MATTHEW CATHOLIC CHURCH Faith, Love, Community, Service Twenty first Sunday in Ordinary Time August 22, 2021 Living in the Eucharist As we conclude our five weeks series of Homilies in the Eucharist, here are some concluding thoughts to take with us. Christ lavishes treasures upon us in the Eucharist. What should our response be? First and foremost, faith: the Eucharist is indeed “the Mystery of Faith”. We need to say with St. Peter in today’s gospel, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.” This faith needs to be nurtured so that it can grow strong. This is why Christ gives us his Body and Blood, not just once in our lifetime, or once a year, but every Sunday – indeed, every day. Frequent reception of Holy Communion can strengthen our faith and deepen our union with Christ. But it is not automatic! Absence from the Sunday Eucharist weakens faith, as does routine reception. We must invest ourselves in our relationship with God: he calls us friends, not acquaintances. Here are some suggestions to help us deepen our experience of the Mass and Holy Communion: Regular celebration of the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation: Christ gave us both sacraments, and he wants to encounter us in both of them. We should go to confession if we are aware of serious sin, but even apart from this it is a good spiritual practice to receive the Lord’s forgiveness and the grace to avoid sin. Daily prayer, nourished by God’s word and, when possible, prayer in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. Take some time each week to meditate on the readings and prayers for the following Sunday. Faith-sharing, Bible study, prayer groups are all helpful, as is time devoted to works of mercy, such as St. Vincent de Paul Society and charitable work in your community.

Get this weekly bulletin delivered by email - for FREE! Featured News & Events THANK YOU FOR CONTINUED SUPPORT OF OUR LOCAL ST VINCENT de PAUL FOOD PANTRY Next Sunday, August 29th, is the fifth Sunday of the month. In keeping with tradition, St Matthew’s Parish holds a collection that supports the St. Matthew Conference (SVdP) food pantry that operates from our campus. This food pantry is the leader in home deliveries of shelf stable foods, frozen breads and meats, and Safeway gift cards to San Mateo households in need. Our pantry has seen a 60% increase in food insecurity each month of the pandemic. Monthly assistance has grown from 85 families pre-pandemic to an average of 136 families per month. In 2021, we have helped over 900 families -that’s 3,325 individuals! That is an amazing feat for this small pantry. None of this could be done without your help! Currently, we are experiencing a shortage of funds which has resulted in a 20% decrease in the amount of Safeway gift cards that we give at each home visit. We are also experiencing a shortage of the following foods: Pasta, Rice, Cereal, Peanut Butter Next weekend, August 28 & 29, please help us continue this vital ministry by donating needed food items and/or contributing to the collection for SVdP. Blue shopping carts will be placed around the church for you to place your donated food items. We also thank you for monetary donations collected at mass or contributed online. Thank you for helping St Vincent de Paul fight hunger in our own backyard.
