Unit 11: Web authoring evaluation I have used Weebly as my online web authoring tool, I used the student education section for me, my teachers and other students in my class to be able to access it. There are many benefits to why I chose to use Weebly as my eportfolio. One is that Weebly is a free meaning all the are free as well and are already provided for you. Along with Weebly being free of charge it makes it accessible to everyone worldwide. Furthermore, Weebly allows you to build up to 3 different websites. For instance I made my media ePortfolio on Weebly and then I also made a Final major project website because I made an online magazine. Another benefit is that Weebly has a wide variety of tools as a drag and drop widget which you place in wherever you want to. This made my building a website process very efficient and easier. The widgets Weebly had available that I used to generate my website included HTML/CSS which allowed me to embed other websites and links, Picture, Multiple Columns which made my layout more creative, Button, Slide Show. Another tool that I found interesting was the file tool because if I was to do any work in other software such as word, Google Docs or Powerpoint I would be able to upload it onto my Weebly for my teachers to access. In addition, Weebly is portable as I can access it on my phone instead which allows me to do work on the go even when I’m not in school. My website URL is http://rheannesportifolio.weebly.com/. Before making my website I made a ePortfolio plan on a website called Popplet.com. On my Popplet I brainstormed my ideas of what I would like to me on my website. The reason why I chose to use Popplet is because it is a free website which I can share onto my Weebly by using the HTML tool but also I am able to share it with my teachers if I needed any advice. By me making a Weebly it made my process of creating a website easier because I had a structure to stick by. During my time of making my website i have added onto my Popplet at times to start organised with my work.

On my URL website I have three headed pages named Home, Assessment and media on my menu bar which I’ve made drop down menus for including; Interests, Teachers assessments/ interims and all media units I am completing. This makes my website easier to get around and find information that viewers want to know. The drop down menu’s has helped me present my work in an organised manner instead of work being in different places especially when you may feel that on a drop down you have too much work therefore Weebly gives you the option to add another drop down page onto that page which means that your work will still all be together and easy for the visitors of my website to navigate through - this is something I have done while making my media website. Navigation bars with drop down menu’s is one of the convention web designs and all websites have. On my home page of my website it is very informative as I have introduced myself, the course I am doing, a email address where I can receive feedback and the grade i am aiming for. In addition, I made a manga character that represent me and placed it on my home to make my website personal, apply to me and make the viewers of my website feel welcoming and that they can contact me and not feel out of place. I made my manga character using www.faceyourmanga.com and screen grabbed the image and placed it on a multiply column with a statement of why I chose to create a manga instead of putting up a picture of my face as it may not be very safe. While creating my Weebly I altered the design of my website by using the CSS code standing for Cascading Style Sheet which are the instructions in the code for a website - this also allowed me to personalise my website. The CSS Code usually sits in the ‘Head’ of a HTML code for websites and it creates a template that fits across all pages on a site.

I changed the font colours of my Weebly, the font size, heading colours and background colour by using the CSS tool as the template CSS creates includes all of these functions. For instance, I often changed the Font size and colour for different reason e.g. to stand out to grab the viewers attention and to make it clear where something is. This made my website different, interesting a personal creating a visual idea on what type of person I am and allowed me to gain knowledge in using the CSS tool. The CSS options makes your website look professional for the fact that every page has the same layout making all pages look the same. This is a great positive because if this tool was not available I would have to write a code for every page which would be a long process. Therefore the CSS is a quick process which helped me while creating and completing my website otherwise I doubt it would be finished. As Well as being able to change the template of my website by using CSS I can change the colour code of my magazine by going onto ‘Design’ on Weebly then clicking on ‘edit HTML/CSS’ tab and scrolling down until i find the code that says ‘Navigation Drop Downs’. This lets me change the HTML colour code for the background of a colour. For example originally the background colour was grey as you can see and I have changed it to pink. When the drop-down background is grey the code will say ‘background: #e9e9e9. In order to change it to pink I will need a different HTML code written as ‘background: #CC0066.

