CALL TO WORSHIPPRELUDEThe CarillonGo, Tell It on the MountainEugene HancockWELCOMECONFESSION AND FORGIVENESSGod of all mercy and consolation, come to the aid of your people, turning usfrom our sin to live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit thatwe may confess our sin, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the fullnessof Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.Silence is kept for reflection and self-examination.Most Merciful God,We confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We havesinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have doneand by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our wholeheart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of yourSon, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, sothat we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory ofyour holy name. Amen.In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for hissake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained ministry of thechurch of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entireforgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, andof the Holy Spirit. Amen.LIGHTING OF THE CHRISTMAS CANDLESThe four candles on the outer ring of the Advent Wreath representing Hope,Peace, Joy, and Love and the white Christ candle in the center in commemorationof the birth of Christ are lit for the final time as we conclude the seasons ofAdvent and Christmas.2

CAROL #283 O Come All Ye Faithful (sung by cantors)CHRISTMAS GREETINGAs we usher in this new year, let us continue to rejoice that the Christ-child isborn anew in our hearts each day. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the loveof God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.And also with you.PRAYER OF THE DAYLet us pray. Almighty God, you have filled all the earth with the light ofyour incarnate Word. By your grace empower us to reflect your light in allthat we do, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives andreigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. FIRST READING Jeremiah 31:7-147Thus says the Lord: Sing aloud with gladness for Jacob, and raise shouts forthe chief of the nations; proclaim, give praise, and say, “Save, O Lord, yourpeople, the remnant of Israel.” 8See, I am going to bring them from the land ofthe north, and gather them from the farthest parts of the earth, among them theblind and the lame, those with child and those in labor, together; a greatcompany, they shall return here. 9With weeping they shall come, and withconsolations I will lead them back, I will let them walk by brooks of water, in astraight path in which they shall not stumble; for I have become a father toIsrael, and Ephraim is my firstborn. 10Hear the word of the Lord, O nations, and declare it in the coastlands far away; say, “He who scattered Israel willgather him, and will keep him as a shepherd a flock.” 11For the Lord hasransomed Jacob, and has redeemed him from hands too strong for him. 12Theyshall come and sing aloud on the height of Zion, and they shall be radiant overthe goodness of the Lord, over the grain, the wine, and the oil, and over theyoung of the flock and the herd; their life shall become like a watered garden, and they shall never languish again. 13Then shall the young women rejoice inthe dance, and the young men and the old shall be merry. I will turn theirmourning into joy, I will comfort them, and give them gladness for sorrow.14I will give the priests their fill of fatness, and my people shall be satisfiedwith my bounty, says the Lord. The word of Life. Thanks be to God.CAROL #300 The First Noel (stanzas 3-5)To follow along as the cantors sing the carols can be found on the back pagesof the bulletin.SECOND READING Ephesians 1:3-143Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us inChrist with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4just as he chose usin Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless beforehim in love. 5He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will, 6to the praise of his glorious gracethat he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. 7In him we have redemption4

through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches ofhis grace 8that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and insight 9he has madeknown to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he setforth in Christ, 10as a plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things inhim, things in heaven and things on earth. 11In Christ we have also obtained aninheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him whoaccomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, 12so that we, whowere the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory.13In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of yoursalvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promisedHoly Spirit; 14this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God’sown people, to the praise of his glory. The word of Life. Thanks be to God.CAROL #294 In the Bleak MidwinterTo follow along as the cantors sing the carols can be found on the back pagesof the bulletin.GOSPEL John 1:10-18The Gospel according to John, the 1st chapter. Glory to you, O Lord.10He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet theworld did not know him. 11He came to what was his own, and his own peopledid not accept him. 12But to all who received him, who believed in his name, hegave power to become children of God, 13who were born, not of blood or of thewill of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. 14And the Word becameflesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’sonly son, full of grace and truth. 15(John testified to him and cried out, “Thiswas he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks ahead of me because hewas before me.’ ”) 16From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.17The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came throughJesus Christ. 18No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is closeto the Father’s heart, who has made him known. The Gospel of the Lord.Praise to you, O Christ.5

We give thanks to you for the salvation you have prepared forus through Jesus Christ. Send now your Holy Spirit into our hearts, that we mayreceive our Lord with a living faith as he comes to us in his holy supper. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gavethanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat this is mybody, given for you.
