EXPLANATION OF THE NATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS FRAMEWORK The National Qualifications Framework (NQF) is “a single integrated system for the classification, registration, publication and articulation of quality-assured national qualifications” as stipulated in Section 4 of the NQF Act, 2008 (Act No 67 of 2008). The National Qualifications Framework (NQF) has ten levels of which Higher Education qualifications occupy 6 levels of the NQF, namely levels 5 to 10. Levels 5 to 7 comprise the undergraduate qualifications (with the exception of the Professional Bachelor’s degree at Level 8) and levels 8 to 10 comprise the postgraduate qualifications. RULES FOR UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMES BACHELOR OF ARTS (2101) C.1 ADMISSION Unless Senate decides otherwise, a student shall be required to meet the following criteria to be enrolled for the Bachelor of Arts degree - (BA): C.1.1 Minimum admission requirements for applicants who matriculated from 2008 (a) The National Senior Certificate for Bachelor’s Degree study with a score of no fewer than 35 points calculated according to the University’s approved point system, as well as the following specific programme requirements: (b) Level 4 (50-59%) in English (Home or First Additional Language), and Level 4 (50-59%) in another subject No specific level is required for Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy except in the subject areas listed below. Subject specific requirements: An applicant who wishes to be admitted to modules in the following subject areas: Geography, Tourism, Information Science and Psychology. Level 3 (40-49%) in Mathematics OR Level 4 (50-59 %) in Mathematical Literacy C.1.2 Minimum admission requirements for applicants who matriculated before 2008 (a) A Matriculation Exemption with a minimum aggregate of a D symbol. OR (b) A qualification or level of competence which the Senate of the University has deemed to be equivalent to the requirements stipulated in (a) above. C.1.3 Alternative admission Alternative admission does not apply to this programme. Refer to Rule C.11 C.2 SELECTION Final selection shall be based on an applicant meeting the criteria as determined by the Faculty. C.3 DURATION Unless Senate decides otherwise the duration for the degree shall extend over three years fulltime. 13
C.4 C.4.1 SUBJECT AREAS The following subjects offered in the Faculty of Arts may be taken as majors for the BA degree: C.4.2 Afrikaans en Nederlands Afrikaans Taalpraktyk Anthropology Arabic Classical Culture English Ethics French Geography, Environmental Studies and Tourism German History Language and Communication Studies Latin Philosophy Sociology Theological Studies Women’s and Gender Studies Xhosa Studies Xhosa Language Acquisition The following subjects offered in other Faculties may be taken as majors for the BA degree. Please refer to the applicable Faculty calendars for module details: Industrial Psychology (Economic and Management Sciences calendar) Environmental and Sustainability Studies (Natural Sciences calendar) Political Studies (Economic and Management Sciences calendar) Psychology (Community and Health Sciences calendar) Please Note: Psychology and Industrial Psychology are prohibited combinations and therefore cannot be taken simultaneously. C.4.3 The following modules are only offered at level 1 and do not lead to a major: C.4.4 English 105/106 Afrikaans Language Acquisition 101 Hermeneutics 121/122 Humanities 111/121 Library and Information Science 111/121 Information Systems 131/132 A student who has passed Afrikaans Home Language or Afrikaans First Additional Language in Grade 12, may not register for Afrikaans Language Acquisition. 14
C.4.5 Advanced standing: Foreign Languages A student with prior learning in any of the languages offered in the Department of Foreign Languages (Arabic, French, German, and Latin) may apply for advanced standing. Advanced standing will be granted if a student has: passed the relevant language in Grade 12 with a score of at least 4 or has a certificate from a recognized educational service provider that is deemed the equivalent of such a pass in Grade 12; or to the satisfaction of the Department, demonstrated the required competence in the relevant language in a competency test set by the Department. Advanced standing will be granted solely at the discretion of the Department. A student shall not be able to appeal the Department’s decision. If advanced standing is granted, a student will be exempted from level 1 modules in the relevant language and will be allowed to do level 2 modules in that language after promotion to level 2. A student may register for replacement modules at level 1 from any of the modules offered in the Faculty of Arts. C.4.6 Transition rule from English 105/106 to mainstream English 111/121 A student who wishes to take either English 111 or English 121 must achieve an average of 70% for English 105 or English 106 to qualify automatically. A student with a coursework mark lower than 70% shall be expected to complete an assessment to gauge the skills s/he will require to be successful in English 111/121 after which s/he will be allowed to transfer at the discretion of the English Department. C.5 CURRICULUM The curriculum is based on combinations of modules. Modules are offered in specific subject areas and at three different year levels. This implies that a student has to select appropriate modules from subjects s/he wishes to study. A student’s curriculum must include at least two major subjects. A major subject normally includes 30 credits at level 1, 40 credits at level 2 and 40 credits at level 3. Please Note: Part-time students should consult the Faculty for module availability and selection as only a limited number of modules are available on part-time basis. C.5.1 C.5.1.1 Level 1 At level 1, a student shall select modules in the following way: 60 credits in preparation for the two major subjects s/he plans to take and 60 additional credits, of which at least 30 credits are in another subject that can be taken further as a major.
