CHRISTIAN FUNERALSThe loss of a loved one is never an easy time in the life offamily and friends. Sometimes the loss is expected andanticipated, giving families time to say their “goodbyes”and to at least mentally plan for the final arrangements.Other times, it is totally unexpected and grief-strickenfamilies must make these decisions under time pressures.You do not have to be a member of Sunnybrook CommunityChurch to have the funeral service conducted bySunnybrook staff—either on site, at the funeral home or atthe gravesite.It is the goal and hope of Sunnybrook staff and volunteersthat they can be there to minister to you in your hour ofdeep need.The bottom line is that God loves you; He sees your hurtand pain. The Sunnybrook funeral ministry team wants toserve as the hands and feet of Jesus Christ as they help youwalk through this valley of sadness and grief. ROLE OF THE FUNERAL COORDINATORSunnybrook employs a Funeral Coordinator to assist inplanning and coordinating the details of the funeral ormemorial service of your loved one.Sylvia Kiel is the Funeral Coordinator and can be reached at712-276-0884 or sylviak@sunnybrookchurch.org. Sylvia willbe the one who will be in contact with you following yourinitial contact with the church office or BJ Van Kalsbeek.Her duties include, but are not limited to: Serve as the liaison between the family and the Sunnybrook staffFacilitate completion of Funeral Information FormSecure officiating Pastor for the serviceReserve building space as neededSecure technical/worship personnel if neededCoordinate building availability/use with custodianServe as the contact person for Funeral Director of thechosen Funeral HomeSecure volunteers as neededCoordinate music/musicians (live or recorded) and workwith officiant to approve musical selectionsCommunicate timing expectations to the familyWork with the family to coordinate reception/luncheon ifit is held at Sunnybrook.Will be present for visitation and/or services hosted atSunnybrook.
ROLE OF THE OFFICIANTFuneral/Memorial services are conducted by one of Sunnybrookofficiants. The officiant will meet with the family prior to thefuneral/memorial service to offer comfort and to help the familyin planning for the funeral service(s) of their loved one. POST FUNERAL SUPPORTGrief Share is a 13 week support group that meets atSunnybrook and is designed to support its participants asthey progress through the grief journey. This group isavailable to anyone that is experiencing grief and open ifyou desire to join. The Funeral Coordinator can assist youwith more information about how to connect with thisministry. You can also learn more about this ministry atwww.griefshare.org.Grief Counseling services are available to families in thegrieving process. If you are interested in grief counselingplease contact Sunnybrook for a list ofrecommendations.
