What Parents Can Do: Be involved! It’s Not Too Late to Beef Up Your Engagement with School! *Please check your child’s school calendar for specific dates for events. This school year has been another challenging year for you and your child. Trying to work together with you to get your child back into the “normal” school routine of in person learning has been a top priority. Attend Parent & Family Engagement Events Title I News for Parents Pay attention to school information sent home *Parent Resource Center* Join the your school’s Parent Advisory Council Check out the WBA Title I Parent Monthly Newsletters on the district website Keystone Exams May 16-27th Your involvement doesn’t have to be complicated or time consuming. Even though the end of the school year is right around the corner, it isn’t too late to get involved. Starting right now, you can: PSSA Testing Window until Visit your school’s Title I Parent Resource Center Call your child’s school and ask to speak with the Parent & Family Liaison. The Liaison will be able to share ideas and materials with you to help improved students achievement in math and reading. Website of the Month parents.nea.org—this website is provided for parents by the NEA (National Education Association) to help ensure children receive the best possible education in our public schools. We are now in our 8th month of school! As the year winds down, we would like to encourage you to help your student review class materials daily and continue throughout the summer. There are several tools that you can use to make studying fun and easy for your student such as: Websites Apps Flash cards Books (fictional & non-fictional) on the subjects your student is learning. Manipulatives As always, please fee free to contact your school’s Title I Parent Liaison if you need more support or information on how to improve your child’s academic performance in school! WILKES-BARRE AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT Title I Annual Parent Meeting April 22, 2022 On Friday, April 22, 2022 Title I Parent Liaisons invited their parents to join them for the Annual Title I Informational Meeting via Google Meet. Sandy Atherton, District Parent Liaison discussed the Federal Programs PowerPoint, Parent Advisory Council Membership, upcoming revision of Federal Documents, importance of parent surveys for feedback, and had a question/answer session. Wilkes-Barre Area Title I Reading Specialists Meet and Collaborate Wilkes-Barre Area and WVW Title I reading specialists recently participated in a professional learning opportunity at the LIU 18. Loriann Hoffman, LIU representative, facilitated the networking session where the participants shared information about their Title I programs and discussed educational resources and best practices to enhance instruction for Title I students. Future meetings are being planned to invite additional Title specialists to discuss and share information about their programs. GAR Memorial Middle School Hosts Title I Parent & Family Math & Reading Workshop! On Thursday, April 7th, 2022, GAR Memorial Middle School welcomed students and parents to an evening Title I Parent & Family Engagement event. Teachers reviewed with parents how to best support their children in acquiring the basic skills needed to succeed and improve academic achievement. Topics included review of the Skyward family access portal, in which students' grades, attendance, and assignment information are listed; Google classroom, in which students and teachers engage in online and virtual instructional activities; the GAR school website was also displayed and teachers guided attendees through accessing important announcements, posted information, and upcoming events. Families welcomed information about the upcoming PSSAs and 'Exact Path,' a newly adopted academic remediation tool to address the learning loss associated with the pandemic. Dodson Elementary at Mackin School Hosts Easter Parent & Family Engagement Event! Kindergarten students at Dodson Elementary at Mackin School recently participated in an Educational Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 9th, 2022. Kindergarten teachers added letters and sight words to eggs for students to locate and find. Students were able to practice phonics and phonemic awareness skills while having fun at the same time. Students also engaged in some fun and interactive Easter activities. Pictured are students from Mrs. Kelly's class, Ms. O"Meara class, Mrs. Sedon's class, and Mrs. Levandowski's class. Mr. Caprari Title I Literacy Coach/Parent Liaison along with the Kindergarten Teachers at Dodson Elementary organized the event. Check out our website for more resources! Kistler Elementary School Holds PSSA Pasta Night! Kistler Elementary School held a “PSSA Pasta Night” on April 7th from 6:00-7:30 PM in the school cafeteria. 130 students and their families enjoyed a pasta dinner and played educational math & reading games to prepare themselves for the PSSA test. Ms. Shanahan, Title I Parent Liaison shared the Federal Programs PowerPoint to families and presented a PowerPoint to parents to help them prepare their child for the PSSA tests. Students visited 6 teacher run stations which featured math & reading games. After each station was complete the students could put their name in a drawing to win a prize!