Also with this ‘edit HTML/CSS’ tab you can use it to change the font style, size and colour for example you can start with a font family of Arial and change it into Times New Roman or a header from it’s original colour of black to red by using the ‘h1’, ’h2’, ‘h3’ etc with each ‘H’ standing for header and the numbers meaning which header. I experimented with these functions especially the change in drop down background colour to see how they would look but i decided to change it back to the original colour because it seemed appropriate for the meaning of my website. However, on a lot of my pages I don’t have the same header font or background for every page because I felt that it would be repetitive and became boring when going through my website but also because I didn’t feel that it would represent me as a person. While using Weebly for the past 2 years I feel that it has various tools you can use to create your own magazine not similar to someone else but I found that Weebly can be restricting at times when you don’t know how to customize and use the tools Weebly has provided but the more you learn and know about HTML and CSS codes the easier the experience will be as you will be able to change the design and layout of your website. HTML is a language for describing web pages and the code behind all web pages. HTML which stands for HyperText Markup Language. Is used to create HTML documents - this documents allow plain text to me formatted for example the ‘Custom HTML’ widget on Weebly lets you change the code in order to embed external documents from other websites like popplet. This is one thing I have used the HTML widget or many times while creating my website. In addition it can be used to clearly separate pages when you want them to be a different CSS code. In addition to me using HTML and CSS on my Weebly I also often used the 'Multiple columns' widget as it allowed me to put two or more pieces of work together instead of having them on-top of each other or on different pages which makes it look untidy and unorganised. On all pages of my Weebly I tried to make them not look the same therefore I changed the layout using different features available on Weebly for instance on my animation research page I created a hyperlink and an image which I had created in Photoshop which one clicked on brought you too my ‘Bibme’ which contained all of my research.

Furthermore, the image above is of my final major project where I had to get the embed code of my video to put it on my Weebly. Therefore, to get the embed code of YouTube I had to click ‘Share’, you have four options and you click on ‘embed’, when embed is clicked a code will appear like the highlighted on in the image which you then copy. When on my website I had to drag down the ‘custom HTML’ Widget and paste the code into the space available. Once the code is pasted, the code consists of html language - one which is easily understood is width "560" height "315" measured in pixels and is

the width and height of the file I just embedded. I can now change this dimensions if I wish to and I did because the size of the video didn’t fit in the space properly which meant I expanded it. Another html language that is recognisable is ‘src’ which stands for ‘source’ meaning where I got my video from which was YouTube - therefore the YouTube URL(web address) appears. Also iframe as the start of the embed code tells me that this is a file or document to be embedded and /iframe at the end of the code tells me the website that the frame is finished. HTML is used to define text added to a page and this text can come in different forms. The text consists of the main body text. This code will start with p and end with /p to tell the website where this text finishes. This is a similar code to when you want to change the sub-heading on the webpage I can type in h1 and the header text will start until you type /h1 when it will finish. This is done within CSS. I feel that my Weebly has a good layout as it varies on different pages surprising the viewer as they may not expected that and I included many different tools Weebly has to offer. But with this I have used navigation bars making it easy for my viewers to manoeuvre around my website. I tried to keep my website as professional as possible by only changing the header for some pages but I kept the background and drop down menu’s grey because the colour works well and looks professional. One

page on my website that I think is partly successful is my Hybrid film trailers because I included ‘Multiple columns’, ‘Picture’, screen grabs of different parts in the trailer, ‘Custom HTML’ to embed a film trailer and the ‘Text’ widget in order to write about it. Another reason I like this page is because of the content in which I put on my page as it including many different genre films that I had to write about. therefore it wasn’t exactly like my other pages where the whole page will be about one topic. When laying out this page I placed the trailer on the left-hand side column and placed text on either side with the screen grabs either before or after the text that links to each image. The page I think that’s the least successful on my Weebly site is my Interests page because it lacked information and I didn't get to put all of my interests on this page - especially as I wanted my website to be personal as well so that my viewers get a small insight of what type of person I am. Therefore if I had more time I would improve this page by posting information about my interests in music and fashion as well as dance. Lastly, I recently received feedback on my website. One of the pieces of feedback that stood out to me was that is that originally all of my unit’s for media was not under my ‘Media’ heading but was spread out in separate headings. Therefore, I decided to place all of my units named underneath one section. This made my website look even neater and as if there is too much on one website to read because this could make my viewers not want to read what is on my page. I feel that my website does what I originally wanted it do but I as the years have progressed my quality of writing has improved and my knowledge of using the site has as well which means that I am able to do a variety of things on my website e.g. embedded different documents that could attract to a wider audience that could give me more feedback on my website which can help me later on.

Here is the code - the part that says ‘background: #e9e9e9’ - is what sets the above colour for the drop downs as a grey-blue The picture below shows a different HTML colour code ‘background: #CC0066’ this has changed the colour on the drop downs to a bright pink (see below)
