To give your business thebest chance of success it isimportant that you takethe time to research, testand plan your business ideabefore you start investingyour time and money actuallysetting up the business.

Getting startedKey considerationsDo your sumsPART A of the Department of State DevelopmentStart your own business workbook (visit the Guidesand workbooks section of the Department’s smallbusiness website: www.statedevelopment.sa.gov.au/smallbusiness) has some useful templates to helpyou test key considerations for your business idea,including:1. You should list all your living expenses to see whatyou need as a minimum take-home amount tomaintain your present style of living. Your personal suitability (your character;qualifications, training, business skills andexperience; business and life goals; personalconsiderations i.e. family etc.)3. Could you meet the repayments if the venturefails? How much will you need to set aside fortaxation and personal investment for the future? Your market/s (know your industry, product orservice, customers, competitors, geography andbusiness location etc.) Financial (understanding the financialrequirements of business is fundamental tosuccess. One of the main reasons small businessesfail is insufficient capital – underestimating howmuch money is needed to start and operate thebusiness and unrealistic expectations of incomingrevenues from sales:2. If you have to raise finance to start the business, you should consider the impact of this andwhether it poses a risk to your other assets.4. What is your current available capital and can youdo better by investing it on the money market? For example, if your current employment givesyou 30,000 a year and you have 30,000 in capitalthat you could invest at (say) 10%, then yourbusiness would need to provide a taxable incomeof: 30,000/ 3,000 ( 30,000 at 10%) 33,000Will it do this? What volume of sales would you need to supportthis? If you can keep 15 cents out of each dollar of salesthen you will need a volume of: 33,000 0.15 220,000 / yearor 18,333 / month or 4,230 / weekDo you predict that your proposed venture willmeet these targets?A guide to starting a business in South AustraliaP 13

Other financial considerationsTaxationIt is important to ensure you have enough capital toestablish the business and cover your costs. It mayhelp to consider:Ask your accountant about allowable deductionswhen calculating the potential return from yourventure. Ask about possible tax liabilities so you canplan for them. Taxation is discussed in more detaillater in this guide. How much capital do you have to start thebusiness and is it enough? Many businesses failbecause the owner does not have enough moneyto start and operate the business. If you have to borrow money, do you knowwhere and at what rates you can get this? If thisis a first-time venture you may find it difficult toraise money unless you have other assets that youcan put up as collateral against the loan. Are you obtaining money at the best rates?Check that you are not buying expensive money.Shop around for the best rates and terms. Askabout overdraft and credit facilities. What is your cash-flow and budget situation? You must plan, manage and monitor yourfinances and cash-flow as an on-goingfundamental part of your business strategy. Evenif you have an accountant, you as the businessowner, must understand the numbers, know thedifference between cash and profit and be incontrol of your cash situation. A cash flow budgetwill help you forecast what cash will be availableto meet your business expenses showing theexpected flow of cash in and out and predicts thebank balance at the end of each month. This willhighlight how well you are doing, help you followup with your debtors and take corrective action inadvance if necessary to avoid/minimise potentialproblems.Your accountant can help you determine whatfinancial records you should keep, the informationthey should contain and in what format (paper and/or electronic).P 14A guide to starting a business in South Australia

These include: Sales figures Operating costsfor the business Profitability ofthe businessSales figuresIs the product or service offered by the business likely to maintain or improve its marketability,or is it in danger of becoming over-sold, out of style or obsolete? Is the business in a good location or is this the reason it is for sale?
