continues our Advent reflection on the person and message of John the Baptist. Last week we heard John speak about his relationship to the coming Messiah, Jesus. This week, we hear Jesus' message to John the Baptist, now in prison, about the signs of the kingdom found in Jesus' ministry and Jesus' assessment of John's role in the Kingdom of God. Jesus' message to John about the signs of the kingdom being performed recalls the salvation described by the prophet Isaiah. This passage is a reminder that the beginning of salvation is already mysteriously present to us, but also yet to be fulfilled. Salvation is already in our midst as manifest in the miraculous deeds of Jesus and in the Church. But salvation is also to be fulfilled in the coming reign of God. Even as we observe our world today, we can find glimpses of God's work among us. Even more, we help to prepare the way for God's kingdom by our words and our deeds. This message is indeed a cause for rejoicing. El mensaje de Jesús a Juan sobre las señales del reino que se están realizando recuerda la salvación descrita por el profeta Isaías. ST. DOMINIC CATHOLIC CHURCH HOUSTON, TX THE ONE FOR WHOM OUR HEARTS LONG Put yourself in the scene of today’s Gospel passage. John the Baptist is in prison. He has heard stories of what Jesus is doing, and wants reassurance that Jesus is the long-awaited Messiah. John’s disciples and those who surrounded Jesus were faithful Jews who would have known Isaiah’s prophecies by heart. God would send One who would bring sight to the blind, healing to those who were ill, salvation to all who longed to know God’s mercy and peace. Jesus’ response to the disciples’ question rings as powerfully in our ears today as it surely did for the people who were with him that day. His actions are precisely those that the people had been told to expect. Jesus is the One for whom the people have been patiently yet anxiously waiting, like the farmer who waits for the fruits of his labor. Jesus is the One for whom our hearts TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The barren deserts will rejoice and flower. Tired bodies will receive strength. Aching hearts will be made glad (Isaiah 35:1-6a, 10). Psalm — The Lord saves us when he comes (Psalm 146). Second Reading — Be patient, for the coming of the Lord is as sure as the rain (James 5:7-10). DOMINIC CATHOLIC CHURCH HOUSTON, TX THIRD SUNDY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 11, 2022 December 12th –OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE 12 DE DICIEMBRE – NUESTRA SEÑORA DE GUADALUPE On December 9, 1531, a 57-year-old Aztec, Juan Diego, saw the Blessed Mother on a hill in Mexico City. She told Juan to have a church built in her honor. When Juan went to ask Bishop Zumarraga about this, the bishop did not understand the Indian dialect—and he did not believe in the vision Juan described. Three days later, on December 12, Mary appeared again to Juan Diego, and this time she gave him a sign for the bishop. ----Take these roses to the bishop,--- she said, as she arranged in his cloak beautiful roses she had Juan Diego pick from the hillside although it was winter. When he was admitted into the bishop’s room, Juan Diego opened his cloak, and out dropped the roses. On the cloak there remained an image of Mary as she had appeared to Juan Diego. El 9 de diciembre de 1531, un azteca de 57 años, Juan Diego, vio a la Santísima Virgen en un cerro de la Ciudad de México. Le dijo a Juan que hiciera construir una iglesia en su honor. The image of Mary on the cloak is known as Our Lady of Guadalupe for an interesting reason. On that same day, Mary appeared to Juan’s uncle and cured him, giving him a message for the bishop, saying that she would crush the serpent’s head. The bishop did not understand the Indians’ language. The Indian word for crush the serpent sounded to him like Guadalupe,--- the name of Mary’s shrine in Spain. Thinking that the Virgin wanted the new shrine to have the same name, the bishop called her Our Lady of Guadalupe. La imagen de María en el manto se conoce como Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe por una razón interesante. Ese mismo día, María se apareció al tío de Juan y lo curó, dándole un mensaje para el obispo, diciendo que aplastaría la cabeza de la serpiente. El obispo no entendía el idioma de los indios. La palabra india para aplastar a la serpiente le sonaba como Guadalupe, --- el nombre del santuario de María en España.
