NICA Background High School Mountain Biking League Growth NorCal League established 2001 The NorCal High School Mountain Bike Racing League (NorCal League) was established in 2001, by NICA Executive Director Matt Fritzinger to provide high quality racing opportunities for young riders. The NorCal League has steadily grown each year and now boasts more than 500 riders and more than 40 teams. As word spread the success of the NorCal League created tremendous interest and demand from southern California riders, parents and schools to start a league of their own. SoCal League established 2008 In 2008, with a generous grant from the Easton Foundation, the Southern California Interscholastic Cycling League (SoCal League) was established. With organizational and technical assistance from the NorCal League the SoCal League had an exceptional start ending its first season with 14 teams and 100 riders, more than doubling pace of growth of the NorCal League. With the explosive growth of the SoCal League and increasing national media coverage, requests for league expansion information have come from almost every area in the country.
