Riverside District’s Stuart Purkey Cub Hiking Club 2021 – 2022 Program Guide
The mission of the Riverside District’s Cub Hiking Club is to provide more opportunities for EVERY Cub Scout to engage in the outdoors. What you need to know about the program: 1. The Cub Hiking Club meets on the second Saturday of each month. Upon completion of the hike, that Cub Scout will be eligible for a monthly segment patch. All patches are available to order from either the Cub Hiking Club Chair or Council website. 2. If a Cub Scout misses a hike, he/she can do a “make-up” hike, on their own, under the supervision of their parent or designated guardian. Upon completion, that Cub Scout will be eligible for that month’s segment patch. 3. The Riverside District Cub Hiking Club is designed as an opportunity for parents or designated guardians to do an outdoor activity with their Cub Scout. Non-Cub Scout siblings are welcome to attend but are not eligible for patches. The intent is to supplement Pack activities. 4. Other people that can participate in this program include Cub Scout leaders, Den Chiefs, and Scouts BSA youth that work with Cub Scouts. 5. The flexibility of this program makes it possible to have more Cub Scouts eligible for all 12 months of segment patches. 6. It is the responsibility of parents or designated guardians to accompany and supervise their Cub Scout and any non-Cub Scout siblings for the duration of the hike. Each hike will have a guide in the front and in the back of the group. All participants are required to wear closed toe shoes. 7. Parents and designated guardians of Cub Scouts with special needs (language, culture, religion, disease, illness, emotional ability, mental ability, physical size, physical ability, economic factors, food allergies, medical needs, parental involvement), will have a few options for their youth’s participation in the program. The first option is to participate in the monthly hike. Cub Hiking Club Chair is available to discuss options and potential accommodations for scheduled hikes. The second option is to arrange a separate and customizable hike to the ability and strengths of the Cub Scout. Contact the Cub Hiking Club Chair to plan. The third option is for the parent or designated guardian to design an individual outdoor experience appropriate to their Cub Scout’s ability and strengths, comparable to the “make-up hike”. 8. Can someone from outside Riverside District participate? Yes. If requested, patches can be mailed for an additional fee.
